corporation of Michigan Application December 29, 1945, Serial No. 638,316
(01. B L-18d) 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in drain valve and impeller assembly for dishwashers and the like of the type disclosed in co-pending application, Serial No. 638,27 3, filed December 29, 1945. As its principal object, the present invention provides an improved motor impeller drain valve unit in which the movement of the motor armature relative to its magnetic field is employed to actu- The vat l 9 has an opening [2 closed by a sump.
it to which the motor housing [6 is attached by bolts E8. A gasket and seat 2!! seals the joint between the vat it) and the sump l4 and provides a conical seat 22 for the drain valve 24.
The armature 26 has a driving shaft 28 having slip fit at 3t! with the bearing 32 and a similar fit at it with the bearing 36. An impeller 39 is attached to the upper end 38 of the shaft 28 through a screw til. The support 42 carries a sleeve bearing M, having a slip fit with the shaft 28 as well as a seal 46. The tubular section 48 of the valve 24 is piloted with a slip fit by a bearing ring 58 which also serves as an abutment and seat for the spring '52. The upper end of the spring 52 abuts the vertical end Wall 54 of the valve 24 to support the same in the open position indicated in the drawing. A spring washer 55 disposed between the thrust bearing and Wear washer 6i! and the end wall 54 to provide a slight frictional drag between the impeller 39 and the valve E l tending to at least partially rotate the valve 2% before and after fully engaging with its seat 22.
When the circuit of a motor I6 is closed, the magnetic field set up by the winding 62 will tend to centralize the armature 26 in that field. This will result in a downwardpull which will compress the spring 52 and bring the valve 24 into sealing engagement with its seat 22. The friction between seat 22 and valve 24 will more than overcome the slight tendency for the valve 24 to rotate with the impeller 39, which is then being rotated at motor speed. When the motor circuit is open, the spring 52 is then permitted to lift the parts into the position shown in the drawing, which will open the valve 24. I
Arrangements other than that illustrated in the drawing for utilizing the magnetic forces for closing the drain valve should readily occur to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim is new and desire to be covered by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a dishwashing machine having a Washing vat with a central drain opening, a drain structure connected with said opening, a motor housing located below said structure and a vertical impeller shaft support extending from said drain structure through said drain opening into said vat, of a vertical impeller drive shaft disposed in said support for vertical endwise movement and having an impeller carried on its upper end, a valve for controlling said drain opening, spring means continuously acting upon said valve and shaft to elevate the same to open said drain, a motor in said housing including fixed field windings, and an axially movable armature within said windings and connected to said impeller shaft to rotate the same and to move therewith as a unit, said spring means with said motor inactive elevating said armature partially out of the magnetic field of said windings to open said valve to drain said vat, the magnetic field of said windings established when energized acting upon said armature to low said shaft and valve against the tension of said spring means to close said valve.
2. The combination as defined in claim 1 wherein said spring means is inserted between the upper portion of said support and said valve, and means defining an abutment connection between said impeller and said valve whereby axial movement is transferred between said shaft and valve through said impeller.
