UNITED VSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD BRK, OF SGHWNNINGEN, WRIEMBERG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO MATHEW MICOLINO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCKING-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,986, dated June 6, 1882. d Application filed January 21,1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be. it known that I, RICHARD BRK, of Schwenningen, Oberamt Rottweil, Wrtemberg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks ,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class ot' doorlocks-in which the bolt operated by the knob is also used for locking purposes, so as to 01)-,
1o viate the necessity for a separate lock and latch; and the invention consists ofy a guided and spring-actuated main holt operated in the usual manner by a double cam on the tubular knob-spindle, which4 cam engages a central 1:5 projection on the bolt, in combination with a second cam, which is applied toV an axiallyturning bolt in the spindle and thrown into line with a second projection on the main bolt by meansof a key that is inserted into a keyzo hole in the knob and adapted Ato engage the interior bolt of the spindle. The inner socketshaped end of the sliding main bolt carries a Xed semi-cylindrical shank, against which Y may be thrown a similar shank carried by an axially-turning latch, s o as to lock the main bolt when thrown into line with the shank at the rear end ofthe same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l, 2, and 3 represent inside views of my improved 3o door-lock with the bolt in diiierent' positions, parts being` broken away so as to show the dit'- l ferent operating mechanisms. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the lock on line wx,
Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an end view' of the knob.
Similar letters ot'reference indicate correspending parts.
l In the drawings, A represents the casing of my improved door-lock, and B the bolt of the same, which projects with its beveled front end 4o through the face-plate of the lock-easing, thev opposite end,B2, of the bolt being made socketshaped for the reception of a stron g spiral spring, E, by whichthe bolt is thrown to the outside ofthe casin g for closing the door. The
end portions of the bolt B are connected by arc-shaped intermediate pieces, B', which pass around the spindle of the knobs. The open middle portion ot' the bolt B B2 between the pieces B' B' has, in line with the holt B B2,
5o inwardly-extendingprojections a and d. The
projection a at the rear part ot' the bolt is acted upon by a double cam, b, keyed to the hollow knob-spindle C, for the purpose of opening the bolt in whatever direction the inner or outer knob, C', may be turned. The face of 55 the projection d is made concave, so as to be adapted to closely hug or ride the spindle C when withdrawing the bolt, but which is engaged by a segmental cam, D, keyed to a solid bolt, D', at the interior of the spindle (l. The 6o tubular spindle G is made ot' two sections, ot' which the outer section carries at its inner end, within the casing, a disk, b,while the inner section, carries the double cam b. The disk b' and cam b are rigidly connected by screw-bolts b2, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The'doublc cam b is recessed at its inner face, so as to provide between it and the disk b' a space of sufficient size for the turning of the cani D of the bolt D. The bolt D and cam D are turned by means 7o vof' a key, D2, which is inserted through a keyhole ofthe inner or outer door-knob, and which engages either end of bolt D', as shown clearly in Fig. 4. By turning the bolt D' by the key the cam D is thrown into line with the projection d of the bolt B, as shown in Fig. 3, a spring-catch, e, ofthe interior bolt, D', heilig thrown into socket-hole e' of the spindle C, and thus the main bolt B locked by the cam D. The locking-cam D'may-be thrown back clear 8o of the projection d from the outside or inside by means of the key I)2 whenever the door is desired to be opened.
In connection with-the lock is also used a ni ght-latch,E', which is turned around its axis 85 by a button at its outer end, the latch E' being arranged in line with and back ofthe rear end, B2, ot' the main bolt B. The latch E' is provided with a semi-cylindrical .inwardly-projectingshank,f, which enga-gesasimilar shank, 9o f', at the inside of the socket-shaped end portion BZ of the bolt B whenever the button ot the latch E' is turned so that the shank j' is in line with the shank f'. In this case the opening'ot the lock from the outside is pre- 95 vented. As in this improved lock the functions of the common locking-bolt operated by the knob-spindle are combined directly with a locking mechanism and a night-latch, it can be manufactured cheaper than the locks at pres- Ioo ent in use, requires less time for being applied to the door, and is operated with greater convenience, asa small key can be used therewith.
Having th us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. As an improvement in door-locks, the combination of a tubular spindle, C, having a recessed double ca111,b,and an interior axiallyturning bolt, D, having a cam, D, and also extending through the recessed double cam b, with a guided and spring-actuated main bolt, B, having arc-shaped middle pieces,B, and inwardly-extending projections a and d, which projections are engaged either by the double cam b or by cani D, according as the holt is to be withdrawn or locked, substantially as specified.
2. As an improvement in door-locks, the combination otl the guided and spring-actuated main bolt B, havin g a socketshaped rear part, B2, and au interior semicireular Shank,f', with an axially-turning latch, E', having a semicircular shank,f7 whereby the main bolt is locked when the shanks are thrown into line with each other, substantially as specified.
3. As an improvement in door-locks, the combination of a recessed double cam, an interior axially-turning bolt having a cam and extending through said recessed cam, and a guided and spring-actuated main bolt having arc-shaped middle pieces, inwardly-extending projections, socket-shaped rear part, and an interior scmicircular shank, with an axiallyturning latch having a semicircular shank adapted to lock the main bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony that Iclaiui the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
