This invention relates to new and useful improvements in structural renements in rinsing devices for wringers, more particularly, washing machine wringers, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate eiicient removal of soap, scum and other foreign matter from clothes before they are passed through the wringer, thus resulting in a whiter, cleaner wash and in the elimination of such foreign matter which, if permitted to remain, has a tendency to cause discomfort to the wearer or user of the clothes.
This object is achieved by the provision of a rinsing device which, being disposed in advance of the wringer, is adapted to deliver streams of water onto the wash as well as onto the rotating rollers of the Wringer, so that the wash is thoroughly rinsed before it is subjected to the wringing operation.
The primary feature of the invention, therefore, resides in the structural arrangement of the rinsing device itself, while another feature lies in the attachment of the rinsing device to the wringer mechanism.
Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its convenient operation, and in its adaptability to Wringers of different sizes and types, not necessarily those used on washing machines.
With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a washing machine wringer, showing the invention attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional View, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan View of the subject shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1; and,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, similar to that shown in Figure 2, but illustrating a modied embodiment of the invention.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specicatlon and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more particularly to Figures 1-4 inclusively, the general reference character I0 designates a conventional wringer including a housing I2 provided with a pair of rotatable wringer rollers I4, I6, while the invention assumes the form of a rinsing attachment designated generally by the reference character I8.
This attachment embodies in its construction a horizontally elongated member 20 assuming the form of an inverted channel and affording a horizontally elongated chamber 22, the member 20 being provided on the upper surface thereof with a pair of upstanding brackets 24 which, in turn, are adjustably connected to a pair of links 26. The latter are, in turn, adjustably connected to a pair of additional brackets 28 secured to the wringer housing I2, this arrangement being best shown in Figures 2 and 3, from which it will be apparent that by virtue thereof the member 20 is disposed in advance of and slightly above the wringer roller I4.
The adjustable connection of the links 26 to the brackets 24, 28 is eiiected by providing the links with serrated locking members 30 which operatively engage co-acting serrated members 32 provided at the upper ends of the brackets 24, 28, suitable pivot pins or studs 34 extending through the respective brackets 24, 28, through the juxtaposed elements 30, 32, and through the links 26 as is shown in Figure 3, and suitable compression springs 36 and wing nuts 38 being provided on the pivot pins or studs 34, so that by simply compressing the springs, the elements 30, 32 may be disengaged from each other to facilitate swinging movement of the brackets 24 relative to the links 2B as well as swinging movement of the links 2B relative to the brackets 28, so that the member 20 may be raised to an inoperative position as illustrated by the dotted line 40 when the use of the rinsing device is not desired.
Referring now to the structural arrangement of the member 29 itself, it is to be noted that the bottom 42 of this member is provided with a horizontally elongated, angularly disposed nozzle 44 and with a downwardly directed, horizontally elongated nozzle 46, these two nozzles communi- -cating with the chamber 22, so that when liquid rinsing agent is delivered into the chamber, a
stream thereof will be discharged through the nozzle 44 onto the Wringer roller I4, while a second stream of the rinsing agent will be discharged downwardly onto the Wash passing to the Wringer. Needless to say, the nozzles 44, 46v are elongated, extending substantially throughout the entire length of the member 20, and it is to be also noted that they are substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roller I4, so that the rinsing agent discharged from the nozzles is distributed equally throughout the length of the roller I 4 as well as on the entire width of the wash passing to the wringer.
The liquid rinsing agent, preferably water, is delivered into the chamber 22 by means of a flexible hose 48 which is connected to a shut-off valve 5U, the latter, in turn, communicating with the chamber 22 through the medium of a tubular adaptor or nipple 52, as will be clearly apparent. This adaptor is disposed in the top wall of the member 2D and adjacent one end of the latter, and accordingly, to assure proper distribution of water through the nozzles 44, 46, a baffle 54 is provided in the chamber 22 under the adaptor 52, substantially as shown.
The baille 54 extends only along a portion of the length of the chamber 22 and is spaced from the side walls of the chamber as at 5S, so as to permit a certain amount of water to pass downwardly in a direct fashion, while a substantial amount of water is diverted by the baille plate to the remaining end portion of the chamber 22 wherein the baille plate is not provided.
The embodiment of the invention above described is primarily intended to be used as an attachment to any conventional wringer, while the modified embodiment illustrated in the accompanying Figure 5 is intended as a built-in feature of new wringers, wherein the chamber forming member 60 is mounted directly within the wringer housing I2 and is preferably of an arcuate cross section so that it may be disposed in spaced, concentric relation to the roller I4.
The member 60 affords the water chamber 62 provided with the outlet nozzles 64, 65, the former being directed downwardly onto the wash, while the latter is angulated and directed toward the rollerv I4. Water is delivered into the chamber 62 through the inlet hose 68, similar to the aforementioned hose 48, and needless to say, the member 60 is mounted in the housing I2 in any suitable manner. It is to be noted that the chamber 62 is provided with a baille plate I0 which extends only along a portion of the length of the chamber, and, in this instance, on the bottomwall I2v ofthe chamber, affording a space or slot I4 adjacent the top wall, through which water may escape to the nozzles directly below the inlet 68.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A spraying device of the type described, comprising a horizontally elongated housing affording a unitary chamber, said chamber having closed ends and including a pair of spaced side walls, a top wall, and a bottom wall provided at the lower edges of said side Walls with longitudinally extending slots defining a pair of elongated outlet nozzles, a water inlet port provided on said housing and communicating with the upper portion of said chamber. and a baille plate secured in said housing under said inlet port, said baffle plate being substantially shorter than said chamber and being spaced at least from one of said side walls.
2. A spraying device for attachment with a wringer adjacent the wringer rolls comprising an elongated enclosed fluid conduit disposed substantially parallel to the axes of said rolls, said conduit having a wall portion thereof provided with openings therein, certain of said openings comprising at least one narrow slot disposed lengthwise of said conduit and angularly positioned to direct fluid against at least one of the wringer rolls in a continuous longitudinal curtain, certain other of said wall openings being located outwardly and away from the plane of the wringer rolls and comprising at least one narrow slot in said conduit arranged to direct fluid in a continuous curtain across an area displaced outwardly from said rolls and at the clothes receiving side thereof.
3. A spraying device for attachment with a wringer adjacent theV wringer rolls comprising an elongated enclosed fluid conduit disposed substantially parallel to the axes of said rolls, said conduit having a wall portion thereof provided with openings therein, certain of said openings comprising at least one narrow slot disposed lengthwise of said conduit and angularly positioned to direct fluid against at least one of the wringer rolls in a continuous longitudinal curtain, certain other of said wall openings being located outwardly and away from the plane of the wringer rolls and comprising at least one narrow slot in said conduit arranged to direct fluid in a continuous curtain across an area displaced outwardly from said rolls and at the clothes receiving side thereof, and fluid inlet means connected with said conduit to direct fluid into the same and in the general direction of` said narrow fluid discharge slots, and said conduit having a fluid distribution baille therein disposed in the path of fluid from said fluid inlet means to disseminate the fluid through the length of said conduit for distributed discharge out of the respective wall slots in said conduit.
