8 Claims.
The present invention relates to resoling stitching machines of the type in which the shoe to be operated on is held on a work support by a presser foot and operated on by an awl and a stitching mechanism and fed forward as the work progresses. An object of this invention is to provide a cutter and means associated therewith which will operate on the sole in advance of the stitching mechanism to cut and turn back a lip to permit the stitching mechanism to operate through that portion of the sole below the lip and the welt, novel means being provided for mounting the cutting knife. Another object of this invention is to mount the cutting knife on the support or carrier for the awl to perform the cutting operation as the awl advances over the work. Still another object of the invention is to provide the presser foot with a guideway for a lip forming cutter movable relatively thereto.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a stitching machine illustrating one application of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in other positions;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the same;
Fig. i is a similar view, showing the parts in another position;
Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed views or" the knife and parts associated therewith detached from the machine;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged side elevation;
Fig. 8 is a similar view showing the parts in another position;
Fig. 9 is a section on the line BB, Fig. 4; and
Fig. 10 is a section through the knife and presser foot.
In resoling shoes with a sewing or stitching machine it is customary to cut a groove in the surface of the outer sole in which the stitches of the machine are formed to secure the outer sole to the welt of the shoe, this groove being formed adjacent the edges of the sole produces an unsightly appearance in the finished work. According to the present invention the cutting knife is arranged to make an inclined incision adjacent the edge of the sole to form a lip, means being provided for raising this lip during the stitching operation. After the stitching operation, the lip is returned to normal position and completely conceals the stitching.
Any suitable stitching machine may be used. A common and well known form comp-rises a work support 1 with which the welt of the shoe engaged after the outer sole is temporarily positioned on the shoe. The shoe held on the support and clamped thereonby a presser foot detachably mounted on an oscillatory arm 3. While clamped on the work support by the presser foot a curved swinging awl 4 passes through the welt and the sole, the awl being mounted on a support 15 for reciprocatory movement transversely of its plane of operation, so that the awl serves to feed the work over the work support which is provided wi .1 a slot to permit the transverse movement of the awl. The awl makes a transverse movement in the direction to feed the work while extending through the sole and the welt, and an idle return movement after it has been withdrawn from the work to make a succession of perforations through which the stitching is passed. A curved needle 5 passes through the openings in the sole and welt made by the awl and cooperates with a looper, not shown but common in the art, to form the stitch. Detailed description of these parts is deemed unnecessary as they are old and well-known in the art.
In the present instance, the usual presser foot is removed replaced with a combined presser foot and work gauge 6 having a part extending laterally to a point in rear of the stitching needle where it is provided with an outwardly upwardly inclined deflector 7. Mounted by means of the arm 8 on the part 15 which also carries the awl, is a cutting knife 9 having a reciprocatory movement with the awl, but which is mounted to operate on the work in advance of the awl. The combined presser foot and gauge 6 is formed of two parts secured to each other by any suitable means, as by screws as shown, and a slot or guideway for the cutting knife is provided in which the knife is mounted and moves. The knife or cutter projects forwardly from the slot and is inclined slightly downwardly but has its cutting edge substantially in the plane of the sole.
It will be noted that the work operated on is held between the Work support 1 and the presser foot 6 and against a gauge 6 combined with the presser foot and adapted to limit the movement of the work toward the knife and guide it on its support as the work progresses. The knife forms a slit in the outer sole adjacent its edge in advance of the action of the awl and stitching devices and the deflector '7 engages the lip formed by the cutter in rear of said devices and raises it to a substantially vertical position during the stitching operation. It will also be noted that the awl moves the work to advance it from stitch to stitch and that the knife moves with it and the work, the cutting being performed on the return stroke when the awl is free from the work, thus avoiding undue strains on the awl causing it to bend or break as might be the case the awl moved the work the knife to perform the cutting operation. The invention disclosed herein is in the nature of an attac -ent for a resoling stitching machine. The u; l presser foot is detached and replaced by the combined presser foot and work gauge. The presser foot and work gauge extend across the stitching devices where it is pro dried with the deflector and a guideway for the lip cutter which is arrange between the deflector and the presser foot, the lip cutter being adapted to be mounted on the awl support 15 and arranged in the guideway to move transversely with the awl. The awl support is mounted in a guideway 16 and is reciprocated by the bell crank 17 one of which is engaged by the cam 18. The presser foot arm or support 19 has a handle 20 by means of which it may b lifted from the work about the pivot 21.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Eatent is:
