Applicationlulyll ig1950, summer-1733091 This inventionirelateato concrete :forms and accessories therefor, and moreparticularly to a A maineobject of the inventionisto provide a' novel and improved Whaler-supporting device which i very simple in construction, which is easy to apply to a vertical stud of a concrete form, and which provides a firm support for holding a horizontal Whaler stud in position for securement to the concrete form.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved, removable supporting device for supporting the horizontal Whaler studs applied to the wooden forms used for pouring concrete, said supporting device involving only a few parts, being inexpensive to manufacture, being movable into gripping position with respect to a vertical stud by very simple manual operations, and being readily removed when its use is no longer required.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a concrete form showing an improved Whalersupporting device constructed in accordance with the present invention applied to one of the vertical stud members of the concrete form;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of an improved whaler-supporting device according to the present invention, as employed in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the whalersupporting device of Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the Whaler-supporting device of Figures 1 to 3.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the supporting device comprises a pair of parallel, elongated side bars I I, I I, to the top edges of which are respectively secured the legs I2 of a first U-shaped rod member I3, and to the bottom edges of which are respectively secured the legs I4 of a second U-shaped rod member I5 vertically aligned with the U- shaped rod member I3. Rigidly secured to the mid-portion of the bight of the bottom U-shaped member I5 is an outwardly extending, arm or flat bar element I6 which is substantially coplanar with the U-shaped rod member I5, as shown in Figure 3. The bar member I6 is of substantial length and is adapted to underlie a horizontal stud member I1, shown in Figure 1, to support 1y secured at their: topeinner .corners ito; the .end

I Designatedat :I9, ,I9, are respectiva-alevers are; substantiallp,rectangular platemembers pivotal portions-oil. the legs. I12 or the upper; U PShaped rod. member. =Integrallycarried-bythe plate mem-.-,. bers I9, I9 and extending axially with respect to said plate members are the respective depending handle rods 20, 20. The inner side edge of each rectangular plate member I9 is provided at its in-. termediate portion with a piercing means or an inwardly extending spur element 2 I, as shown in Figure 2.
In using the device, the U-shaped top and bottom rod elements l3 and I5 are engaged around the vertical stud I8, as shown in Figure 1, at the proper elevation corresponding to that at which the horizontal Whaler stud I1 is to be disposed, and the plate members I9, I9 are rotated inwardly toward the side surfaces of the vertical stud I8 by means of the handles 20, 20. This causes the spur elements 2|, 2I to become embedded in the vertical stud I8, thereby locking the device to the vertical stud. When the device has been secured to the vertical stud, as above described, the bar member I6 projects outwardly and defines the horizontal support on which the Whaler stud Il may be placed while it is being. mounted on'the form. In securing the device, the handles 20, 20 are held in spread-apart positions and are then rotated downwardly and inwardly to a vertical position, shown in Figure 1, causing the spurs 2|, 2| to become firmly embedded in the vertical stud l8. To detach the. device from the vertical stud I8 when its use is no longer required, it is merely necessary to move the handle members 20, 20 upwardly and away from the side surfaces of the vertical stud I8. thereby withdrawing the spur elements 2|, 2| from the vertical stud and freeing the device for removal from said vertical stud.
Although a specific embodiment of an improved supporting device for Whaler studs for use in concrete forms has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention'may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A whaler support adapted to embrace a vertical stud member of concrete form comprising a pair of bars arranged in parallel spaced relation, a first U-shaped member arranged transversely of said bars adjacent one of the ends of the latter and having a bight facing and spaced from said bars with the portion of its legs inwardly of the free ends thereof secured to said one ends of the bars, a second U-shaped member arranged in parallel spaced relation with respect to said first namedmember adjacent the other ends'of said bars and having the bight facing and spaced from said bars with the portion of its legs inwardly of the free ends thereof secured to said other ends of the bars, a lever arranged longitudinally of and spaced from each of said bars and having one end connected to the free end 4 of the free ends thereof secured to said one end of the bars, a second U-shaped member arranged in parallel spaced relation with respect to said first named member adjacent the other ends of said bars and having the bight facing and spaced from said bars with the portion of its legs inwardly of the free ends thereof secured to said other ends of the bars, a lever embodying a rectangular plate and a handle dependingfrom said plate arranged longitudinallyof and spaced from each of said bars and havingthe corner of said plate contiguous to and connected to the free end of the adjacent leg of said first named member for pivotal movement about said last named free end, an arm positioned exteriorly of and projecting longitudinally from the bight of said of the adjacent leg of said first named member for pivotal movement about said last named free end, an arm positioned exteriorly of and projecting longitudinally of said first named member, and opposed piercing means on said levers intermediate the ends of the latter.
2. A Whaler support adapted to embrace a verfirst named member, and opposed spur elements on said levers intermediate the ends of the latter.
