COMBINED COVER AND SILENCER FOR ELECTRIC SHAVERS Stanley T. Wagner, Chicago, Ill.

My invention relates to electric Shavers of the type wherein an elongated body mounts a motor and wherein a shaving head is secured to one end of the body for actuation by the motor. Such bodies are generally formed of plastic material and are readily frangible if the body is dropped onto the floor. Likewise, in use, such Shavers are relatively noisy. Further, the shaver heads and interiors of the bodies are exposed to some extent to dust and dirt which has a damaging effect on the operation of the device.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of my invention to provide an improved cover for an electric shaver of the class described, which cover is eiective to protect the body of the shaver against damage from falls, and which cover likewise protects the interior of the body from dust and dirt and also provides a soundinsulating device for silencing the shaver.
A further object is to provide an improved cover for an electric shaver of the class described which includes a relatively thick envelope including a relatively thick ply of sound-insulating material substantially enclosing the body of the shaver.
A further object is to provide an improved cover for an electric shaver which includes a tubular ply of sound-insulating material formed from a relatively thin strip of sound-insulatingk material wrapped about the body of the electric shaver to provide a plurality of turns in edge-toedge relation, together with means for securing said turns together in the relation aforesaid.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon reference to the following specication in connection with the attached drawing and to the appended claims.

Figure 1 is an elevational view of the cover according to the invention showing the same applied to an electric shaver, parts being broken away to Show the structure of the cover;
Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1, but looking from the right of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1, parts being broken away and shown in horizontal section;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view taken substantially on the plane of the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring specically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, I0 l designates the body of any suitable electric shaver having its forward end provided with any suitable shaver head I2 and a tapered rear end I3 adapted to be detachably connected to a plug I4 for an electric cord I5. It is understood that the body I0 encloses an electric motor, not shown, which may be started by the usual Starting wheel II, Figure 1. As so farv described, the structure is conventional and forms no part of my invention.
The cover which is generally indicated at IE comprises a relatively thick inner ply of shockabsorbing, sound-insulating material which is preferably enclosed by a relatively thin cover ply I'I which may be of any suitable textile materal. The inner ply comprises a strip I8 of flexible insulating material which is wrapped spirally about the body I0 to provide a plurality of turns in edge-to-edge relation. Preferably, the edges I9 of the strip I8 are diagonally directed and parallel to each other whereby to provide a close, tight t with each other. The several turns of the strip I8 are held together in any suitable manner. However, a convenient method of securing them together is accomplished by imposing one or more strips 20 of adhesive tape onto the cover or body I0 longitudinally thereof with the tacky side of the tape 2B outermost. Thereafter, the wrapping of the strip I8 about the body I0 automatically secures the edges I9 of the strip together in edge-to-edge relation. Obviously, the several turns of the strip I8 could be secured together in other ways, as by being stitched together, or by coating the edges I9 with adhesive whereby to adhesively connect the several turns together. It should be noted, also, that the lowermost turns of the strip I8 extend from the lower end of the plug I4 upwardly to the region of the head I2, whereby to provide a tubular ply substantially complementary to the shape of the assembled shaver. However, it should be understood that the upper turns of the strip I8 terminate with respect to the shaver head I2 so that free movement and use of the shaver head is possible without removing the envelope formed by the strip I8. Likewise, it is preferred that an opening 2| be formed through the inner and outer plies so as to overlie the starting wheel II and permit access to the same. After the strip I8 has been assembled, I prefer to apply a plurality of longitudinally-extending strips 22 to thel exterior thereof so as to extend transversely of the turns and longitudinally of the body I0. Such raised strips 22 may be of the same material as the strip I8 and provide a convenient hand grip to prevent slipping of the assembly in use. The cover ply I'I has secured thereto a cap 23 for the shaver head I 2 The cap 23 is securedv to the upper end of the cover ply in any suitable manner, as by the stitching 24. The free end of the cap 23 is secured to the opposite side of the cover ply I1, as by a snap fastener 25. The lower end of the coveraply. I claim:`

In an electric shaver, a cover for the body of the shaver, said cover including a relatively thick inner ply of tubular form; said'ply being substantially complementary toi-said body and adapted to receive the same therein with the head of the shaver exposed, said ply being of sound-insulatinggmaterialb. a relatively thin cover ply enclosing said inner ply, a cap for said shaver head hingedly connected to one end of said cover ply,l a cap-hingedly secured to the other end of saidcover, and saidlastnamed cap being formed with a slot therein.
