Description
E. A. CULLITON Y PLATE FULLER March 22, 1949.
2 ShetS-Sheet 1 Filed April 4, 1946 INVEN TOR.
Patented Mar. 22, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My present invention relates to an improved plate puller and more particularly to a plate puller adapted for use in removing plates from blast furnaces.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a puller or remover for the cooling plate for inspection, replacement, or repair.
Generally, my invention consists in two U- shaped frames co-acting with each other one comprising a brace and the other a plate engaging frame. A jack of suitable character is employed between the frames to move the work engaging frame with relation to the brace frame.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the plate puller of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the pulling frame; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the brace frame.
Referring now to the drawings I have illustrated a U-shaped pulling frame having a cross bar I, and legs or arms 2 and 3 extending at right angles therefrom. The arms 2 and 3 are vertically split at 4 to form yoke arms 5 and 6. A jack receiving collar I is secured to the inner wall of the cross bar I and the yoke arms 5 and 6 of the arms 2 and 3 are formed with aligned openings therethrough as 8 and 9.
The plate is illustrated at P in a furnace not shown, and the plate P is fashioned with outwardly extending lugs P formed with openings 0 therein.
Pins I0 engage the openings 8 and 9 of the yoke arms, and the openings 0 of the plate P.
I also employ a U-shaped brace or supporting pressure frame having a crossbar or web II and legs or horizontally disposed webs I2 and I3 extending at right angles from the cross bar, and the inner corners of the junction between the bar and legs are filled or strengthened as at I4 and I5.
An exterior collar I6 on the cross web II is fashioned to receive one end of the jack, and outwardly extending lugs I1 and I8 of the leg I2 of the brace frame provide handles by which the brace frame may be carried to facilitate ma.- neuverability.
In operation, the pressure frame is placed with its arms I2 and I3 respectively over the lugs of the plate to be removed and the pulling frame is affixed with its arms 2 and 3 on either side of the brace frame and the split yokes of the legs 2 and 3 receive the plate lugs P therebetween and pins I0 are inserted.
A suitable jack, either mechanical or hydraulic as desired is fitted between and engaging the collars I and I6 as shown in dotted lines, and the extension of the jack will force the pulling frame away from the brace frame and the plate will be pulled from the furnace to the limit of movement, i. e., the inner wall of the cross bar II of the brace frame.
It is believed clear that the plate may thus be removed from the blast furnace without the operator touching the plate and the removal will be accomplished with facility.
The puller of my invention is simple and durable, and provided with reinforced portions as desired and needed to provide long life.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An extractor, the combination which comprises an elongated frame, U-shaped in plan having horizontally disposed arms connected at the outer ends by a cross-bar and with the inner ends of the arms split vertically providing receiving openings for ears of a furnace plate and having transversely disposed pin holding openings therethrough spaced from the ends of the said split ends of the frame, the arms and cross-bar of said elongated frame being rectangular shaped in cross-section and said cross-bar having a jack receiving and positioning collar on the inner surface thereof, and a supporting pressure frame, U-shaped in elevation, having horizontally disposed webs connected by a vertically disposed outer web extended through said elongated frame and, in the operative position, positioned between the arms of the said elongated frame and with the ends of the horizontally disposed webs forming an abutment, said vertically disposed web having a jack receiving and positioning collar on the outer surface thereof aligned with the said collar on the inner surface of the cross-bar of the said elongated frame, and the upper horizontally disposed webs of the said pressure frame having laterally extended arms positioned over and extended beyond the said longitudinally disposed arms of the elongated frame.
