(C1. affissi' f1 This invention relates to a novel two piece jewelry clasp and to combinations of the clasp `with ornamental chains or strings whichare so constructed that the twol clasp parts may be attached to each other to form a necklace ory blacelet or may be attached separately to an article of apparel and be worn as a chatelaine.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel clasp for necklaces and bracelets.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel two part clasp in which the separate parts of the clasp have means for attaching onto wearing apparel.
Another object of the invention is 'to provide a novel two part clasp, each part of which has means enabling it to be attached to articles of apparel, purses, leather goods, etc., at least one of which means cooperates with other structure on the other part to clasp the two partsltogether when desired. I
These objects and others ancillary thereto are obtained by providing each of the parts of a two part jewelry clasp with a plural pronged pin, in addition providing the rst of the parts with a, stirrup loop adapted to be fitted over and securely held by the pin mechanism of the second part and yet so constructed as-not to interfere with the operation of the pin mechanism on the nrst part.
The pin mechanisms preferably take the shape u shaft running transversely to the base thereof v and the stirrup means is pivotally mounted on the same shaft. The forked prongs of the second part are pivotally mounted on a shaft which is "held in spaced relation to the back of the part so that the stirrup can be slipped over the forked prongs and held securely behind the shaft on whichthe prongs are held by the ears or other meansiwhich connect the prong containing shaft totheback of the second part.
Each of the parts contains eyelets or other meansfor attaching a string, thread, chain or other linear flexible element thereto. The term string" as used in the specication and claims is intended to include all such linear flexible elements which are either decorative, per se, and/or` are adapted to hold decorative elements such as beads, pearls, charms, pendants, lockets, etc.
The novel features characteristic of this invention are set forth with particularity in the v 2 appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional. objects and advantages thereof, will best-be understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:

Each part I0 and II of clasp shown in the drawing has two eyelets I2, I3, I4 and I5 each adapted to support the end of a chain, a wire or a thread containing, if desired, other decorative objects such as beads, pearls, charms, pendants, etc. A thread or string 20 is shown connected to eyelets I2 and I5 and a string 2I is shown connected to eyelets I3 and I4. The strings 20 and 2| as shown, are strung with beads or pearls 22, 22. The eyelets I2, I3 are formed in the metal backing 30 of part I0 and the eyelets I4 and I5 are formed in the metal backing 3l of part II. Soldered to the back 30 is a U-shaped strip 34, the sides 3.1 and 36 of which form ears to contain the bearings for the shaft 38 to which the pin holding clamp 39 is attached. Extending between the ears 31 and 36 is also a cup shaped spring 35 held in place by upturned flanges 52, 53, 54'and 55. This spring 35 is preferably separately formed and inserted between the loops 32 and 33 but it may be integral with, but indented from the bottom part of the U-shaped strip 34. The pin-holding clamp member 39 is crimped around the shaft 38 on one side and on the two sides perpendicular to the shaft 33 it is crimped about the pins 40, 4I. The pointed tips 42, 43 of the pins 40, 4I are preferably bent inwardly as shown.
The part I I as shown in Figures 3b and 4b has structure 34 to 42' which corresponds to parts 34-42 of Figures 3a and 4a, except that in the part II the shaft 38' extends beyond the ends of the ears '36', 31' and carries a pivotally attached stirrup holding means 50. This stirrup means 50 is adapted to fit closely over the pins 40', 4| when the part Il is to be fastened by attaching the pins 40', 4| to a garment, leather article or other fabric material. The stirrup 50 however is adapted to be looped over the pins 4B, 4I and the ears 36, 31 of member l0. The clamping strip 5| of the pin clamping member 39 also serves to hold the stirrup member 50 in place about the. earstf,` 31. of the part I0 (see, Figure 5),
The portion of the clamping members 39, 39' which extend around the shafts 38, 38' contains an integral projection adapted to bear against the cup shaped spring 35 or 35 as the pins and clamping member 39 or 39' are rotated so` that the pins snap into the closed position of Figures 1 and 5. When the clamping members l0 and l l are attached to each other the spring 35 together with the pressure of the body of the wearer against the pins 40, 4I prevents the stirrup member from coming 01T. The lever action of the second kind which the pins 40, 4| and the pin clamp 39 exert against the stirrup 5I] with the shaft 38' as the fulcrum, is considerable. By attaching a plurality of strings 20, 2l or chains to `the clasps. the tendency for the clasp to turn Wrong side` outward when it is worn as a necklace or bracelet is diminished.
The inventionv provides an article of jewelry 'which may be worn as a chatelaine or similar decorative attachment for a dress, coat, purse, etc. or since. the ends are fastenable it may be worn as a necklace orl bracelet depending on the lengthof the attached chains or strings. The
'two parts are easily attached together and in spite of the ease of attachment are securely held against separation. I claim:
' v l. A two-part dual-function jewelry clasp comprising a first part and a second part, said first part containingL means adapted to holdthel end of at least one string and having a substantially at back containing two ears extending substantially perpendiculalrly therefrom, means holding a plurality of pin elements pivotally supported from said ears, said second part containing means adapted to hold the Vend of at least one string, pin elements adapted to fasten the part, per se, to an article of wearing apparel, and, in addition, a stirrup shaped holding means adapted to cooperate with the ears and pivotally mounted pin elements of said rst part to securely attach the second part to said first part.
2. A two-part dual-function jewelry clasp comprising a rst part and a second part, said first 'part containing means adapted to hold the end of at least one string and having a substantially flat back containing two ears extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom, means holding a plurality of pin elements pivotally supported from said ears,y said second part containing means adapted to hold the end of at least one string and having a substantially flat back containing means for pivotally supporting a shaft, a shaft in said supporting means, pin `holding means attached to said shaft, a stirrupy shaped holding means pivotally supported from said shaft, said stirrup shaped holding means adapted to t about the said ears of said first part and adapted to be held in position by the. pin holding means of said rst` part.
