My present invention relates generally to improvements in removing and disposing noil, waste and the like in operations pertaining to textile fiber preparation, and particularly to an airfilter arranged, in combination with a suction device, in combing and like machines; and the main object of my improvements is to trap any waste from the suction air which is discharged into the working room, with a view of protecting the operators and attendants and the machines from such waste.
In combing machines, e. g., it is known to precipitate noil and waste produced in the combing operation onto the perforated jacket or shell of a rotating drum from which air is sucked off. As shown in practice, however not all the waste is collected on the drum jacket, in that short fibers and dust enter through the jacket sieve and are sucked off with the air stream into the fan. In order to prevent any such waste from escaping into the working room, it has been proposed to provide bag-like dust-collectors in the duct between rotating drum and suction fan. Such dust-collectors were put underneath the machine so as to render the latter readily accessible from all sides. Such disposition, however, is a hindrance to the cleaning operation, in particular as regards the withdrawing and replacing of the filters, so much that the periodic cleaning often requires to take the respective machine out of operation for some length of time. Such bag-filters, further, possess only a comparatively small active filter surface, and thus are readily clogged, even when frequently cleaned.
In order to eliminate the said disadvantages and inconveniences, I provide-in accordance with my present inventiona filter in the machine drive-head and disposedrelative to the air stream-downstream from the suction fan. The said filter suitably is formed as a box which encloses the said fan on all sides, and comprises one or more frames which are readily removable. The waste carried in the air stream thus is trapped in the filter or filters.
An example of my present invention is shown, partly schematical, in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a combing machine comprising a filter arrangement in the drive head, the latter being shown in section on line I-I of Fig. 2.

The drive head of the comber is denoted by l,
the rotating drum by 2, and the perforated portions of the latter, which face the combing heads, by 3. The inside of drum 2 communicates with the suction fan 5 by way of the pipe 4, and fan 5 is driven from the shaft 6 by means of the belt drive I, 8 and 9. Fan 5 on all sides is enclosed by a filter box comprising the floor l0, cover H. the side wall l2, and the slotted front and. rear walls [3 which are detachable. Two filter elements or frames l4, facing each other with their open fronts, are set up in the filter box lit-I3, i. e. into recesses provided on opposite sides of drive head I. The filter frames comprise two sides l4 covered by filter cloth or the like, a base board l4" and a handle l5, and may be introduced or withdrawn from filter box Ill-l3 after detaching the front and rear walls 13.
The rotating drum 2, as known, serves for col lecting the waste and fiy removed from the combs by the comb brushes. The air stream entering through the portions 3 in the direction of the arrows A, into the drum 2, takes any waste and fiy which is not held back on the susface of the perforated portions 3, along and passes same through drum 2 and duct 4 in direction of the arrows B into fan 5, from which it is discharged into filter box l0l3. In the latter, the air stream impinges on the filter frames l4, and the waste and fiy is trapped on the filter faces [4, while the air is discharged through the slotted panels l3, in direction of the arrow 0, into the working room. The filter-frames M posses comparatively large filter faces [4, and the power for driving fan 5, therefore, may be reduced. On the other hand, the filter elements l4 do not have to .be cleaned as often as the known bag-filters mentioned above. Further, the filter frames l4 may be exchanged without taking the combing machine out of operation, to which end the filter frame may be withdrawn by the handle l5.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In apparatus for removing waste in a combing or similar textile machine, said machine having a drive head provided with a chamber extending the whole width of the drive head, the combination of a suction device mounted in said chamber, a rotatable waste collecting drum, a suction pipe leading from said drum to the suction device within said chamber, and filter elements in said chamber on both sides of said suction device, the two opposed ends of said chamher being provided with removable slotted end walls Permitting removal of the filter elements from said chamber.
2. In apparatus for removing waste in a combing or similar textile machine, said machine having a drive head provided with a chamber of rectangular cross section extending the entire width of the drive head, a suction fan mounted in said chamber, driving means for said fan mounted in the drive head outside of said chamber, a rotatable waste collecting drum, a suction pipe leading from said drum to the suction fan within said chamber, said chamber being provided with removable slotted end walls on opposed sidesthe'reof, and filter elements within said chamber at either side of said suction ran, said fllte'r'ele ments including each a base-and'twoupstanding filter screening carrying frames disposed at an angle to each other, said filter elements being each removable as a. whole from said chamber.
3. In apparatus for removing waste in a combing or similar textile machine, said machine having a drive head, a chamber in the drive head havin'gclosecl top, bottom and side walls, and
"apertured-removable end walls, a suction fan within: said chamber, driving means for said fan mounted in the drive head outside of said chamber, a rotatable waste'collecting drum, =a's'uction pipe leadingv from said drum and transversely extending into-said chamber-and connected to said 4 fan, two filter elements disposed oppositely of each other within said chamber on either side of said suction pipe and fan, said filter elements extending the entire width of said chamber inside of the removable apertured end walls thereof, whereby the stream of air drawn through said suction pipe is delivered into said chamber in the space between said opposite filter elements and expulsed through said apertured end walls, each filter element including a base and two upstanding' filter screening carrying frames disposed at anangle to each other, said elements being removableas a whole-from said chamber upon rexmov'al of saidapertured end walls.
