Application October 25, 1948, Serial No. sassr V The present invention relates to an improved window construction which embodies some of the features ofmy copending application, Serial No. 754,5 2, filed June 13, 1947, together with certain improvements thereover, which copending application has since been abandoned.
vIt is an object of the present invention to provide a window construction which includes a novel, wholly enclosed Venetian blind having remotely controlled means for raising and lowering the same as well as like means for angularly adjusting the slats thereof.
.Another object of the invention is the provision .of a device of the character set forth having 3-3 of Figure 4 rotated 90 clockwise,

Generally, there is provided a window construction having an outer window pane and an inner window pane and having a Venetian blind mounted therebetween. The outer pane may be swingably mounted upon brackets for cleaning purposes and the inner pane may likewise be hingedly mounted to provide access to the interior mechanisms and also allow for cleaning. The Venetian blind is vertically movable by means of a revoluble handle mounted in the base of the device and the slats of the blind may be angularly controlled by a reciprocable cable which protrudes through the inner side of the base and which is equipped with an operating handle. Within the base there is provided an air passageway which is provided with louvers interior broken elevational view 3 Claims. (Cl. 160-407) at its outer side to prevent the entrance of snow and rain. Adjacent the louvers is mounted a filter screen to prevent the entrance of dust, insects and the like and centrally mounted in the passage is a damper which is controllable from the interior side of the base by. a handle having means whereby the same may be latched inselected positions. Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a window construction comprising a frame of wood or metal havinga top member I 0, side members I l-and l2 and a bottom member l3. The bottom member l3 may be slanted, as shown in Figure 4, to conform with the shape of the conventional window opening.
1 A base member [4 extends horizontally between the side members II and I2 and is spaced from the bottom member I 3 to form an air passageway [5. At the outer end of the passageway l5 there is provided a series of uprights 16 which interconnect the base I4 and the bottom member 13 and a series of louvers l1 extend in spaced relation outwardly from the uprights.
Immediately inwardly of the uprights. Hi there is provided a filter screenl8 which extends in a vertical plane and entirely covers the passageway l5.
Pivotally mounted upon the side members H and I2 of the frame by means of outwardly extending pins l9 carried thereby is a horizontally extending damper 20 which, when in a vertical plane, abuts at its upper end against a stop memher 2! having a facing 22 of felt or the like and which is dependantly carried by the base I 4. It also abuts at its lower end against a horizontally extending stop member 23 aflixed to the upper side of the bottom I3 of the frame and which is likewise provided with a facing 24 of felt or the like. l
The interior end of the passageway I5 is provided with a vertical panel 25 having openings or louvered openings 26 therein. There is also provided a centrally located opening 21 through which extends a damper handle 28 formed with teeth 29 upon its underside and a knob 30 or the like at its outer end and the inner end of the handle 28 is pivotally connected to an ear 3| mounted centrally upon the lower side of the damper 20. The sides of the damper 20 are faced with felt or the like, as indicated at 32.
An exterior window consisting of a pane 33 and sash 34 is mounted vertically between the top l0, sides H and I2 and base member [4 at the 3 i, outer side thereof and an interior window consisting of a pane and sash 36 is likewise mounted at the inner side of the device.
One end of the guide slat 4| has affixed thereto an angularly extending arm 45 to the outer end of which is aiiixed a cable 45 which extends through a flexible cable housing 41 downwardly through a metal cover 48 mounted upon the base 14 and thence through a passage 49 formed in the base and terminating in an operating button or handle 50 at the interior side of the base I4. In a recess formed in the upper side of the base 14 there is provided a metal frame 5| in which is revolubly mounted a shaft 52 upon is affixed a pair of spools 53 and 54. Cords 55 and 56 are wound upon the spools 53 and 54, respectively, and extend over pulleys 51 and 58, respectively, mounted adjacent either end of the underside of the cover 48, and thence upwardly and over the pulleys 39 and thence downwardly through the bottom guide slat 43 and terminating in knots 59.
The shaft 52 extends through the interior wall of the base l4 and terminates in a handle 69.
In operation, it will be apparent that air may be admitted through the passageway [5 in any desired quantity by manipulating the handle 28 in such manner that a desired tooth 29 may engage with the lower edge of the opening 21 and thus changing the effective angle of the damper '20 to allow more or less air thereby. Also, when it is desired to close the passageway to the travel of air therethrough, the handle is pulled inwardly until it abuts the felt facings 22 and 24 of the stop members 2! and 23, respectively. The louvers I! prevent rain or snow from entering the passageway and the filter screen [8 will keep out dust and insects, while the perforated panel 25 will allow for an. even flow of air into 7 the interior of the building in which the device is utilized.
To tilt the Venetian blind in conventional manner, it is only necessary to move the cable 46 in or out by means of the button 50 thereby moving the arm 45 and hence the guide slat 4| which will, in turn, move all other slats through the interconnecting webs or tapes 44.
To raise or lower the Venetian blind, it is only necessary to revolve the handle 50 thereby moving the cords 55 and 55 onto or off of the spools 53 and 54 thus moving the bottom guide slat 43 upwardly or downwardly depending on the direction of rotation of the handle 50. A spring 6| interconnects the ear 3! and an eye 62 adjacent the inner edge of the bottom member [3 to normally urge the damper 20 to closed position. The felt facings 32 on the sides of the damper provide a means for frictionally holding the damper in selected positions and also acts as insulation.
While but two forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame, inner and outer windows in the frame, a Venetian blind suspended from the top of the frame between said windows, remotely controlled means for adjusting the angular relation of the slats of the blind and remotely controlled means for raising and lowering the blind, said last named means comprising a shaft transversely mounted in the base of said frame, a pair of spools affixed to the shaft, cords interconnect ing each of these spools and the lowermost slat in the blind, pulleys for guiding the cords and a handle at the intermost end of the shaft.

A device of the character described comprising a frame, inner and outer windows in the frame, a Venetian blind suspended from the top of the frame between said windows, remotely controlled means for adjusting the angular relation of the slats of the blind and remotely controlled means for raising and lowering the blind, said last named means comprising a shaft transversely mounted in the base of said frame, a pair of spools affixed to the shaft, cords interconnecting each of these spools and the lowermost slat in the blind, pulleys for guiding the cords and a handle at the intermost end of the shaft, said means for remotely controlling the angular adjustment of the'slats of the blind comprising an arm carried by one of the slats, a cable connected at one end with the arm and extending through the frame and having an operating button at its outer end.
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, inner and outer windows in the frame, a Venetian blind suspended from the top of the frame between said windows, remotely controlled means for adjusting the angular relation of the slats of the blind and remotely controlled means for raising and lowering the blind, said last named means comprising a shaft transversely mounted in the base of said frame, a pair of spools afiixed to the shaft, cords interconnecting each of these spools and the lowermost slat in the blind, pulleys for guiding the cords and a handle at the intermost end of the shaft, said means for raising and lowering the blind comprising a shaft, transversely mounted in the frame, pulleys for guiding the cords, said handle being operative for turning the spools and actuating the cords.
