UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATSON J. MILLER AND THOMAS L. I. BULLUSS, OF BIRMINGHAM, AND HENRY BERRY, OF HUNTINGTON, ASSIGNORS TO THE DERBY SIL- VER COMPANY, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
BuTTERv-DlsH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of :Letters Patent No. 259,988, dated June 20, 1882.
Application filed April 17; 18827. (No model.)
To all 'whom 'it may concern: A
Be it known that we, W. J. MILLER, of Birmingham, county of New Haven, T. L. I. BULLUSS, of Birmingham, county of New lHaven, and HENRY BERRY, of Huntington,
in the county of Fairfield and State of Gonnecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in CoveredDishes; andwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical sectional view of our dish, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to covered dishes, jewel-caskets, &c. 5 and it consists in the novel construction andarran gement of the parts of the same, as will'be hereinafter fully described,
and particularly ypointed out in the claims.-
In the accompanying drawings, the letter D indicates the body of the receiver or dish, and
C the cover thereof, having a central slot or aperture, a.
The dish er receiver is provided witharaised arm, frame, or handle, H, which is preferably constructed with parallel side bars, b, snicient-v 1y close together to form slide-guides for the lugs or projections l of the cover. f
It is obvious that, instead of parallel guidebars, a single grooved or ribbed guide will be suficient, and sometimes no guides will be needed-as for instance, when the cover is suspended from a single overhangin g arm of curved or angular form.
Small angular dogs d, pivoted in bearings of the dish or body portion D, and weighted to gravitate inward or toward the center, serve to engage projecting portions of the cover and hold it down, thereby closing the dish or receiver. To` armsc oi' these dogs are connected the branchesof a bow or handle, h, whereby they are 4moved outward and disconnected from the cover, when it is desired to raise the latter.
Within the cover (l is located a detachable plate, P, to which is connected a spring-case, k, and spring s, operating to wind up a metallic tape, T, or chain or other connection, extending through the aperture a. of the cover, and secured by its upper end to a catch or attachment, m, of the handle, arm, or frame H, above the central portion of the cover. lThe spring employed is designed to have suflicient strength to wind up the tape or connection T on its drum, when the cover is released from the dogs, thereby raising said cover and sustaining the same in the raised position until it is epressed for engagement with the holdingogs. i
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
l. In a butter or other dish, the combination, with a cover having a central aperture, a, of the detachable interior plate, P, carrying the operating-spring s and strap T, substantially as specified.
2. A dish or receptacle having the raised handle or frame H and its slideguides, the automatic angledogs, and the. gravitating handle or bow h, connected to arms of said dogs, substantially as specified.
-3. As an improved article of manufacture, a dish or receiver having a raised handle or arm and automatic holding-dogs, a cover suspended from said handle or arm by a tape or connection passing through its central aperture, and connected to aninterior spring winding device, substantiallyas speciied.
In testimony that l.we claim the above wel have hereunto vsubscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
