ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 8, 1952 S PATENT OFFICE CARTON FOR- MAKiNG ICE-CREAM SANDWICHES Porter I. Henderson, Charlotte, N. o. Application January 7, 1950, Serial No. 137,340
1 This invention relates to a carton and more especially to a carton adapted to hold an ice cream sandwich or the like which comprises two wafers having ice cream filling or the like there between. It is an object of this invention to provide a carton having a rectangular sleeve portion open at both of its ends and having a substantially U-shaped slide member which has a base of'the same size as the area defined by the rectangular sleeve and provided at its ends with a pair of upstanding members of the same height as ,theside wallsof the rectangular sleeve and said upstanding members being of a width equalto the space between two wafers forming an ice creamsandwich. 7
It is still another object of this invention to provide a rectangular sleeve having a U-shaped member therein adapted to hold an ice cream.-
sandwich or the like within the rectangular sleeve whereby the U-shaped member may be pushed upwardly to eject the ice cream sandwich from thetop of the rectangular sleeve to permit the same to be eaten or to be removed from the rectangular sleeve and the U-shaped portion also serving to hold the wafer portions of the ice cream sandwich in spaced position within the carton while the-sandwich is being formed.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an exploded view of the improved carton showing the rectangular sleeve member in the center, the U-shaped slide member at the bottom and two wafers used in making a sandwich at the top;
Figure 2 'is a top plan view, of the assembled carton with two wafers disposed therein;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantial-ly along the line 3-3 in Figure 2;
- Figure l is'a vertical sectional view similar to 2 Claims. (011229-45) Figure 10 is aside elevation of still, another modified form of slide member disassociated from the carton. V
Referring more specifically to the drawings there will be observed a rectangular sleeve Jwhich is formed from a single piece of stock I I as by adhesive provided which has a base ll of substantially the A substantially U shaped slide member I6 is isame size as the area defined by the walls I2 thereof.
through l inclusive and provided with a pair of upstanding members l8 and 19 on each end The upstanding members 18 and I9 are of 'a smaller width than the width of the base l1 and consequently the edges of the base l1 extend beyond the edges of the upstanding members ll a'ndl8asat2l. 1
In the preferred form of this invention, the uppermost portion of each of the upstanding vmembers I8 and I9 is folded along score lines 22 and 23, respectively, to form tabs 25 and 26, re-
' spectively, at the uppermost portion of each of the upstanding members l8 and IS.
The sleeve In with the slide member 16 fitted therein is adapted to receive an ice cream sandwich which comprises a pair of wafers having ice cream filling 3| disposed therebetween. Now,
this carton is especially adapted to permitthe wafers 36 to be mounted in spaced relation in the carton so that the ice cream 3| in a semi-frozen Figure 3 but showing the carton with a completed filling there Figure-5 is a side elevation of the improved cream or other filling being placed between the Figure-6 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 66 in Figure 5;
Figure-'7 is a side elevation of a modified form of slide'lmember disassociated from the carton;
Figuife'B is a top plan view of the modified slide member shown in Figure 7;
FiguifeQ is a vertical sectional view of the modified slide member shown in Figure 7 and is taken along the line 9-9 in Figure 8;
condition may be poured into the carton between V the wafers 30 and then frozen to a solid condition. The tabs 25 and 26 of the upstanding members 18 and 19 cause the upstanding members l8 and I9 to be spaced slightly apart from the inner surface of the end walls 14 and -l5 of the sleeve Hi. The tabs 25 and 26 thus hold the upstanding members I8 and IQ of the slide member I6 in spaced relation to, the end walls 14 and I5 so that the-members l8 and! will hold the wafers 30 apart from each other prior to semi-frozen ice wafers 30. If desired, the stock forming the slide member I6 with the upstanding members l8 and i9 may be of a thickness suflicient to hold the "g6 wafers 30 in spaced position so that the tabs 25 and 26 may be eliminated.
Referring to Figures 7, 8 and 9, there will be observed a modified form of slide member indicated at which has a base 36 of substantially the same size as the area defined by the walls [2 through [5, inclusive, of the rectangular sleeve l8, and said base 36 also has upstanding members 31 and 38 on each end thereof.
The base 36 is slitted at each side thereof as at to permit the upstanding members 3! and 38 to be folded upwardly so that the outer surface of the lower portion of the upstanding members 31 and 38 will be disposed in spaced relation to the end walls of the sleeve. The front and rear edges of the base 36 are provided with upstanding side tabs 4| and 42, respectively. By referring to Figure 8 it will be observed that the upstanding members 3! and 38 are of a smaller width than the width of the base 36 to provide channels 43 between each edge of the upstanding members 31 and 38 and the proximate surfaces of the upstanding tabs 4! and 42. These channels 43 coincide with the channels between the side walls of the sleeve and the edges of the upstanding members 31 and 38.
Each of the upstanding members 3! and 38 is crimped along suitable score lines 44 and 45 to hold the upstanding members 3! and 38 further away from the end walls I 4 and I5 of' the sleeve member 10.
It is thus seen that suitable wafers may be placed in the sleeve l8 fitted with the modified form of slide member 35 so that the edges of the wafers will be disposed in the channels 43 and the wafers will be held in spaced relation to each other by the upstanding members 31 and 38 and the inner surfaces of the upstanding tabs 4| and 42 so that a suitable filling may be placed between the wafers to form a sandwich.
Referring to Figure 10 there will be observed still another form of slide member indicated at having a base 5| provided with an upstanding member 52 and 53 at each end thereof. The upstanding members 52 and 53 are of a greater vertical height than the end walls l4 and I5 of the sleeve 10 and are folded as at 55 and 56 to form top flaps 51 and 58, respectively, which overlap each other as at 68 when in folded position.
It will be observed that the blank forming the slide member 50 is of stock having a greater thickness than the stock in the other forms of slide members shown and that the blank is cut away as at GI and 62 at the front and rear of the base5l so that the width of the upstanding members 52 and 53 will be less than the width of the base member 5| and the edges of the upstanding members 52 and 53 will serve to hold a pair of wafers in spaced relation within a rectangular sleeve ID in a manner similar to the previous forms of the invention, to permit filling to be placed between the wafers to form a sandwich at which time the top flaps 51 and 58 may be folded to the position shown in Figure 10 to thus encase the sandwichwithin the carton and to provide a completely closed and sanitary package.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
