STEAM-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 259,136, dated June 6, 1882.
Y l Application filed March 11, 1882. (No model.)
To allwhom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, MAXCY R. HALL,of Fair Mount, in the county of Gordon and State of Georgia, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement ih Steam-Pumps, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and 'exact' description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement'in steam-pumps 5 and it consists in the structure and combination of elements 'hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved steampump;-and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views of modified forms of a double and a single acting pump, showing a different connection with the main piston-rod for operating the valve or valves of the pump.
The steam-pump is formed with the main water-cylinderA and the main steam cylinder B placed in alignment with each other and provided with pistons a and b, respectively,which are secured to the same rod, c. Alongside the water-cylinder A is placed a small cylinder, A', having supply orifices or pipes a' at or.
near its ends and a discharge-milice, a2, at a' pointrnidwaybetweenthesupply-orifices. The cylinder A' is provided with two pistons, d d', secured at a suitable intervalg apart upon the rod e, to form valves for the ports c' c2, which connect the ends of the main water-cylinder A with the interior of the cylinder A'.
Alongside the main steam-cylinder B, in alignment with cylinder A', is placed a small cylinder, B', which is provided with a single piston, 1)', secured to the rod c. The cylinderl B' is provided with a valve, m, which is cnnected'by arms m' m2 to pins n' n2, adapted to slide in suitable openings formed in the heads of cylinder B when the piston b is moved in turn against the inner ends of said pins. The rod eis made to extend through the ends of cylinder B', and is provided at its end with a longitudinal slot, in which is conned the upper end of astem, n, secured to the valveo of the main steam-cylinder.
The operation of the pump is as follows: When steam is admitted through the valve o 5o at the left-hand port, the piston b will move to the right, carrying with it the piston a of the water-cylinder A. This movement of the piston c will cause, the iluid or gas to enter through the left-hand supply-pipe a' and the port c to the cylinder A, and the cylinder A 5r;
will at the same time discharge through the port c2 and the discharge-orifice a2. This supply and discharge will continue until the piston b arrives at the right-hand end of its cylinder,when its contact with the pin n2 will force' 6o the pin out and cause it to shift the valve m so as to open the right-hand port of cylinder B. The piston b' will thus be forced to the left-hand end of its cylinder, and its rode will shift the pistons d d', so thatA the s'upply shall 65 b e admitted at the right-hand oritice c'. The same movement of the rod ewillshiftthe valvev o by means of the stem n and allow the steam to enter at the right-hand end ot' cylinder B to move the piston b to the opposite end there- 7o of, where it operates the pin n' and the valve m in the manner already indicated.
With this construction the operations of the main pistons and the valve mechanism are made interdependent upon each other, so that onecannot work without the other. The piston-rod c, through the medium of the piston b and the pins n' n2 and their connections, com-` municates the proper motion to the pistonvalves d d', and the rod c in turn, to which the 8o piston-valves are secured by means of its connection with the valve o, communicates the proper motion to the piston b and the rod c.
In Figs. 2 and 3 are shown modifications 0f the pump. Fig. 2 represents a double-acting 85 pump in which the supply-orilices a' are -'con'- nected by a' pipe, a3,`while the piston-valves d d' are connected to the rod c ot' the main piston a by a lever, 1', fulcrumed at or near the `center thereof, and connected to the rod e by 9o a jointed arm, r', at one end, and i having its opposite end inserted in a longitudinal slot in the rod c. With this construction the piston- I wish it to be understood thntI do notlimit myself to the means herein described for eon necting the rods of the main pistons and the piston-valves, since this may be done in various Ways so as to secure the desired interdependence of one upon the other.
Having thus described im y invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the water pistonvalves d r1', ot' the steameylinder B', placed alongside the main steam-cylinder, and the valve mf, adapted to be operated by the piston of the main steam-cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
