INVENTOR. Bessie Jme Auer Patented Mar. 18, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CRIB SHEET WITH A PAJ AMA BACK Bessie Jane Auer, ()ssining, N. Y.
Application July 25, 1950, Serial No. 175,798 r n 4 Claims. (01. 269.5)
This invention relates to a sleeping garment for infants and more specifically to a garment comprising the combination of a pajama or night- 'gown and a top crib sheet.
It is an object of the invention to provide a combination infants sleeping garment and top crib sheet which will provide complete covering protection at all times regardless of the position which the infant may assume in a crib and, at the same time, will permit the infant full freedom of movement for twisting and turning.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a combination garment in accordance with the above object which will permit easy accessibility to the infant atall times.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a combination garment in accordance with both of the above objects which is simple to manufacture and, accordingly, may be made available at a reasonable cost.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a combination garment and top crib sheet which may be used with equal ease whether the infant sleeps face up or face down.
Other advantages of the invention will appear from the following detailed description of one embodiment thereof, and from the accompanying drawing.
With these objects in view, a combination garment according to the invention comprises two layers of material, one of which is formed in the general outline of a sleeping garment such as a pajama or nightgown, and the other of which is formed as a top crib sheet. The upper portion of the pajama or gown layer is folded back on itself and stitched to form sleeves, the remainder of the layer being stitched, or otherwise adapted to be fastened, about its outer edges to the crib layer. The fold whereby the garment sleeves are formed, is cut at its mid-point to provide an opening for the infants head. The garment layer is also provided with a lengthwise opening extending between the neck opening and the bottom of that layer. Suitable fastening devices such as snap fasteners are provided along the lengthwise opening whereby the same may be held closed.
For a more specific and detailed description of the combination garment according to the invention, reference may be had to the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the combination garment as applied when the infant is to be placed in its crib on its back;
shows the assembled relationship between the crib sheet layer In and the formed sleeping garment layer generally designated at H. In the illustration, the sleeping garment layer is shown formed in the outline of a pajama although it will be understood that the outline of the garment may be formed as a gown without depart:- ing from the scope of the invention.
The garment layer I I may be cut from a sepa-'- rate piece of material or it may be cut from an elongated piece of material sufficient to include the crib sheet layer, this latter arrangement being described in detail hereinafter. The upper portion of the garment layer generally designated at [2 (Fig. 2) is folded back on itself as indicated at l3 to form the sleeves I 4. Tie strings l5 may be used to close th wrist open ings. The remainder of the garment layer is stitched or otherwise secured about its outer edges to the crib sheet layer 10 as indicated by the dashed lines l6. At the mid-point of vthe fold line l3, a generally circular opening I1 is provided for the infant's head. The garment layer also is slit lengthwise as shown at [8 from the head opening I! to or near the bottom of the layer. Suitable closure means such as snap fasteners may be arranged along the edges of slit l8 whereby the same may be held closed about the infants body. 7
In Figure 3, apattern is shown whereby the combination garment according to the invention may be cut from a single elongated piece of material and, accordingly, a savings in manufacturing costs may be obtained. In this arrangement, the garment layer H is permanently attached to the top edge of the crib layer It], the
upper portion l2 of the former in the assembly of the garment, being folded back on itself along the fold line IS. The sleeves I4 are formed by stitching together the edges l4. A means of reinforcing the joinder of the sleeves and the body portion of garment layer II to the crib sheet layer l9 may be provided by a strip I9 cut from the material as an integral portion of the garment layer H. In the assembly of the garment the strip I9 is stitched to and becomes a part of the underside of the upper edge of the crib sheet ID as shown in Fig. 2.
In the use of the combination garment according to this invention, the crib sheet layer is placed on the crib with the garment layer on top.
The slit I8 of the garment layer II is unfastened to, enable the placing of the infant through the same on the crib sheet layer 10. If the child generally sleeps face down, then it is placed face up within the opening. If it normally sleeps face up, the child is placed face down within the opening. In either case, the childs head is put through' the opening I! and its arms are put through the sleeves M which may be, in turn, secured about its wrists by means of drawstrings I5. The slit [8 is refastened and the. child turned over. This latter act places the garment layer on the bottom with the crib sheet layeron top. Since the crib sheet layer is not fastened or secured to the crib by pinning, tucking or other means, the infant is free to roll, turn over, or even get up and walk around the bed? Also, since the child is between the garment layer and the crib sheet layer, it is unable to become exposed or uncovered at any time.
It ispointed out also that the outline of the garmentlayer preferably should be made of sufficient size to accommodate the dressing ofthe infan-t in its regular cold weather sleeping apparel during'th'e colder months of the year.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim 'isz 1:. A combination infants sleeping garment and 9 a top crib sheet comprising, two layers of material. adapted: to receive the body of. an. infant therebetweeii, the-first layer being of generally rectangular shape, the second layer having a lower portion with the configuration of the body "a-ridapedal extremities of a sleeping garment and an upper portion forming sleeves and having intermediate the sleeves a top openin adapted to receive" an infants head therethrough, the said "lower portion being afiixed about its periphery centrally of the said first layer and extending "downwardly'from the top edge thereof.
2. Acombin'ation infants sleeping garment and 'a top'crib' sheet according to claim 1 in which said upper portion of the second layer is folded back on i'tself alonga horizontal line through the infants head-receiving opening therein and has adjacent edges secured together to form said sleeves.
3. A combination infants sleeping garment and a top crib sheet according to claim 1, including also means whereby an infant may be placed be tween the said layers, said means including a second opening having releasable fastening means attached to the sides thereof, and extending downwardly and centrally in said second layer, the second opening beginning at the said head receiving opening.
4. A combination infants sleeping garment and top crib sheet comprising two layers of material adapted to receive the body of an infant therebetween and in which the two layers are obtained from a single length of material folded back on itself, the single length of material including, in sequence when fully extended, a rectangularly shaped crib sheet section, a quadrangularly shaped section having an opening at the center thereof adapted to receive an infants head therethrough, said quadrangularly shaped section being of substantially less width than said crib sheet section, and a third-section having the configuration of the body-and pedal extremities of a sleeping garment, said body shapedportion of the third section being adjacent to the quadrangularly shaped section, the said material being folded back on itself along a line cross-wise of the length thereof through the infants-head receiving opening in the quadrangularly shaped section, the said third'section being afiixed about its periphery centrally of the. cribv sheetsection and extending, downwardly from the edgethereof adjacent th'e quadr'angularly shaped-section.
