To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR BA'rEs and GERALD Pneo, subjects of the King of Eng. land, residing at Leicester, Leicestershire, England, have. invented certain Improve ments in Machines for Making Clog-Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,'is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This inventionhas reference to machines for use in the manufacture of shoes and is more particularly designedfor employment in the manufacture of shoes ofa type generally called clogs which comprise wooden soles and flexible uppers. V i
The invention will be described, by way of iexample,.with reference to a particular operation in the manufacture of so-called Lancashire clogs, c. a, clogs in which the margin of the upper which lies in a groove formed in t-l16' side of the sole is concealed by a rand strip or welt running around the side of the sole and secured to the sole by fastenings which are driven through the rand strip and the margin of the upper into the soleralongthe line of the groove. It is recognized, however, that the invention as a whole or certain features. thereof may be used in otherways or in other relations such,
I for example,,as in the attachment of uppers to soles in the manufacture of (log shoes without the application of a rand strip. It is therefore intended that the scope of the invention shallibe limited only by the lan gi'iage of the appended claims.

The invention in one of its aspects resides in the provision of means for guiding a rand strip for application of the strip over the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole and guiding means constructed and arranged to engage in the groove of the outsole to position the outsole relatively to the rand guiding means so that the rand strip will be properly located in the groove of the outsole. In another aspect, the invention comprises the association with rand guiding means for guiding the rand to position for attachment in the groove of an outsole of means for laying the margin of the upper in proper position in the groove prior to the attachment of the rand and upper to the outsole. The invention is herein illustrated as applied to a fastening inserting machine of 'the type described in the patent to Louis Goddu, No. 490,624, dated January 24. 1893, and reference may be made to the said Letters Patent for a more complete disclosure of parts not fully described herein. The machine comprises a frame 1 (see Fig. 2) on which is mounted a swinging head which carries a driver guiding and awl guiding member 2 formed with passages to receive the awl 4 and the driver (not shown). The fastenings are supplied to the fastening inserting mechanism by the raceway 6 which serves to guide the fastenings into the driver passage in the memben 2. The member 2. is cut away at its lower side adjacent to the driver passage to receive fingers 8 which are normally pressed inwardly from opposite sides of the driver passage by a spring 10. The fingers 8 serve to hold the fastenings in upright position in the driver passage and to prevent lateral deflection of the fastenings as they are driven. The parts thus far described constitute in themselves no part of the present invention for which reason a further description of such elements is deemed unnecessary.
Work guiding means is provided of a form to engage in the groove of an ontsole to which the margin of an upper is to be attached by the fastening inserting i'nechanism. Said means comprises a blade 12 elongated in the direction of the feed of the work and carried by an arm 14 slidably mounted on. a rod 16 secured in the frame 1 of the machine, the arm 14 being adjustably secured to the frame 1 by a screw 18 the shank of which passes through a slot 20 in the member 14. The slot 20 is elongated trans *ersely of the arm 14 so as to permit ad ustment of the member 14 in a direction 7 25 formed in the outsole' 28 and serves thereby to position the outsole 28 relatively to the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism as said outsoleis fed relatively to the fastening inserting mechanism in. the operation of attaching the margin of the upper 30 in the groove 26 0f the outsole. By reference to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the blade 12 is adapted to lie between the shoulder 24 of the groove 26 and the marginal edge 32 of the upper 30 and that the surface 34 of the blade 12 by its engagement with the edge of the upper thrusts back any portion of the upper which may extend past the shoulder of the groove and lays the margin of the upper in proper position in the groove. Moreover, the blade 12 and the adjacent portion of the lower surface 36 of the member 38 which carries the blade 12 serve to press the margin of the upper 30 into the groove 26 and to maintain the margin of the upper in the groove.
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, the member 38 which carries the work guiding blade 12 seen to comprise the portions 39 and 41 arranged substantially at right angles to each. other, the portion 39 underlying the forward extension 40 of the arm 12 and having the blade 12 depending therefrom. The upstanding portion 41 of the member 38 is slotted at 46 and the member 38 is secured to the arm 14 for adjustment relatively thereto transversely of the plane of operation of .the fastening inserting mechanism by a bolt or the like 44 passing through the slot 46 into said arm. In the illustrated construction, the portion 39 of the member 38 and: the forward extension 40 of the arm 14 together constitute a work abutment for determining the vertical position of the work and steadying it for operation by the fastening inserting mechanism. The work guiding face 22 of the blade 12 which, as already stated, is positioned forwardly of the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism, is located adjacent to the forward end of the Work abutment 39, 40. The work abutment may, however, be formed separately from the work guiding means in which case the work guiding surface will still preferably be positioned adjacent to the vertical plane of the forward end'of said abutment so that the line of the groove in the sole at the point of operation will be visible to the operator. i
The invention contemplates the provision of means for guiding a rand-strip in the attachment of the strip over the margin of the upper where it lies in the groove of the outsole. Preferably, and as shown, the said means is constituted by the forward extension 40 of the arm 14 which is channeled at 42 to receive the strip. It follows,
therefore, that the blade 12 which underlies the channeled e gtension 40 operates to position the outsole relatively to the rand guiding means. 'The rand guiding channel 42 of the rand guide 40 is located beneath that part of the member 2 in which the awl 4 reciprocates, the floor of the channel 42 being slotted at 43 to permit the awl 4 to pass through the guide into the work and to perform its lateral or work feeding stroke. Thework guiding blade 12 'is positioned subjacent to the channel 42 of the rand guide, the portion 39 of the member 38 which carries the blade .12 being further provided with a slot alining with the slot 43 of the rand guide. The blade 12 is located in the vertical plane transverse to the direction of feed of the work and passing through the point of engagement of the awl 4 with the work. Obviously, since, in the illustrated construction, the rand guide is formed as a part of the arm 14, the bolt and slot connection 44, 46 constitutes means for adjusting the blade 12 relatively to the rand guide. The operation of the invention will be described, by way of example, by reference to'the making of Lancashire clogs.
In the practice of the invention the upper is preferably preliminarily attached to the sole edge and its margin istrimmed. When the clog is presented to the machine, the blade 12 enters between the marginal edge 32 of the margin of the upper 30 (see Fig. 4) and'the shoulder 24 of the groove 26 of the sole 28 which shoulder, asthe clog sole is being held moreor less vertically, is more or less vertical. Although with the shallow groove 26, almost entirely filled by the thickness of upper, which is usual in clogs of this type, there is no definite crease or groove, the operator may,"byv the agency of this blade, guide the work truly accordingtothe contour of the shoulderand insure the neat disposition of the. rand 48 along the margin of the upper as it is being attached to the clog by the nails 'driven by the machine. The blade 12 may, however, if the strip is to overlap the junction of the upper and sole, be adjustably positioned so that its plane passes through the strip channel 42, the blade being always preferably positioned forwardly ofthe median line of th channel.
To facilitate the handling of the work with its sole toward the operator the machine head may be carried somewhat more forwardly of its column than usual and to bring the work closer to the operators eye, the head is also preferably somewhat raised. Since, however, the present invention is not conceived with such parts of the fastening inserting machine, it has not been deemed necessary to describe or illustrate them herein,
As shown in Fig. 1, themachine is provided with a supplementary rand guide 54 supported on a part 56 secured to the machine frame fer delivering the rand strip 48 to the guide 40. This guide 54, arranged as shown, performs also the function of a guide foot or rest of the type of the abutment of the machine described in the specification of application Serial No. 174,7 42, filed June 14, 1917, by Arthur Bates.
Although the guides 40 and 54 are described above as mounted on' the machine frame and consequently as stationary, the guide through which the awl penetrates may, if desired, be mounted on the swinging head of the machine as indicated at 40 in F 6 of the drawing, in which case the work guiding blade will preferably be mounted on the stationary guide'as indicated at 12 in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing. The guide 40 is preferably formed as shown in Fig. 6 and may be secured to the driver guide and awl guiding member 2 by the screw 58 or other suitable means. The guide 40 is formed with a slot60 through which the awl operates;

combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for feeding the work past the fastening inserting mechanism, and work guiding means positioned substantially in the vertical plane of the point of engagement of the feeding means with the work transverse to the direction of feed of the work and adapted to be received in the groove of the outsole for guiding the outsolc as it is held against said work guiding means and fed relatively to said fastening inserting mechanism in the attachment of the upper thereto.
2. In a machine of the class described. in combination, a frame, fastening inserting mechanism carried by said frame for securing the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole and work guiding means mounted on said frame independently of the fastening inserting mechanism and formed to present a substantially plane surface for engagement with the shoulder of the groove formed in the outsole.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of work guiding means constructed and arranged for engagement bet-ween the edge of the upper and the shoulder of the groove to position the margin of the upper properly in said groove.
4. In a machine of the class described,
the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of work guiding means having a surface adapted to engage the margin of the upper to press it into the groove of the outsole and a seconr surface disposed below the first-mentioned surface and at an angle thereto and forwardly of the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism and faced away from said plane.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism of a work abutment extending forwardly of the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism and work guiding means having a work guiding surface disposed below the abutment and adj acent to the vertical plane of the forward end of said abutment and constructed and arranged to guide the work by engagement therewith at a point in advance of the plane of operation of said. fastening inserting mechanism so that the part of the work by which the work is guided is visible to the operator. V
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism of a member formed to present a surface against which the work may be maintained to locate it in operative relation to the fastening inserting mechanism, and a blade extended downwardly from said member and constructed and arranged for engagement in a groove formed in the work.
In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of work guiding means comprising a blade constructed and arranged for engagement in the groove of the outsole between the shoulder of said groove and the marginal edge of the upper.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism of a member mounted adjacent to the fastening inserting mechanism and provided with a downwardly extending blade elongated in the direction of the feed of the work, and a work abutment adjacent to said member disposed in substantial alinement with said blade.
9. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a frame, fastening inserting mechanism-carried by said frame, a member mounted on said frame for adjustment in a direction substantially parallel to the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism and formed to present a surface against which the work may be maintained to locate it in operative re lation to the fastening inserting mechanism, and a blade extending downwardly from said member and elongated in the direction of feed of the work.
10. In a machine of the class described, a frame, fastening inserting mechanism mounted for swinging movement relatively to said frame, and a member fixed to the frame and having a part lying adjacent to the plane of operation of said fastening inserting mechanism on the work, said part having a blade extending laterally therefrom and formed with a narrow edge ex tending in a direction substantially parallel to the plane of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the mar gin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for, guiding the rand and work guiding means constructed and arranged to engage in the groove of the outsole and operating to position the outsole relatively to the rand guiding means.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in thegroove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand and means for laying the margin of the'upper in proper position in thegroove prior to the attachment of the rand and upper to the outsole.
18. In a machine of the class described,
the combination With fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand and Work guiding means subjacent to said rand guiding means constructed to engage in the groove of the outsole.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand and Work guiding means constructed and arranged to guide the outsole upon movement of the outsole relatively to said fastening inserting mechanism in a path such that the rand Will be laid in the groove of the outsole.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for attaching a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole, of means for guiding the rand comprising a channeled portion, and Work guiding means having a Work guiding surface positioned forwardly of the median line of the channel of said rand guiding means.
16. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand having a channeled portion and Work guiding means having a guiding surface positioned to one side of the channeled portion of said rand guiding means and facedaway from the channeled portion of the rand guiding means.
17. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand having a channeled portion, Work guiding means having a guiding surface positioned in advance of the channeled portlon of said rand gulding means and facing away from the chan-V neled portion of the rand guiding means, and means for adjusting said work guiding means relatively to said rand guiding means.
18. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole of means for guiding the rand having a channeled portion andvvork guiding means mounted on said rand guiding means having a guiding surface positioned in advance of the channeled portion of said rand guiding means and facing away from the channeled portion of the rand guiding means.
19. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism, of rand guiding means provided With a slot for operation therein of said fastening inserting mechanism, supplementary rand guiding means arranged to guide the rand to said first-mentioned rand guiding means and constructed to constitute an abutment for the Work, and a Work guiding member carried by one of said rand guiding means. I

In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole, of a rand guide operable to lay the rand in the groove of the outsole, a supplementary rand guide for delivering the rand to the first-named guide, and a blade carried by one of said guides and constructed and arranged for engagement in the groove of the outsole to position the Work relatively to the rand guide. v
21. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism, of rand guiding means provided With a slot for operation therein of said fastening inserting mechanism and Work guiding means carried by said rand guiding means and having a Work guiding face arranged in advance of the plane of operation of said fastening inserting mechanism.
22. In a machine of the class described, the combination With fastening inserting mechanism of means for guiding a rand, and Work guiding means mounted adjacent to the rand guiding means, said rand guiding means and said Work guiding means being provided With alined slots for operation therein of said fastening inserting mechanism.
23. In a machine of the class described,
"the combination with fastening inserting mechanism for securing a rand and the margin of an upper in the groove of an outsole, of a rand guide provided With a slot, a work feeding member operable in said slot, and a Work guide associated With said rand guide having a blade constructed and arranged for engagement in the groove of the outsole to position the Work relatively to the rand guide.
