CORDING ATTACHMENT'FOR S EWING MACHINES Filed Nov. 25, 1949 John 6. McIntyre INVENTOR.
BY MM 3m Patented Apr. 22, 1952 UNITED STATES PA E OFFICE- CORDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES John C; McIntyre, TiconderogmN; Y. 7
Application N ovember 23, 19.49, Serial N10: 128,938.
2 Claims, I 1.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for sewing machines and more particularly to a welting or cording attachment for folding a tape about a cord as the same is fed to the sewing machine to form a sheath in which the cord is sewed.
An important object of the invention is to provide an elongated folding guide for the tape and a tubular guide for the cord with a resilient shoe for firmly holding the cord at the folded edge of the tape as it is delivered to the sewing machine to provide a tight fitting sheath for the cord.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character which may be easily and quickly attached in position to a sewing machine without necessitating any changes or alteration in the construction thereof and which at the same time is simple and practical in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the attachment in position on a sewing machine;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the welting or cording attachment;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates an elongated hollow tape folding guide which includes a tape receiving guide 6 at one end, an intermediate tape folding portion I and a delivery end 8.
The folding portion 1 of the guide is formed with upper and lower edges 9 and I0 curved gradually inwardly toward each other to form a hollow channel tapering toward the delivery end 8. An opening I2 is formed in the channel ll adjacent the delivery end 8 and a tubular cord guide I3 is suitably secured in the channel at the rear end mediate portion 1 where it is folded along a longi- 2 tudinal medial line before passing fromthe-delivery end 8;
A cord I5 is fed into the tubular guide l3 and a resilient shoe or finger I6 is curved inwardly adjacent the delivery end 8 into the opening 12 for pressing the cord I5 into the folded edge of the tape, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
In the use of the invention an attaching plate I! is suitably secured to the lower edge [0 at the intermediate folding portion 1 of the device which is secured to the bed plate or table l8 of a sewing machine by a set screw or the like I9 and with the delivery end 8 of the guide positioned adjacent the presser foot 20 of the machine. As the folded tape 2| is fed from the delivery end 8 of the guide 5 the needle 22 will sew the tape closely along the cord [5 to form a tight fitting sheath 23 at the folded edge of the tape and in which the cord is secured.
A separator 24 is suitably secured in the delivery end 8 of the guide 5 and which is positioned between and separates the free edges of the tape to hold the tape fiat and prevent overlapping or folding of the free edges of the tape as the same pass from the delivery end 8 to the needle 22.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A welting attachment for sewing machines comprising a hollow elongated guide having a flat tape receiving guide at one end and a folded tape delivery guide at its opposite end and also having a tape folding intermediate portion of hollow channel shape gradually tapering toward the delivery guide and including inner and outer walls, said tape folding intermediate portion having an opening in the inner wall thereof exposing the tape, a cord guide tube in the tape folding intermediate portion on the inner wall thereof and at the rear of said opening for guiding a cord into the opening to the exposed tape, and a resilient shoe fixed to said inner wall in said intermediate portion and projecting into the opening for pressing the cord against the tape exposed through said opening as it passes through the delivery guide.
2. A welting attachment for sewing machines comprising a hollow elongated guide having a flat tape receiving guide at one end and a folded tape delivery guide at its opposite end and also having a tape folding intermediate portion of hollow channel shape gradually tapering toward the delivery guide and including inner and outer walls, said tape folding intermediate portion having an opening in the inner wall thereof exposing the tape, a cord guide tube in the tape folding intermediate portion on the inner wall thereof and at the rear of said opening for guiding a cord into the opening to the exposed tape, a resilient shoe fixed to said inner wall in said intermediate portion and projecting into the opening forwardly of said guide tube for pressing the cord against the exposed tape as it passes through the delivery guide, and a separator in the delivery guide for the free edges of the tape forwardly of said shoe and engaging the exposed tape.
