Application December 18, 1948, Serial No. 66,098 a Claims .1 (c1. 103--136) This invention relates to rotary pumps and the like of the type in which the rotor is eccentrically positioned in a housing, and in particular a pump having a blade or blades with cylindrical heads or flanges at the ends in which the blades are driven from one end by a flange on a driving shaft through cylindrical sockets in the flange in which the heads of the blades are positioned and with the heads on the opposite ends of the blades positioned in corresponding sockets in a traveling or floating flange, and wherein the blades are radially positioned by a freely rotating rotor journaled on a stub shaft eccentrically positioned in the housing and providing a permanentcrescentshaped area between the rotor and inner surface of the housing.
The purpose of this invention is to improve the efficiency of rotary pumps, compressors, engines, and the like, by eliminating the friction resulting from wiping contact of the edge of the blade with the inner peripheral surface of a surrounding chamber in which the rotor and blade is positioned, and also the binding between the side surface of the blade and adjacent side of a slot in which the blade is positioned in a rotor resulting from the said wiping contact between the blade and inner peripheral surface of the hous ing. The rotary pump of this invention is an improvement over the pump of my copending application filed June 16, 1948, with the Serial No. 33,407, and also over the pump of my prior Patout No. 2,443,994, in that the blade is positively driven and the blade carries the rotor around wherein the rotor functions only as a guide.
In the usual rotary pump or the like, blades are radially positioned in a rotor, and as the rotor travel around a cylinder the blades are squeezed into slots by sliding 0r wiping contact of the outer edges thereof with the inner pe- With this thought in mind this invention con templates an improved construction for rotary pumps, engines, compressors, and the like wherein the blade is driven and the blade pushes the rotor, and the operating instrumentalities are so positioned that the blade travels in a circle concentric with the inner peripheral surf-ace of the cylindrical pump chamber, and the eccentrically positioned rotor slides over the blade, instead of the blade sliding into a slot in the rotor.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide mounting and actuating means for blades in rotary pumps and the like wherein friction between the blades .and coacting parts will be substantially reduced.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary pump, or the like having a radially disposed blade in which the blade travels in a circle concentric with the cavity in which it is positioned and also concentric with the driving means, and in which the rotor is eccentrically positioned and functions as guide means for the blade, maintaining the blade in a radially disposed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary pump in which the driving force is applied through radially disposed blades wherein ripheral surface of the cylindrical chamber in which they travel, resulting in excessive wear between the edges of the blades and cylinder wall,
and also between the sides of the blades and surfaces of the slots in which the blades are held. Furthermore, in the usual type of rotary pump or engine the ends of the blades scrape against the the blades are provided with cylindrical heads at the ends which increase the area of the wearing surfaces and thereby extend the life of the working parts indefinitely.
\ Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary pump in which the blade assembly functions as a self-contained unit and a freely rotating rotor provides guiding means therefor and is rotated thereby. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved rotary pump in which the operating force is applied through the blades and wherein the blades travel in a circle concentric with the cylinder and driving shaft and are held radially disposed by an eccentrically positioned rotor, whichis of a simple and economical construction. With these and other obj ects and advantages in view the invention embodies a rotary pump, engine, compressor, or the like having a cylinder concentric with a driving shaft, with blades having cylindrical heads on the ends driven at oneend by thedriving. shaft through a flange and with the blades held radially by a rotor journaled on] an eccentrically' positioned stub shaft,' and 3 with the heads on the ends of the blades opposite to the driving shaft flange carried in sockets in a floating flange.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing a side elevation of the pump with the cover plate removed and with the blade shown in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the pump with part of the rotor shown in elevation.

Figure 4 is a view showing an end elevation of the driving shaft flange with a blade shown therein and with the intermediate flat part of the blade shown in section.

Figure 8 is a cross section through the rotor with a blade shown in a slot therein, the intermediate part of the section being taken at a point adjacent the side of the rotor in which the slot is positioned. a Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved rotary pump or engine of this in v'ention includes a pump housing l0 having a cy= lindrical peripheral wall and opposed end walls providing a cylindrical chamber II, the end walls being a bearing plate !2 at one end and a cover plate I3 at the other, a rotor i4, ablade l5,'a driving shaft with a flange l1 and a floating ring is.
The blade I 5 is flat, being rectangular-shape in cross section, and cylindrical heads l9 and '20 are provided at the ends. One edge of the blade is provided with a semi-circular recess 2| in which a liner or contacting strip 22 is positioned as shown in Figure l.
The head at one end of the blade is positioned in a cylindrical socket 23 in the flange ll of the driving shaft I6, and the head I9 at the opposite end of the blade is positioned in a cylindrical socket 24 in the floating ring 18. The
floating ring is journaled through a central open ing 25 on a hub 25 of the' cover plate l3, the
center of the hub being aligned with the axis of the driving shaft it which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 27 of a hub 28of the bearing-plate l2.- A stub shaft 29 is eccentrically mounted in the cover plate l3 and the rotor I4 is freely rotatable" on the stub shaft 29, whereby the rotor is free to be turned by the blade 15 which is positioned in a radially disposed slot 30 of the rotor.
The housing is provided with inlet and outlet connections 3| and 32, respectively, and the bear-: ing plate I2 is secured to the housing by bolts 33 while the cover plate is mounted on the housing the head 19 at the opposite'end, which is post tioned in the socket 24, carrying the ring It around, and as the blade travels'it pushes "the 4 rotor l4 around on the stub shaft 29. It will be noted that the blade travels in a circle concentric with the driving shaft with the liner 22 continuously engaging the inner peripheral surface of the chamber l I, and with the rotor sliding outwardly on the blade as the blade travels from the position shown in dot and dash lines in Figure 1 to the position shown in full lines with the pump operating in a clockwise direction. It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the wall of the housing concentric with the cylindrical chamber, a cylindrical flange on the inner end of said shaft rotating within the chamber in running clearance with the end wall in which the shaft is journaled, said flange having a cylindrical socket in the peripheral portion of the same open to the interior of the chamber, a disc journaled to rotate on the opposite end wall of the housing concentric with the cylindrical chamber and having a cylindrical socket in the peripheral portion of the same opposed to the cylindrical socket in said flange, a cylindrical rotor journaled on said opposite end wall eccentric to the cylindrical chamber, extending completely between said flange and disc and havin running clearance with the cylindrical portion of the peripheral wall between said inlet and outlet ports, said rotor having a, substantially radial slot in the periphery of the same and a blade slidingly engaged in said slot and in running engagement with the peripheral wall, said blade having enlarged cylindrical heads at opposite ends of the same rotatably seated in said cylindrical sockets in the flange and disc, respectively.

A rotary machine of the character disclosed comprising a housing havin opposed end walls and a cylindrical peripheral wall connecting the same and forming therewith a substantially cylindrical chamber, said peripheral wall having spaced inlet and outlet ports opening into said cylindrical chamber, a shaft journaled in one end wall of the housing concentric with the cylindrical chamber, a cylindrical flange on the inner end of said shaft rotating within the chambear in running clearance with the end wall in which the shaft is journaled, said flange having a cylindrical socket in the peripheral portion of the same open to the interior of the chamber, a disc journaled to rotate on the opposite end wall of the housing concentric with the cylindrical chamber and having a cylindrical socket in the peripheral portion of the same opposed to the cylindrical socket in said flange, a cylindrical rotor journaled on said opposite end wall eccentric to the cylindrical chamber, extending completely between said flange and disc and hav.
