It :is among the objects of the invention to provide a sprinkler assemb1y which can be connected 110 a Water faucetto receive a continuous supply of .water and includes means for supplying water at a pressure reduced from the pressure of the water at the faucet, which includes a hand-operated sprinklerand means for manually controlling the discharge of water from the sprinkler, and which is simple and durable in construction, easy to attach to. a faucet and use. economical to -manufaeture, and *neat andat tractive in zappearan.

The sprinkler assembly of the invention comprises, in general, a pressure-reducing unit H attachable -tothe faucet le, .3, portable sprink1er unit .12 and a flexible conduit l3 connecngthe sprinkler unit l2 to the pressure-reducingumit Il.

3 the valve plate 21 at a value determined by the strength of the spring 24. As soon as the water pressure between the faucet and the valve body 23 exceeds this value, the spring 24 will be partly 4 collapsed permitting the valve body to move away from the valve scat and discharge some of the water through the opening l6 in the bottom wall of the housing, which water falls into the sink or basin below the faucet and is discharged through the usual drain connection.
The sprinkling unit 12 comprises a housing having a side wall 33 which is also preferably of cylindrical shape. and a bottom wall 3l provided with a large number of very small perforations or orifices 32. The side wall 30 i provided with external screw-threads at its end opposite the bottom wall 31 and a peripheraHy-flanged top wall or cover 33 is threaded onto these screwthreads. The cover 33 is provided with a centrally-located aperture boss 34 which provides a guide for a valve stem or plunger 35.
An annular ring 36 is provided in the side wall 30 intermediate the length thereof, and this ring has an internally-screw-threaded portion 37 terminating in an inwardly-extending flange 38. A circular valve plate 39 having peripheral screwthreads thereon is threaded into the ring 38 and against the shoulder provided by the flange 38, and this valve plate has a centrally-disposed opening surrounded by a beveled valve scat 49.
The valve stem 35 extends though the boss 34 inwardly of the housing of the unit I2 and a valve head 4i is secured to this valve stem at the inner end thereof, the valve head being disposed at the side of the valve plate 39 opposite the cover 33. A spring abument 42 is fixed on the valve stem at the inner side of the cover 33, and a coiled compression spring 43 surrounds the valve stem between this abutmcnt and the valve plate 36. The valve plate 36 is provided with an annular flange or boss 44 surrounding the opening therein and receiving the adjacent end of the spring 43 to hold this end of the spring against movement relative to the valve plate and the spring abutment 42 is provided with a marginal flange 45 receiving the opposite end of the spring. A gasket 46 is carried by the spring abutment and is compressed between the sprin abutment and the cover 33 when the valve 4] is closed to prevent leakage of water through the boss 34 around i the stem 35.
The outer end of the stem 35 is provided with external screw-threads and a valve knob or button 41 is threaded onto this end of the stem.
When the valve knob 41 is forced toward the cover 33, the valve head 4l will be moved away from the valve scat 40 to open the valve and permit the water to be discharged through the perforations 32 in the bottom wall 3l and when manual pressure is removed from the knob 41, the spring 43 will close the valve. The spring 43 is preferably made somewhat stronger than the spring 24, so that When the spring 43 closes the valve in the sprinkler unit, the valve in the pressure-controfling unit will be open to permit a discharge of water through the pressure-controlling unit.
The side wall 30 of the sprinkler unit is provided with an opening 48 between the cover 33 and the valve plate 39 and a tubular fitting 49 is secured to the side wall 30 in registry with the opening 48 to provide an inlet conduit and projects outwardly from the side wall 30 to receive the adjacent end of the flexible conduit 13.
The conduit l3 may be formed of any suitable,
flexible material, such as rubber, synthetic resin plastic or artificial rubber.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which corne within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
1. A sprinkler assembly for attachment to the discharge end of a spigot comprising a pressurereducing unit having an inlet at one end and a by-pass outlet controlled by a spring-biased valve at the opposite end arranged so that the inlet end is in alignment with said spigot discharge end, a resilient sleeve carriedby the discharge end of said spigot and embracing a portion of said unit adjacent the inlet end for securing said unit to said spigot discharge end, a discharge conduit extending transversely through the wall of said unit adjacent and spaced from the inlet end and secured to the unit, a flexible conduit positioned exteriorly of said discharge conduit and having one end connected to the other end of said discharge conduit, a sprinkler unit closed at both ends and provided with an inlet conduit projecting transversely from the wall of said sprinkler unit adjacent and spaced from one of the closed ends thereof positioned adjacent the other end of said flexible conduit and having its inlet conduit connected to the other end of said flexible conduit, the other closed end of said sprinkler unit being provided with a plurality of perforations, a valve seat fixedly positioned transvasely of and within said sprinkler unit between and spaced from the other perforated closed end of said sprinkler unit and said inlet conduit, a valve positioned within said sprinkler unit intermediate said valve scat and said perforated end of said sprinkler unit and mounted in said unit for movement into and out of seating engagement with said valve scat, and hand actuable means exteriorly of said one closed end of said sprinkler unit and operativcly connected to said valve for efiecting movement of said valve out of seating engagement with said valve seat.
2. A sprinkler assembly for attachment t0 a discharge end of a spigot comprising a pressurereducing unit having an inlet at one end and a bypass outlet controlled by a springbiased valve at the opposite end arranged so that the inlet end is in alignment with said spigot discharge end, a resilient sleeve carried by the discharge end of said spigot and embracing a portion of said unit adjacent the inlet end for securing said unit to said spigot discharge end, a discharge conduit extending transversely through the wall of said unit adjacent to and spaced from said inlet end and secured to the unit, a flexible conduit positioned exteriorly of said discharge conduit and having one end connected to the other end of said discharge conduit, a sprinkler unit closed at both ends and provided with an inlet conduit projecting transversely from the wall of said sprinkler unit adjacent to and spaced from one of the closed ends thereof positioned adjacent the other end of said flexible conduit and having its inlet conduit connected to the other end of said flexible conduit, the other closed end of said Sprinkler unit being provided with a plurality of perforations, a valve seat fixedly positioned transversely of and wlthin said sprink1er unit between and spaced from the other perforated closed end of said unit, and said lnlet conduit, a valve positioned Within said sprinkler 5 for urging the latter into seating engagement with said valve seat.
