Description

A. A. MURPHY April 8, 1952 BARK HACK AND ATTACHMENT FOR HOLDING A SPRAY BOTTLE Filed Sept. 26, 1950 INVENTOR A. A.MU RPHY ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 8, 1952 2,591,716 BARK HACK AND ATTACHMENT FOR HOLDING A SPRAY BOTTLE Arthur A. Murphy, Palatka, Fla.; dedicated to the free use of the Peop United States Application September 26,
2 Claims.
V The invention herein described may be manuiactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes throughout the world, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
I hereby dedicate the invention herein described to the free use of the people in the territory of the United States to take efiect on the granting of a patent to me.
This invention relates to a bark hack of the type used in stripping bark from trees for the collection of oleoresin, and has among its objects the attachment thereto or a means for holding ina'convenient location a spray bottle containing a strong chemical used to spray the tree wound for artificial stimulation of the flow oi oleoresin, and holding the bottle in a manner such that it is maintained in an upright position while the hack is carried, spilling of the chemical on the hands or clothing of the user, and such that undue shock is not.
imparted to the bottle when the hack is used in stripping the bark.
In general, according to the invention, smut holder "for detachably carrying the spray,,bottle is pivotally attached to the handle of a bark hack provided with a handle and head. The arrangement is such that the center of gravity ,gofthe holder and carried bottle is so positioned relative to the pivotal attachment that the bottle is V maintainedby gravity in an upright position during carrying of the hack. Also, it is preferred to provide a brake member fixed to the bottle holder to pivot therewith, so that the operator 1 while using the hack may place his thumb on the brake member to prevent oscillation of the holder and carried bottle;
Desirably, the brake member includes a part made of resilient rubber which allows the bottle holder and carried bottle to oscillatethrough a small arc bydistortion of the rubber when the operator uses the hack for stripping bark. This removes shock from the bottle.
For a detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is a front view of the bark hack with the spray bottle attached to the handle;
Figure 2,is a side view of the hack with the spray bottle attached but showing only a portion of thehandle; 2
Figure 3 is a view looking downward on Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
The bark hack itself has a handle l and a hack head H of usual fQrm such as shown in Patent No. 2,434,869, for example. The spray bottle I5 is also of a usual type.
A bracket having a spindle 2] is rigidly attached to the handle, as by screws 22. The bottle holder 23 is pivotally supported on the 1c in the territory of the 1950, Serial No. 186,896
(Granted under thee-ct of March 3, 1883, as amended April so, 1928; 370 o. o. v57) thus to avoid accidental spindle, and a brake member 24 is mounted around the spindle and fixed to the holder to pivot, therewith, the holder and brake member i being held on the spindle {by nut 25 threaded on the spindle. Flange 26 on the brake member forms a convenient means for the operator to a check swinging of the holder by placing his thumb against the flange while using the hack.
The outer part of brake member 24 carrying flange 26 is made of resilient rubber and is fixed to the bottle holder 23 by tightly fitting over an inner metal sleeve 21 which is integrally attached to the holder. The operator presses the flange against the handle to prevent oscillation of the However, rubber member, the bottle holder isallowed to oscillate through a small are by distortion of the rubber, thus to remove the shock from the bottle when the operator uses the hack in stripping the bark from the tree.
The holder is provided with a seat 30 and railing 3| for receiving the bottom of the bottle and spring clip 32 for receiving the bottle neck, the spring clip being fastened to the holder by bolt 33.
The position of attachment of the holder to the spindle is such that the center of gravity of the holder and carried bottle keeps the bottle upright by gravity.
I claim:
1. A bark hack having a handle, a hack head, a bottle holder for detachably carrying a spray bottle pivotally attached to the handle with the ;center of gravity of the holder and held 'bottle'so 3;.
positioned relative to the pivotal attachment that the bottle is maintained in an upright position by carried bottle during use of the hack in stripping bark from a tree. I
2. A bark hack according to claim 1 characterized in that the brake member includes a part made of resilient rubber which allows the bottle holder and carried bottle to oscillate through a small are by distortion of the rubber, thus to re- 7 move shock from the bottle when the operator uses the hack.
