Nirnn GEORGE F. HARWOOD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEP FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,535, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed April 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HARWOOD, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Steps for Bicycles; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a neat and convenient step for bicycles which will form a sure support for the foot when mounting, and that will not catch into the clothing when dismounting or in cases of accident. This object I attain by a step device having a lateral guard constructed as shown in the drawings and herein described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved step, showing it attached to the back-bar of a bicycle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the step. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section at line a: w, and Figs. 4. and 5 show modified forms of attaching -plates to fit the different styles of bicycles in use.
My improved step is made with a central body or loop of metal, A, having upward and downwardly projecting edges or flanges, the upper one of which is serrated or notched with inwardly-inclined teeth a. Surrounding this loop or body is a horizontal] y-projectin g flange or guard, b, joined thereto just below the springing of the teeth a, and extending outward to a sufficient distance to ward off any object from the teeth except it approach directly from above. The body and guard-flange are made integral with an end plate, 0, for receiving the screws 6, whereby the step is attached to the backbone D of the bicycle. Said attaching-plate 0 may be of any convenient form for matching the screw-holes of bicycles of various manufacture, so that the improved steps can be put on to replace others now in use.
When in use the guard -tlange b prevents the clothing from being caught and torn by the teeth a when any part of the person is brought in contact with the step, and also permits of the teeth being formed of sufficient length to give a sure hold on the sole of the boot when mounting, thus avoiding liability of accidents by reason of the foot slipping from the step.
I. am aware that bicycle-steps having sawlike teeth have heretofore been used; but as such steps were quite liable to cause injuries and accidents by the teeth catching into the clothing, their use has been in a great measure discouraged. By my improvement, however, the objection to this class of step is obviated, while the advantages of a sure footing and safety against injury are attained.
WVhat I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The step A, having the row of upwardprojecting saw-like teeth a and the surrounding laterally projecting guard -flange 1), substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the back-frame in a bicycle, ot' a step consisting of the metal loop A, provided with attaching-plate O, and having upwardly-projecting teeth a and laterallyprojecting guard -fiange b, as shown and described.
Witness my hand this 4th day of April, A. D. 1882.
GEORGE F. HARWOOD.
