Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HOPF, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA,
WHIP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters.Patent No. 259,Q21, dated June 6, 1882.
7 Application filed March 25 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK HOPF, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements in Whip Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l is a View of my whip-holder applied I to a buggy. Fig. 2 is-a modification of the same attached to the dash-board. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective of a portion of the rod 0 with its collar and the bearing D.
This invention consists in the combination, with a whip-socket, of a rockingbar, which is supported in suitable bearings and provided with a treadle on one end, and which is acted on by a spring that will operate to keep the socket in an upright position, or nearly so, as will be understood from the following descrip- .tion, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
Before describing one practical mode of carrying my invention into effect, I will state that my object is to so construct a whip-holder and apply it to the floor or to the dash-board of a vehicle that the person who is driving can cause the whip to strike the horse with more or less force by simply pressing his foot on a treadle, thereby leaving his hands free to properly handle the reins. I
A designates a Whip-socket, which may be constructed in any suitable manner adapted to receive the butt of a whip. The upper end of this tube is screw-threaded to receive a tubular nut, B, which will hold the whip securely in its place, and also serve as a guard against the whip being stolen. Alocking device may be applied to the upper end of the whip-socket. This socket A is rigidly secured to the upturned end of a rocking rod, (J, which has its hearings in two standards, D D, which may be rigidly secured to the front cross-sill of the floor of the buggy or other vehicle. The horizontal portion of the rocking-rod G has .a treadle, E, secured to it at its inner end, which may stand upright when the whip is held in a similar position.
Between the two standards D D a spring, F, is coiled around the rod 0, one end of which is rigidly secured to the standard D, and the other end is secured to a collet, G, which is keyed fast to the rod 0, near the inner end of the standard D. This collet G has a tooth, b, formed on it, which, by the recoil of the spring F, is held againsta shoulder, 0, formed on the inner end of the tubular bearing of the standard D. The socket Ais inclinedinwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, so that notwithstanding it may be arranged on one side of the vehicle the lash of the whip will strike the horse when the treadle is pressed forward by the foot. The spring F will return the whip to an upright position when the pressure of the foot is removed from the treadle.
It is obvious that my improved whip-holder may be applied in any convenient position on a vehicle, and by suitable 7 devices, equivalent to those above described, operated by the foot of the driver so as to cause the whip to strike the horse.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination, with a whip-socket, of a rocking rod, a pedal or treadle, and a spring, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2 The combination of a whip-socket, means for holding a whip therein, a rocking rod, having a treadle secured on one end, and a spring which will return the socketto its normal position after it is pressed forward to whip the horse, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a vibrating whipsoeket, of a pedal or treadle, and means for returning the socket to an upright position after it has been pressed forward, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HOPF.
Witnesses T. H. ALEXANDER, WM. B. KEYWORTH.
