GUIDE MEANS FOR WOOD SHAPEES Clarence H. Kcmmercr, Emmaus, Pa.
Application-April 5, 1951, SerialNo. 219,469
Claims. 1
This invention relates to guide means for wood shaper-s.
An object of the present invention is to provide a guide means for wood shaper-s which has an effective work guiding width such as to enable a work piece to be subjected to any desired shaping operations.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a guide means for wood shapers which is adapted for securement to a work table and the housing of a portable wood shaper when the latter named housing is attached to the work table in such manner that its rotatable cutter shaft extends horizontally over the work table in substantial parallelism with the latter.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a guide means for a portable wood shaper which is simple in structure, highly efiicient in action, and commercially feasible.
Other objects and features of novelty will be apparent from the description taken in conjunction with the drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the guide means of the present invention applied to a work table and the housing of a portable wood shaper.
Figure 2 is an exploded view of the guide means shown in Figure 1. i
Figure 3 is an end view of the right hand guide element of the guide means shown in Figure 2, viewed from the left of such element.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of another form of the guide means of the present invention applied to a work table and the housing of a portable wood shaper.
Figure 5 is an end view of the left hand guide element of the guide means shown in Figure 4,
viewed from the left of such element.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, the numeral [0 designates a work table to which is secured the housing I I of a portable Wood shaper l2. A rotatable cutter shaft 13 extends horizontally from the housing I I over the work table It in substantial parallelism with the upper surface of the work table, the shaft 13 carrying a cutter I4 inwardly of one end thereof. Complemental spaced guide elements 15 and I6 arranged in (c1. mt -134i 2 above the slot I1 is cut away at an angle to provide a downwardly sloping end face portion l8. Fixedly superimposed upon the sloping end face portion l8 of the guide element 15 is a plate l9 having a rounded face, the plate extending from the bottom edge of the portion 18 toward and spaced from the top edge of such portion. The complemental guide element l6 takes the form of an upstanding bar and is likewise cut away at an angle to provide a downwardly sloping end face portion 20, and on such end face portion is also fixedlysuperimposed a plate 2|, the plate extending from the bottom edge of the portion 20 toward and spaced from the top edge of such portion. The sloping end face portions 18 and 20 of the guide elements I5 and [6 respectively form together a trough shaped guideway for guiding a work piece over the. cutter l4 and transversely of the cutter shaft l3. It is to be noted that the complemental guide elements 15 and IE have an effective work guiding width which is at least as great as the diameter of the cutter shaft I3 and not greater than the width of the shaper housing I I.
In the form of Figures 4 to 6 inclusive, the guide means comprises complemental guide elements 30 and 3| arranged in aligned spaced. relation which are secured respectively to the work table 10 and the wood shaper housing H. The guide element 30 takes the form of an inverted U-shaped member or hood which is slidably and adjustably secured to an upstanding inverted U-shaped support 33 fixedly carried by the work table I0 by means of a threaded bolt 34 extending through the hood and support and a wing nut 32 in threaded engagement with the free end. of the bolt 34. The one end of the wood shaper shaft l3 extends in to the guide element or hood 30. It is to be noted that the support 33 is adjustably secured to the work table If! by means of bolts 35 extending through the base of the support and the adjacent portion of the work table. The guide element 3| takes the form of an upstanding bar, the end of such bar which faces the guide element 30 having a projecting abutment 36. The complemental guide elements 30 and 3| likewise have an effective work guiding width which isat least as great as the diameter of the cutter shaft I3 and not greater than the width of the shaper housing ll.
In operation of the form of the guide means of Figures 1 to 3, a work piece in the form of. a table leg is placed transversely within thetrough guideway formed by the cooperating sloping'end face portions wand 26 of the guide elements 15 and I6 and over the cutter shaft 13 with the adjacent portions of the table leg bearing against the rounded faces of the plates I9 and 2| on the sloping end face portions I8 and 20 and the ends of the table leg spaced from the bounding edges of the trough guideway. With the table leg thus positioned, the operator then urges the leg into and out of engagement with the cutter I4 while reciprocating the leg in the trough guideway. By these operations it is possible to effect rounding and chamfering of portions of the table leg in either straight or curved paths.
For use of the form of the guide means of Figures 4 to 6, a work piece in the form of a table leg with the leg having a fiat surface along a portion of its length is placed transversely of the guide elements 30 and 3| and over the cutter shaft l3 with the flat surface of the table leg abutting against the abutment 36. With the table leg thus positioned, the operator then urges the portion of the leg opposite its fiat surface into and out of engagement with the cutter l4 while reciprocating the table leg between the guide elements 30 and 3|. By these operations it is possible to effect rounding and chamfering of portions of the table leg other than the flat surface portion in either straight or curved paths.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: i
1. The combination with a work table and a portable type wood shaper having a housing arranged so that the housing is perpendicular to the edge of the work table and secured to the work table, a rotatable cutter shaft extending horizontally from the housing over the work table in substantial parallelism with the upper surface of the work table, and a cutter on said cutter shaft, of means for guiding a work piece over said cutter transversely of the cutter shaft comprising two complemental guide elements secured respectively to the top of the work table and to the upper part of the housing of the wood shaper and having an effective work guiding width at least as great as the diameter of the cutter shaft and not greater than the width of the shaper housing, said guide elements extending generally longitudinally of said cutter shaft and in longitudinal alignment with respect to each other.
