Application February-23, 1950,;SerialNo. 145,841,.
3 Claims. (01. 2472.5)'
This invention relates devices for holdin I bedclothes in position on a bed.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to hold the opposite sides of blankets, sheets, coverlets and the like in position on a bed and in a manner such that the bedclothes are not likely to be thrown 01f inadvertently while the bed is being occupied by a person.
Another object is to provide a device of the type described which is adjustable so that it may be used with a bed of any size and which is especially useful in connection with a childs bed, the device when thus used preventing the bedcovers from being thrown off inadvertently by a child when the latter is occupying the bed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bedclothes holder comprising extensible means adapted to be positioned underneath the mattress of a bed on which bedclothes are arranged, the extensible means, at the opposite ends thereof, carrying holding means for holding or gripping the opposite sides of said bedclothes to prevent the latter from being thrown off of the bed inadvertently,
A further object is to provide a bedclothes holder which comprises extensible means adapted to be positioned transversely underneath the mattress of a bed on which bedclothes are arranged, the extensible means, at the opposite ends thereof, carrying holding means for holding or grippingthe opposite sides of the bedclothes to prevent the latter from being thrown off of the bed inadvertently, the extensible means also carrying means for maintaining the extensible means in a predetermined extended condition.
Numerous other objects and advantages will appear throughout the progress of the specification which follows.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a selected embodiment of the invention and the views therein are as follows:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device per se, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device applied in position on a bed.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the device includes a rod I of metal or other suitable material terminating at one end in a loop 2 and terminating at the other end in a loop 3. The device also includes a second rod 4 identical with and arranged parallel to the rod I, and rod 4 terminating at one end in a loop 5 and terminating at the other end in a loop 6. The lo p 2 on rod I is bent angularly thereto and encircles the rod 4, and the loop 5 on rod 4 is bent angularly thereto and encirclesthe rod I so that either of spring steel or other springy metal bent to provide contacting jaws 8, 8. The lower end of each clamp member I is coiled as at 9 to provide spring pressure for maintaining the jaws 8, 3 in clamping position. The coil 9 forms an eye In which receives the loops 3 or 6.
Either the rod I or the rod 4 may be provided with a collar I0 having a set screw II to limit the expanding movement of the rod I with respect to the rod 4.. By positioning the collar IQ along one of the rods, the device is adjustable for narrow or wide beds. The rods I and 4 are adapted to be applied in position underneath the mattress I2 of a bed I3, with the loops 3 and 6 protruding out from beneath the mattress so that the jaws 8, 8 of the clamping members 'I may grasp the opposite sides of the bed sheets, blankets or quilts so as to hold these bedclothes in position on the bed (see Fig. 2). Caps IA of rubber or other suitable material may be mounted on the free ends of the metal forming each clamp member I to prevent the bedclothes from being torn or ripped by these free ends.
Although only one device such as that described herein is ordinarily necessary for holding bedclothes in position on a bed, it may be desirable in certain instances to utilize more than one of these devices on a bed, as, for example, on a childs bed. A child often moves around quite frequently on a bed while he or she is sleeping, and thus the bedcovers are thrown off more often by children than most adults. Accordingly, one device may be positioned near the head of the bed and a second device may be positioned near the foot of the bed to insure that an active child or adult will not disarrange or throw off the covers while the child or adult is sleeping or resting.
Thdevice of the invention is extremely simany of its attendant advantages, and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fall fairly within the scope of the followin claims.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A bedclothes holder comprising a pair of parallel rods, each of said rods terminating at its opposite ends in loops, one loop of each rod loosely encircling the other rod to permit one rod to be shifted in directions substantially parallel to the other rod whereby the over-all length of said rods may be adjusted, a clamp member carried by the other loop of each rod,
each clamp member including a pair of opposed jaws and means for normally maintaining said jaws in clamping position, said rods adapted to be positioned transversely under the mattress of a bed and extended to a length such that said clamp members are disposed outwardly of the opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the jaws of each clamp member may be spread manually and then released to clamp therebetween a part of at least one article of bedcovering to hold the latter in proper position on a bed.
2. A bedclothes holder comprising a pair of parallel rods, each of said rods terminating at its opposite ends in loops, one loop of each rod loosely encircling the other rod to permit one rod to be shifted in direction substantially parallel to the other rod whereby the over-all length of said rods may be adjusted, a clamp member carried by the other loop of each rod, each clamp member including a pair of opposed jaws andspring means for normally maintaining said jaws in clamping position, said rods adapted to be positioned transversely under the mattress of a bed and extended to a length such that said clamp members are disposed outwardly of the opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the jaws of each clamp member may be spread manually and then released to clamp 4 therebetween a part of at least one article of bedcovering to hold the latter in proper position on a bed.
3. A bedclothes holder comprising a pair of parallel rods, each of said rods terminating at its opposite ends in loops, one loop of each rod loosely encircling the other rod to permit one each clamp-member including a pair of opposed jaws and means for normally maintaining said jaws in clamping position, said rods adapted to be positioned transversely under the mattress of a bed-and extended to a length such that said clamp members are disposed outwardly of the opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the jaws of each clamp member may be spread manually and then released to clamp therebetween a part of at least one article of bedcovering to hold the latter in proper position on a bed.
