The invention relates to hinges generally and more particularly to a hinge structure for mounting the doors of cookstove ovens. The present application is a continuation in part of my prior application Serial No. 650,768, filed February 28, 1946, now abandoned.
One object of the invention is to' provide a hinge structure of the above general character which is easy to install and adjust and which permits the oven door to be quickly and conveniently removed or replaced.
Another object is to provide an improved hinge structure for cookstove oven doors which may be permanently mounted on a door before the door is installed in the stove and which is adapted to coact with simple fastening devices incorporated in the stove body to support the door removably thereon.
A further object is to provide a hinge structure for oven doors which is readily adjustable after the door is mounted on the stove to provide the necessary clearance for proper operation of the door and thus compensate for variations in the manufacture and assembly of the parts.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

While the invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiments, but it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the specific forms disclosed, but intend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
For purposes of illustration the improved hinge structure has been shown as installed in a conventional gas cookstove l0 having an oven H with a rectangular door opening defined by a rigid frame I2. The oven opening is adapted to be closed by a flush type door l3, herein shown as comprising an outer sheet metal shell [4 and an inner sheet metal liner [5 spaced apart to provide for the installation of the usual heat insulating material. In the exemplary door, the liner is shaped to provide a shallow reces around the marginal edge portion of the door adapted to abut against the face of the frame l2, the outer shell [4 of the door being disposed substantially flush with the front panel N5 of the stove when the door is closed.
The improved hinge structure constituting the present invention includes a pair of hinge mechanisms adapted to be permanently secured to the door 13 before it is installed in the stove and capable of being removably mounted on the door frame in a very simple and convenient manner. More particularly, each mechanism comprises two members, pivotally connected together, one adapted to be secured to the door and the other adapted to be removably secured to the door frame and providing a stationary support upon which th first member may pivot as the door is swung between open and closed positions. For mounting the stationary member, the door frame is provided with a pair of connecting elements which are installed when the stove is assembled to project inwardly from the door frame so that the stationary members may be associated therewith by a simple hooking action.
In the frame disclosed in Figs. 1-6 of the drawings, the hinge mechanisms 20 are arranged to cooperate with connecting elements in the form of studs 2| projecting inwardly from the sides of the door frame. For mounting each door, two of the hinge mechanisms 20 are provided. While these mechanisms are generally alike in construction, they are made respectively in right and left hand styles for use at opposite sides of th door. Each mechanism 20 comprises a pair of hinge members preferably in the form of sheet metal stampings including a swinging member 22 (Figs. 2 and 4-6) adapted to be secured permanently to the door I3, and a stationary member 23 to which the member 22 is pivotally secured. The stationary member is adapted to be removably secured to the door frame |2 through coaction with the stud 2|, as will appear presently. Suitable spring means herein shown as va coiled spring 24 is arranged to cooperate withthe member 22 to counterbalance the weight of the door.
As will be seen by reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 of the drawings, the hinge member 22 comprises an elongated sheet metal strip dimensioned to fit between the outer shell may be permanently secured to the door liner in any suitable manner such as by spot welding. The other end of the member is offset rearwardly of the inner face of the door and is extended in the form of an arm 26 substantially beyond the loweredge ofv the door.

A- pivot pin28 connects the member 22 to the arm 21 at apoint closely adjacentthe front wall and the lower'edge of the door l3; theadjacentrecessedportion of the'member'bein'g. formed with amarcuate-surface 28 to provide clearance for the: edge of the'door in its opening and closing movements. As shown in Fig. 6, they tip portion of the arm 2'! is preferably offset laterally'a slight amount from the plane of the member 23 as; indicated at 29 to permit themember 22 to swing about the pivot pin 28'without rubbing on themember 23.
For. mounting the stationary member 23 on the" door frame; the member is provided atits upper end with a rearwardly projecting. arm 38 having a downwardly facingnotch 3| adapted toreceive thestud 2|. In the exemplary embodiment of thehinge structure; the stud" 2| is formed with a smooth rounded head 32 (Fig. 5), a square intermediate or shoulder portion 33 (Fig. 6) and an end portion of reduced diameter threaded for the reception of anut 34 (Fig. 5) bywhich the stud is rigidly attached to thedoor frame l2. The stud is mounted so-tha-t the square shoulder portion projects into the oven door opening and thethreaded end portion and nut 34' are located within the stove body. When the stove is completely assembled only the head 32 of the'Stud is exposed and since it is of smooth rounded form it does not lend itself to-manipulatin by means of a screw driver or an ordinary wrench; Inexperienced persons are accordingly discouraged from tampering. with the stud in attempting to remove-the door from the'stove.
Means is provided for holding the hinge member 23' against rotation relative to. the stud 2.| while permitting it to be engaged. or disengaged by" a. simple vertical sliding movement; Moreover, the holding means is constructedzso that it may be conveniently adjusted to locate the hinge axis of the door after installation of the door in. the stove. In the present instance, the holding means includes a clamping. element 35 in the form of a thin metal strip secured to the door frame I2 below the stud 2| by a bolt or screw 36;. The inner end of the element is offset to overlie a depending arm 31 formed on the l4 and liner l of the door and formed at its outer: end with a laterally bent lug 25 by which itmember 23 so as to positively limit outward movement of the arm. By tightening the screw 36 the arm may be securely clamped to the door frame.
To provide for changing the position of the stationary member 23 on the door frame to locate the hinge axis of the=door, a stop lug 38 is formed on the forward edge of the member intermediate the arms 21 and 31. In the manufacture of the hinge mechanism the lug 38 is made coplanar with the member 23 as shown in full lines in Fig. 6 and is adapted to be bent laterally as'shown in broken lines in that figure after-the door is'installed in the stove and the hinge axis properly located with respect to the doorv frame and associated parts of the stove. The lug, when bent, engages the front face of the-door frame and thus permanently maintains the hinge axis of the door in the position in which it was initially established. It willbe evident, of course, that the lug may be bent-at any point desired along its length to accommodate any reasonable adjustment of the. hinge axis'and. when so bent insures accurate location of the hinge member upon removal and replacement of the door.
To provide clearance for the lug. 38 the inner wall of. the front panel I6 of the stove maybe recessed (see Fig. 3) by striking out a section. adjacent the upper edge of the panel. Thispermits the lug to slide down alongthefacerof the door in the assembly of the hinge. mechanism with the door frame.
Novel means is provided for preventing. disengagement of the studsv 2.| from the hingemembersv 23 accidentally or through manipulation of the oven door by inexperienced persons. For this purpose the arm 26-of eachhinge member 22 is formedwith a rounded cam surface 40adapted when. the door isin a closed or substantially closed position to. extend under the open endof the slot 3| and. present an abutment to-the underside of thestud 2| therein. (see Fig. 2). Adjacent. the inner end of the arm, the-cam surface is terminated'in a.recess 4| located soas-to provide clearance for. the lug 2| when the door is-tilted at an .angleof approximately 15 to the. horizontaLasshowninFig. 4. In that position, the door and. assembled hinge mechanisms may be lifted suflicientlyto disengage the'hooked arm 30 from the stud 2| and thereafter the hinge member 23 can pivot forwardly to permit removal of the door" The operations are reversed in assembling the door with the stove, that is, the dooris held at the proper angle while the arm 30- is hooked over thestudand then shifted downwardly to engage the stud in the notch 3|. The construction of the clamping element 35 and the location of. the stop lug 38 permit such movements and yet hold the hinge member securely in placeiupon completion of the installation.
It may be noted that the recess 4| is further dimensioned to provide a stop surface engageable with the stud- 2 to holdthe door l3. in a horizontal position when fully opened. Production of the hinge structure is thus simplified by the elimination-of separate stop means;
The counterbalance spring in addition to counterbalancing the weight of the door |3 also acts to hold the hinge members 23 securely engaged with the studs 2|. During the assembly and disassembly operations, the spring 24 is therefore disengaged from the hinge member 22. As shown in Figs. 2' and 3 the spring is formed with a hook-like end 42 adapted to engage in an aperture 43in the hinge member. Preferably the portion of the hinge member adjacent the aperture is struck out as indicated at 44 to facilitate the engagement of the spring hook in the aperture. It will also be understood that the other end of the spring is suitably anchored to the stove frame in well known manner.
The modified form of the hinge structure shown in Figs. 7-9 includes right and left-hand hingemechanisms 50 adapted to be carried by the door 13 and particularly constructed for easy attachment to and removal from the door frame .of the stove.
Each mechanism 50 comprises a swinging member adapted to be secured to the .door l3 and, a stationary member 52 adapted to .be removably secured to the door frame l2 through coaction with a connecting element 53.
The hinge members 5| and 52 are secured together for pivotal movement by a pin 54 so that the door |3 may swing about a horizontal axis ,hinge member 5| comprises an elongated sheet metal stamping having its forward end portion shaped for attachment to the door |3 in the same manner as the member 22 heretofore described. 1 Theother end of the hinge member is extended rearwardly in the form of an arm 51 projecting substantially beyond the lower edge of the door and terminating in a hook-like stop engaging element 58.
The hinge member 52 likewise comprises a.
sheet metal stamping having an elongated body 59 with an arm 6|) projecting forwardly and downwardly from its upper end portion for attachment to the companion hinge member by means of the pivot pin 54. For cooperation with the connecting element 53 the hinge member 52 is additionally provided at its upper end with a rearwardly and downwardly projecting hook-like extension 5| having a transversely bent intermediate portion 52 terminating in a downwardly turned tip 63. At its lower end the hinge body 59 is formed with a rearwardly projecting finger 64.
The connecting element 53 as herein shown comprises an elongated sheet metal strip shaped to provide two laterally offset parallel flanges 65 andBB connected by a transverse web 61. The flange 65 is adapted to be mounted flush against the door frame and secured thereto in any suit- I able manner as by bolts 68 passing through the 1 flange adjacent the upper and lower ends of the element.
" flange 66 is spaced inwardly from the frame and With the element thus mounted the coacts therewith to define an upright forwardly opening channel for the reception of the body portion 59 of the hinge member 52. A boss 76 fstruck inwardly from the flange 66 substantially at its mid-point engages the door frame to insure proper spacing of the flange from the frame.
The hook portion 6| of the hinge member below the lower end of the element 53 and it thus constitutes an abutment normally effective to re- 1 strain the hinge member against movement in a y direction to disengage the hook portion from the connecting element. In the particular construction illustrated, the hinge body 59 has its rear edge recessed as at H to clear the boss 10. Adjacent its lower end the rear edge of the body is formed with a fiat portion 12 adapted to bear against the web 61 to retain the member and particularly the part supporting arm 60 in fixed relation to the door frame. When the parts are assembled in the above manner, the stationary hinge member 52 is securely connected with the stove frame and the entire hinge and door structure is supported thereon.
Attachment of the hinge structure to the stove is a very quick and simple operation. Thus when the door I3 is held at an angle to the horizontal with the body portion 59 of the stationary hinge member tilted with respect to the connecting element 53 as shown in Fig. 8, the hook element 6| may be engaged over the upper end of the connecting element by simple downward movement of the door and hinge structure. Following such engagement the hinge member 52 is rocked counterclockwise to enter the body 59 in the channel between the flange 66 and the adjacent portion of the door frame. The stop finger 64 is thereby located below the web 61 of the element and in a position to restrain upward movement of the hinge member relative to the element.
To remove the door from the stove it is only necessary to open it to the inclined position shown in Fig. 8, tilt the hinge member 52 clockwise to withdraw the finger 64 from below the connecting element, and then lift the entire structure from the stove. It will be appreciated, of course, that in installing or removing the door the counterbalance spring 55 is disengaged fromthe stud 56.
The laterally directed or transverse portion 52 of the hook element 6| is dimensioned to extend over the arm 51 of the movable hinge member 5| for engagement by the hook portion 58 thereof when the door I3 is in open position. transverse portion 62 thus serves as a limit stop for determining the open position of the door.
To provide for adjustment ofthe hinge structure so as to vary the location of the pivotal axis of the door as is sometimes necessary in the initial installation of a door or after it has been removed for repairs, the lower bolts 68 which secure the connecting elements 53 to the door frame may be inserted through a transverse slot 15 in the flanges B5 of the respective elements. Accordingly, when this lower bolt is loosened, the
elements may be rocked about the axes of the upper-bolts 68 to change the position of the connecting elements. As the bearing surfaces 12 of the stationary hinge members rest against the webs 61 of the connecting elements, such change in position of the elements correspondingly varies the position ofthe hinge members 52 and thereby determines the location of the pins 54 defining the pivotal axis of the door. After such adjust ment the lower bolts 68 may be tightened to lock the parts in adjusted position. v
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the invention provides a hinge structure of novel and advantageous construction particularly suitable for use with cookstove oven doors. The hinge structure is simple and rugged in construction. inexpensive to manufacture and'extremely easy to install. Moreover, it may be permanently secured to the oven door before th latter is installed in the stove. Installation is thereafter eifected quickly and easily by a simple sliding movement of the assembled door parts into and downwardly of the door frame. Removal of the door is equally simple, but such removal by inexperienced person or other tampering with the door and hinge mechanism is discouraged by the complete concealment of the cooperative parts by which the mounting of the door is effected.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a stove having an -oven, of a frame defining a door opening for the oven, a door for closing the opening, a hinge structure for supporting the door on said frame, said structure including a pair of studs mounted on and projecting inwardly from the sides of the door frame, clamping elements on each side of the frame below said studs, and a pair of hinge mechanisms each including a movable member secured to the door before assembly with the frame and a stationary member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to be removably secured to the door frame. a rearwardly projecting arm on said stationary member having a downwardly facing notch in its lower edge adapted to receive one of said studs for removably supporting the hinge mechanism on the door frame, means on said stationary member efigageable with the door frame to limit the range of movement of the member upon said stud, said last mentioned means being settable to initially locate the axis of the door with respect to the frame, and other means on said stationary member engageable by said clamping element for retaining the member in place.
2. The combination with a stove having an oven, of a frame defining a door opening for the oven, a door for closing the opening, a hinge structure for supporting the door on said frame, said structure comprising a pair of studs mounted on and projecting inwardly from the sides of the door frame, clamping elements on each side of the frame below said studs, and a pair of hinge mechanisms each including a movable member secured to the door before assembly with the frame and a stationary member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to be removably secured to the door frame, said stationary member having a notched arm adapted to be hooked over one of said studs to support the door and an extension adapted to coact with the associated clamping element to locate the member with respect to the frame, and spring means connected to the movable member of said mechanism to counterbalance the weight of the door.
3. In a cookstove having a door opening defined by a rigid frame, a hinge for mounting a door on the frame comprising, in combination,
a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a stationary hinge member pivotally connected to said movable hinge member, a stud rigid with the door frame and projecting into the door opening in the frame, a clamping element secured to the door frame below said stud,
'a rearwardly projecting extension on said stationary hinge member having a downwardly opening notch adapted to receive said stud, an arm rigid with said stationary hinge member engageable by said clamping element when said stud is engaged in said notch, and a lug on said arm projecting laterally over the outer face of the door frame, said lug and said clamping element cooperating to hold the hinge member against rotational movement relative to said stud while permitting upward movement of the member to disengage it from the stud.
4. In a cookstove having a door opening defined by a frame, a hinge for mounting a door on the frame comprising, in combination, a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a stationary hinge member pivotally connected to said movable hinge member, a stud rigid with the door frame and projecting into the door opening in the frame, a clamping element secured to the door frame below said stud, a rearwardly projecting extension on said stationary hinge member having a downwardly opening notch adapted to receive said stud, and a downwardly projecting extension on said stationary hinge member adapted to coact with said clamping element when said stud is engaged in said notch to position the hinge member relative to the door frame.
5. The combination with a door frame, of a door, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the door frame comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a stationary hinge member having a rearwardly projecting arm, means on the frame interengageable with said arm to support the member on the door frame, a forwardly and downwardly projecting arm on said stationary member pivotally connected with said movable member, the axis of said pivot being adjustable by rocking said second member about the means on the frame with which said rearwardly projecting arm is engaged, and a forwardly projecting lug formed on said stationary hinge member below and in spaced relation to said downwardly projecting arm, said lu being bendable to coact with the door frame and thereby hold the hinge members in adjusted positions in a front to rear direction.
6. The combination with a door frame, of a door, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the door frame comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a stationary hinge member having a rearwardly projecting arm, means on the frame adapted to be interengaged with said arm to support the stationary hinge member on the door frame, a forwardly and downwardly projecting arm on said stationary hinge member pivotally connected with said movable hinge member, the axis of said pivot being ad justable by shifting said stationary hinge member relative to the frame, and an element carried by the door frame cooperating with said stationary hinge member to hold the latter in a selected position of adjustment.
7. The combination with a door frame having an inwardly projecting connecting element fixed thereon, of a door, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame comprising an elongated hinge member rigidly secured at one end to the door and having its other end projecting beyond the lower edge of the door at the rear thereof, a second elongated hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member, said second hinge member having a hook-shaped extension adapted to coact with the connecting element on the door frame to removably secure the hinge to the frame, and biasing means acting on the projecting end of said first hinge member yieldably urging the door to a closed position, said biasing means also acting to hold said hook-shaped extension in engagement with the connecting element.
8. The combination with a door frame having an inwardly projecting connecting element fixed thereon, of a door, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame comprising an elongated hinge member rigidly secured at one end to the door and having its other end projecting beyond the lower edge of the door at the rear thereof, a second elongated hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member, said second hinge member having a hook-shaped extension adapted to coact with the connecting element on the door frame to removably secure the hinge to the frame, and a cam surface formed on said first hinge member adapted to cooperate with said extension to prevent disengagement of the extension from said connecting element when the door is open.
9. The combination with a door frame, of a door, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the door frame comprising a movable hinge member secured to the door, a stationary hinge member pivotally connected with said first member and adapted to be removably mounted on the door frame by downward movement of the member relative to the frame, said stationary member being removable from the frame by an upward movement relative thereto, and means on said movable member normally operative to positively restrain said stationary hinge member against upward movement, said means being rendered inoperative upon the positioning of the members in a predetermined angular relation.
10. The combination with a door frame having a rigid stud projecting inwardly at one side, of a door, a hinge structure for supporting said door on the frame comprising an elongated hinge member rigidly secured at one end to the door and having its other end projecting beyond the lower edge of the door at the rear thereof, a second elongated hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member, said second hinge member having a hook-shaped extension adapted to coact with the stud on the door frame to removably secure the hinge to the frame, the projecting end of said first hinge member being formed for engagement with said stud to limit the movement of the door to open position.
11. The combination with a frame defining an opening for an oven, of a door adapted to close the oven, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame including a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a, stationary hinge member pivotally supporting said movable hinge member, a hook-like extension formed on said stationary hinge member, a pair of studs mounted on the frame for engagement by said extension to secure the hinge structure to the frame, and stop means on said movable hinge members adapted to coact with said studs for limiting the opening movement of the door when mounted on the frame. 4
12. The combination with a door frame having a connecting element projecting inwardly at one side thereof, of a door, a hinge mechanism supporting said door on the frame comprising an elongated hinge member rigidly secured at one end to the door and having its other end projecting beyond the lower edge of the door, a second elongated hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member, said second hinge member having an extension, shaped to coact with the connecting element on the door frame for supporting and removably securing the hinge member to the frame, the projecting end of said first hinge member cooperating with the extension of said second hinge member to limit the movement of the door toward open position.
13. The combination with a door frame having a connecting element projecting inwardly at one side thereof, of a door, a hinge mechanism supporting said door on the frame comprising an elongated hinge member rigidly secured at one end to the door and having its other end projecting beyond the lower edge of the door, a second elongated hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member, said second hinge member having a rearwardly directed hook-like extension coacting with the connecting element to removably secure the hinge member to the frame. means on one of said hinge members normally engageable with said connecting element to prevent disengagement of said extension from the element, said one hinge member being tiltable to a position to render said last-mentioned means ineffective and thereby permit disengagement of the extension from the connecting element.
14. The combination with a frame defining an opening for an oven, of a door adapted to close the opening, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame including a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door, a stationary hinge member pivotally supporting said movable hinge member, a hook-like extension formed on said stationary hinge member, a pair of connecting elements mounted on the door frame at opposite sides of the opening and projecting into the opening, the hook-like extensions of the stationary hinge members engaging said elements to removably secure the hinge structure to the frame, and means on one of said hinge members presenting an abutment normally restricting movement of the hinge structure relative to the connecting elements in a direction to disengage said extensions from the connecting elements.
15. The combination with a frame defining an opening for an oven, of a door dimensioned to close the opening, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame including a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door and a stationary hinge member pivotally supporting the movable hinge member, connecting elements for removably supporting the stationary hinge members on the frame, each of said elements comprising an elongated metal strip having offset parallel flanges connected by a transverse web and each having one flange secured to the frame and the other spaced therefrom to define a substantially upright forwardly opening channel for the reception of one of the stationary hinge members, said stationary hinge members having a hook-like extension engageable with the transverse webs of the elements adjacent their upper ends to support the hinge members thereon, said stationary hinge members also having bearin portions engageable with the transverse webs adjacent the lower ends of said element to retain the hinge members in fixed relation to the connecting elements.
16. The combination with a frame defining an opening for an oven, of a door dimensioned to close the opening, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame including a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door and a stationary hinge member pivotally supporting the movable hinge member, a connecting element for removably securing each stationary hinge member to the frame comprising an elongated metal strip having oifset parallel flanges connected by a transverse web, saidconnecting element having one flange secured to the frame .and the other spaced therefrom to definea sub- :stantially upright forwardly opening channel for the reception of the stationary hinge member, a hook-like extension on said stationary hinge member engageable with said transverse web'adjacent the upper end of said element for supporting the hinge memberthereon, and-a finger projecting from said stationary hinge member en- ,gageable with said transverse web adjacent the lower end of said element for preventing move- .ment of the'hinge member in a direction to disengage said hook-like extension from the element.
17. The combination with a frame defining an opening-for an oven, of a door dimensioned to .close the opening, a hinge structure for mounting said door on the frame including a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each'of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member rigidly secured to the door and a stationary hinge member pivotally supporting the movable hinge member, a connecting element forremovably securing each stationary .hinge member to the frame comprising an elongated metal strip having offset parallel flanges connected by a transverse web, said element having one flange secured to the frame and the other spaced therefrom to define a substantially upright forwardly opening channel for the reception of the stationary hinge member, a hook-like extension projecting from the upper portion of said stationary hinge member for engagement with said transverse web adjacent the upper end of said element to support the hinge member thereon, the lower portion of said stationary hinge member being engageable with said transverse web adjacent the lower end of said element to'retain the hinged member in fixed relation to the element, said element being adjustable about a pivot adjacent its upper end to vary the position of said stationary hinge member.

The combination with a frame defining an opening for an oven, of a door dimensioned to close the opening, a hinge structure for mounting said door'on the frame including'a pair of hinge mechanisms disposed at opposite sides of the door, each of said mechanisms comprising a movable hinge member'rigidly secured to the door and a'stationary hinge member pivotally supporting the movable hinge member, a connecting element for removably securing each stationary hinge member to the frame comprising an elongated metal strip having offset parallel flanges connected by a transverse web, said ele- "ment having-one flange secured'to-the frame and the other spaced therefromto define a substantially upright forwardly opening channel for the reception of the stationary hinge member, a
.hook-like extension projecting from the upper portion of said stationary hinge member ,for engagementwith said transverse web adjacent the upper end of said element to support the hinge member thereon, and abutment means on the .lower portion of said stationary hinge member vengageable with said transverse web adjacent the lower end of said element to restrain the hinge member against movement in a directionto'disengage said extension from said web, said staframe and projecting into the door-opening, a
rearwardly'projecting hook-like extension'at the upper end of said stationary hinge member'engageable with said connecting element to support the hinge member thereon, and means 00: acting with the other end of said stationary hinge member for retaining it in fixed relation to the door frame, said retaining means being'adjustable to vary the position of said'stationary hinge member with respect to the door frame.
