CHAIN SAW DEPTH GAUGE Filed Aug. 9, 1950 IN V EN TOR.
latented Apr. 8, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENTYfOFFICE CHAIN SAW DEPTH GAUGE John M. Hanson, Sn, Alsea, Oreg.
Application August 9, 1950, Serial No. 178,365
The present invention relates to a chain saw depth gauge and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a saw tooth depth gauge having an elongated base generally rectangular in cross sectional areaand provided with an elongated centrally disposed slot in one end wherein is vertically pivoted upon a transversely extending hinge pin, a filing plate which extends downwardly and thence outwardly, the outwardly extending portion being bifurcated to receive therein a cutting blade of a saw. The bifurcated portion is of hardened steel and the operator utilizes the same as a rest for his file in filing the blade positioned therebetween. A thumb screw extends vertically through the body of the filing plate to impinge upon the bottom of the slot and one of such screws is provided upon either side of the hinge pin whereby the bifurcated portion aforesaid may be raised and lowered with respect to the body of the saw. An indicia bearing scale is provided upon the base and is adapted to coact with a marker upon the filing plate whereby the plate may be set to predetermine gauges.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manui'acture and yet effective and efiicient in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a compact portable device of the character set forth having a novel gauge forming a part of the invention.
A still further object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of a novel means for adjusting and looking a filing plate forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a base member forming a part of the invention, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a filing plate forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein an elongated base member 3 Claims. (01. 33-202) Hi whose top and bottom taper 2 I slightly inwardly throughout approximately one half of its length and which is provided with a milled slot I I which extends longitudinally from the narrower end of the body and longitudinally therethrouglr-for approximately three-quarters of the length of such body. A pair of opposed laterally extending openings 12 extend approximately centrally through the sides of the body l0 and communicate with the slots ll. v l
A filing plate I3 is provided with an elongated body portion l4 which is generally rectangular in cross sectional area and which is provided with a laterally extending opening IS in the rear portion thereof. A hinge pin I6 extends through the openings 12 and the opening IE to interconnect the body Ill with the filing plate l3.
Integrally connected with the body portion 14 of the plate I3 is a downwardly extending arm I I having an integrally formed outwardly extending bifurcated member I8.
Rearwardly of the transverse opening [5 in the body portion I4 there is provided a vertically extending opening I9 and rearwardly of the forward end of the body l4 there is provided a like vertically extending opening 20, the openings l9 and 20 being each threaded to receive respectively, thumb screws 2| and 22 whose lower ends are adapted to bear against the bottom of the roove II.
The thumb screw 22 is also provided with a locking screw 23. On one side of the arm I! there is provided a longitudinally extending marker 24 which is adapted to coact with a vertically extending scale 25 which is mounted upon the adjacent forward side of the body H].
In operation, it will be apparent that the device may be placed with its bottom resting upon a pair of saw teeth 26, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing, while the bifurcated portion l8 straddles a blade 21 to be filed. The bifurcated portion of the device, indicated at I8, is hardened so as to resist wear when a file is placed thereacross to file the outer edge of the blade 21 and it will be apparent that, in order to properly set the device, the locking screw 23 is first loosened after which the thumb screws 2| and 22 may be ma: nlpulated to pivot the body portion [4 of the filing plate 13 upon the hinge pin l6 and when the proper angle has been found by reading the scale 25 with the marker 24, the locking screw 23 may again be tightened to maintain the device in proper setting so that succeeding blades 21 may be filed identically with the aforementioned blade 21.
from the spirit of the invention or the scope of 5 the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body, a file plate pivotally c0nnectedto'said-body, means fo'r adjusting the 10 plate and "saidbody, "a bifurcated end portion for said file plate adapted to receive a saw tooth of a chain saw therebetween, said means including a groove in said body for the receptiohther'eino'f a portion of said plate; a pivot pin interconnect- 45 I and said body, and a thumb screw extending through saidplate upon either side of said pin ing said plate and said body, and atliii'mh'screw extending through said platenpon eithenside of said pin and each adapted to impinge upon the bottom of said groove.
2. A device of the character described com- 2 body and a'rharker upon'said plate adapted to coact {with said scale to indicate the degree *of angular relationship between the file plate 'and the bedy,--sa1d"means including a groovein said body for the reception therein of a portion ofs'aid 30 plate, a pivot pin'interconnecting said plate and saidbodyiand a thii'inb screw extending 5 through said plate upon either side of said pin and each adapted to impinge upon the bottom of said groove.
3. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body, a file plate pivotally connected to said body, means for adjusting the plate and said body, a bifurcated end portion for said file plate adapted to receive a saw tooth of a chain saw therebetween, a scale affixed to said body and a "marker upon said plate adapted to coact with said scale to indicate'the "degree of angular relationship between the file plate and *the body, said means including a groove in said body for the reception therein of a portion of said plate, a pivot pin interconnecting said plate and each adaptedto impinge upon the bottom of said 'g 'ro'o've, and said bifurcated portion being formed of hardened steel.
