Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful i provements in smokers pipes and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a combination pipe and lighter that is extremely small and compact in structure to facilitate the same to be conveniently handled or carried in a desirable manner.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a pipe bowl, a flint-actuated .lighter recessed in the bowl adjacent a tobacco receiving chamber in the bowl, said lighter including a hinged closure, and novel and improved means simultaneously actuated for raising the closure and actuating the lighter.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a self lighting pipe including a novel and improved flint-actuated lighter that is quickly and readily operated for lighting tobacco disposed in the pipe bowl in an efficient and eifective manner.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a combination pipe and lighter that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present self lighting pipe;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the present invention, and showing the closure in a closed position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the present self lighting pipe, and with parts thereof broken away and shown in section, and with dotted lines showing the. closure in an open position; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of sectionline 4-4 of Figure 2, and showing the closure in a raised position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents the present self lighting pipe generally including a bowl 12 having an elongated, integral extension l4 the upper face l6 of which is coplanar with the upperface N3 of the bowl I2.
The bowl I 2 is provided with a tobacco receiving chamber or recess 20 that communicates with a smoke bore 22 provided in the bowl I2 and extension I4.
The extension I4 is also provided with a recess or chamber 24 in its upper portion that is separated from the recess 20 by a partition 26 which is integrally formed with the bowl l2. The upper beveled or inclined edge 28 of the partition 26 terminates inwardly from the upper face l8 of the bowl l2.
Recessed in the chamber 24, is a flint-actuated lighter unit 30 including an inclined forward wall 32, a bottom wall 34, a rear wall 36. side walls 38, and an upper wall 40. Integrally formed with the upper wall 46 and the upper edge 42 of the forward wall 32 that engages the upper edge 28 of the partition 26, is an arcuate partition 44.
Extending through an aperture 46 provided in the extension [4 and through openings 48 and 50 provided in the bottom wall 34 and partition 44, is a tubular support 52 that receivably engages a sprin adjusting screw 54 at its lower end.' The upper end 56 of the support 52 is bifurcated and supports a transverse shaft 58 the ends of which are fixed to the side walls 38.
A flint engaging wheel 60 mounted on the shaft 58 between the furcations of the end 56 is rotatable to engage a spring urged flint 62 slidably carried by the support 52.
Pivotally mounted on the shaft 58, are the depending ears 64 of a closure plate 66 that is provided with a flange 68 for engaging the upper edge 42 of the forward wall 32.
Embracing the shaft 58 is a coil spring 10 having ends 12 and 14 one of which for example, 14, engages the partition 44 and the remaining end, 12, engages a further shaft 16 carried by the cars 64 to normally urge the closure 66 to an open position.
A cam or pawl 18 is carried by the shaft 16 and engages the wheel 60 to rotate the same as the closure is moved to an open position. This pawl 78 is suitably attached to one end of a coil spring 86 mounted on the shaft 16, and the other end of the spring 80 is suitably attached to one of the ears 64 to retain the pawl 18 directly over the wheel 60.
A wick or wicks 82 mounted in the lighter 30 extend through the partition 44 and are saturated by a packing 84 in the lighter 30.
A closure plug 86 removably carried by the upper wall 40 facilitates the insertion of a lighter flgiqid into the lighter 30 to saturate the packing Fixedly secured to the lighter unit 30 by a pivot P and engaging one of the cars 64, is a lever arm 88 that is connected at its lower end to one side wall 38 of the lighter 38 by a spring 9|] that normally retains the upper end of the arm 88 against one of the ears 64 and the closure 66 in a closed position. The side walls 38 are formed with a recess R in which the spring 90, the lower end of the arm 88, the forward end of the rod 94 and the lower portion of the tube 52 are received.
Slidably positioned in an aperture 92 provided in the extension I4, is a finger actuated rod or plunger 94 having an inner bearing end 96 that engages the lever arm 88 to force the same forwardly to compress the spring 90 which will permit the spring 10 to force the closure 66 to an open position.
Integrally formed with the upper wall 40 of the lighter 30, is an ear 98 that receives a suitable fastener for securing the lighter 30 in the chamber 24.
It should be noted, that the closure 66 functions as a flame spreader over tobacco in the pipe bowl and further acts as a shield to prevent the flame from being directed toward the users face since the same will be disposed between the mouth engaging end of the pipe and the bowl to pivot upwardly.
In practical use of the present invention, when the outer and rear end of the rod 94 is pushed forwardly or inwardly, the lever arm 88 will be moved forwardly causing the closure 66 to open. During the opening of the closure 66, the pawl 18 will rotate the wheel 68 to strike the flint 62 and ignite the wick or Wicks 82.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even thoughthere is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl having a tobacco receiving chamber, a hollow extension projecting laterally from said bowl, a lighter unit mounted in said extension and having a recess in its upper portion and a closure for said recess, a spring yieldingly forming part of said lighter unit and urging the closure to an open position, said lighter unit including a flint engaging wheel, a pivot pin forming a portion of the lighter unit and supporting the closure, said pivot pin also supporting said wheel and said spring, means carried by said closure for imparting rotation to the wheel during opening of the closure, a pivotal lever forming a portion of the lighter unit for holding the closure in its closed position, resilient means acting on said lever for urging the latter to a position for holding the closure in its closed position, and a plunger slidably carried by said extension for Y engaging the lever to urge the lever against action of the resilient means.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said means carried by said closure for imparting rotation to said wheel includes a rod supported on said closure, a pawl received on the rod, and
a coil spring also received on the rod and urging the pawl into alignment with the 'wheel.
3. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl having a tobacco receiving chamber therein, a hollow extension projecting laterally and rearwardly from said bowl, a lighter unit mounted in said extension and detachably secured to said extension, said lighter unit having a recess in its upper portion, a shaft forming a portion of said lighter unit and positioned in said recess, said lighter unit including a flint engaging wheel mounted on said shaft and received in said recess, a member forming a part of said lighter unit and mounted on said shaft for swinging movement upwardly and rearwardly for exposing the wheel and forwardly and downwardly for closing the recess, a spring also forming part of the lighter unit and supported on the shaft and yieldingly urging the member upwardly and rearwardly, means carried by and movable with the member for imparting rotation to said wheel during upwardly and rearwardly swinging movement of said member, a pivotal lever forming a part of said lighter unit for retaining the member in its position for closing the recess, a resilient element acting on the lever and holding the lever in a position for blocking opening of said member, and a slidable operator carried by said extension for engaging and imparting pivotal movement to said lever to permit opening of said member, said member constituting a combined closure, flame spreader and face shield.
4. A smoking pipe comprising an elongated casing having a tobacco receiving chamber, a lighter unit recessed in said casing adjacent the chamber and including a flint engaging wheel and a swingable member functioning as a combined closure, flame spreader and face shield, means forming a portion of the lighter unit and urging the member to an open position, means forming a portion of said lighter unit and engaging the member to retain the latter in its closed position, said lighter unit including a means for engaging the retaining means to urge the retaining means out of engagement with said member, and means carried by and movable with the member for actuating the flint engaging wheel automatically with opening movement of the member, said retaining means including a swin'gable lever and a spring connecting the lever to a wall of the lighter unit.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said means for engaging the retaining means includes a finger actuated plunger paralleling the axis of said lighter unit.
