Description
UNITED STATES ATnNT FFICE.,
NATHANIEL n. WHITIN, or Nnw YORK, iv. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,593, dated April 29, 1842. i
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL D. WHITIN, v of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved cork` or bottle-stopper, called the combined cork for bottles containing luidscharged with gas, either artificially or by the process of fermentation and I do hereby declare that the following isa full and exact description of the same. v
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a cork or bottlestopper in combination with a small faucet or stop-cock, as shown in No. l of the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, No. 2 being a longitudinal section of the faucet, showing the internal construction of the same, which may be cast from'the alloy known as pewten77 The stop-cock or faucet may consist of two barrels or cylinders, a longitudinal section of Which is shown at F F, No. 2, one cylinder tting within the other, the surfaces which come in contact when thus fitted being supplied with a rapid screwthread, a transverse section of which is shown at E E E E, No. 2,
by which onecylinder is screwed down over the other. To one end of each cylinder is attached a smaller tube, A B, No. l, the tube B connected with the smaller and inner cylinder, having a screw-thread upon its outer surface by which it is screwed down through the cork C, No. l, affording a passage for the liquid through the cork. thin the inner and lower cylinder is a circular opening or valve, A A, No. 2, B B, No. 3, around a closed center, B, No. 2, C, No. 3. The lower end of the tube G G, No. 2, connected with the outer cylinder, extends within the cylinder, and has itted to it a leather washer or round piece of leather with a hole through its center, into which the lower end of the tubeI is inserted, forming the outlet from the faucet D. No. 2. This leathern washer, (a transverse section of which is shown at G C, No. 2,) is screwed down upon and made tol close the circular opening or valve in the lower cylinder by the action of the screw E E E E, No. 2, D, No. 3. The closed center B, No. 2, C, No. 3, of the valve within the inner cylinder is connected with the inner surface of thecy1inder by two arms, E E, No. 3, extending from the center of the valve to the inner surface of the cylinder.
Vhat I claim as I ny .invent-ion, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction of the cork or bottle-stopper, in combination with a faucet or stop-cock, for the purpose of forming a sort of iniperishable cork or stopper, by means of which aerated luidsasuch as porter, soda-water, mead, small beer, &c.-1nay be discharged in such quantities as may be desired without the escape of the gas and consequent deterioration otl the remaining contents of the bottle or the rel moval and destruction of the cork, it being intended to refill the bottle through the stopcock. In bottling soda-water the combined cork will beparticularly useful in obviating the difficulty of stopping the bottle before too much gas escapes.
