A 7' TORA/E V Patented Apr. 29, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLLAPSIBLE SAWHORSE LEG ASSEMBLY Fred Belle Loucks, Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.
Application February 27, 1948, Serial No. 11,561
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a saw horse, and more particularly to a novel collapsible workmans saw horse.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type provided with legs which may be collapsed against the under side of the body of the horse, for convenient storage and carriage of the device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible horse equipped with collapsible metal tubular legs, thus attaining a rigidity and strength not found in devices of the type now in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible horse with locking means for maintaining the same in set up position.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a saw horse embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the composite hinge assembly.
Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of the device.
Fig. 4 is an end view in elevation of the same.
Fig. 5 is a side view in elevation of the horse in collapsed position.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of a portion of the collapsed horse.
The numeral refers to the horse generally which comprises the usual horizontal rail i l which is rectangular in cross section and may be of Wood in the conventional 2 x 4 dimensions. having transversely therethrough adjacent its end the apertures l2. Compound hinges I3 are provided, and have the fixed leaves 14 secured to the under side l of the horizontal rail I l by threaded means l6. Each fixed plate l4 has hinged pin barrels ll at one end thereof complementary to the hinged pin barrel IS on the free hinge plate l 9, which latter has hinge pin barrels 20 disposed edgedly and longitudinally thereof complementary to the hinge pin barrels 2| of the wing plates 22 which are bored at 23 to receive the bolts 24 secured by the nut 25 when the horse is in set up position.
The tubular legs 26 are of metal and are brazed angularly to the wing plates 22 at 21 thereof. The upper end 28 of the legs 26 are obliquely cut to insure the proper stance thereof. The lower end 29 of legs 26 are appropriately cut so that they will rest level on any supporting surface. A strap 30 having a buckle 3| is provided to secure the 2 legs 26 in a collapsed position against the horizontal rail l I when the horse is folded.
In use, the legs 26 are unfolded to the set up position, whereupon the bolts 24 are inserted through the apertures at 23 of the plates 22 and the apertures l2 of the rail II. The nuts 25 are then turned up securely, thus providing rigidity to the structure. The horizontal rail ll may be of any appropriate length, and it will be seen that various lengths of horizontal rail may be employed in combination with the end member assemblies [3.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States, is:
In a collapsible saw horse having a wood body portion rectangular in cross-section, a leg assembly including a plate adapted to be fixed to the bottom of said body portion, a movable plate hinged transversely of the body portion to said first mentioned plate, a pair of side plates each hinged to opposite sides of said movable plate, said side plates adapted to rest against the side faces of said body portion when said saw horse is in set up position, and a tubular metal leg angularly anchored to each side plate, above the center thereof in said set up position, the area dimensions of a side plate being greater than the corresponding dimensions of the leg element face anchored thereto, said side plates each having a bolt opening in alined position for anchoring the legs in active service position and prevent collapse of the horse by single bolt connection through the body portion, release of the bolt permitting swinging of the hinged leg elements into collapsed position beneath the body portion.
