UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHIO WOODEN WARE MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OHIO.
OF CLEVELAND,
WASH-BOARD PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION fOrmng part of Letters Patent N0. 258,904, dated June 6, 1882. Application lcd October 19. 1881. (No model.)
lTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL H. FARNS- WORTH, of Brooklyn Village, in the county of Cuyahoga and Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Wash-Board Protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
The nature of this invention relatesto wash- Io board protectors; and it consists in connecting with an ordinary wash-board a semi-cylindrical or curved protector, provided with rnetallic or wood ends, in which is a curved slot, through which passes into the sides a pin or r 5 stud. The protector rolls or slides upon this stud, and is retained in place thereby'7 when either rolled out for use or turned back into the wash-board.
This improvement is susceptible of various zo modifications without departing from the nature of the invention.
That others may more fully understand the construction and'operation of the said Yinvention, reference will be had to the following 2 5 specification, and to the annexed drawings,
making part of the same.
Figure 1 is a plan View, showing'the protector in place in a wash-board. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section in the direction of theline 3o x x, Fig. 1. i Fig. 3 is a view of the protector detached from the-wash-board.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
A is a wash-board, which may beconstructed in Jthe ordinary manner, and to which is connected the improved adjustable protector B. This protector maybe of wood or sheet metal, Zinc being the preferred metal. The ends of the protector may be of metal, and nailed or 4o otherwise secured to the wooden curved part thereof, and the metal ends may beformed with a flange to lap over the outside of the protector. In the end pieces, C C, are curved slots a, Figs. 2, 3, through which pass pins D into the sides E E of the wash-board, as seen in Fig. l. These pins hold the protector in position either for use or packing up for transportation.
The protector, by means of the curved slots a a and the pins DD, may he made to slide or be rolled out from the position indicated at c c to that of c', Fig. 2. When'it is extended it is ready for use, and when rolled or turned back to c o it is ready for packing, one washboard upon another, so 'as to take up but little room, for transportation. y
Instead of the slots a being in the end piece, they may be in the sides of the frame, the studs D -D extending from the ends of the protector into the said slots, which would be essentially the same as the arrangement herein shown, and preferred for the purpose designed.
The semicylindrical shape of the protector permits of its being easily attached to the wash-board and to slide between the side pieces thereof, to adjust it to protect the person using the board, and for sliding it down between the sides for the convenience of packing the washboardsfortransportation. Thefprotector, when drawn out for practical use, presents an exterior curved surface to the person using the board to lean upon, while the inner surface detlects andthrows back the splashing water into the tub. v
To retain the protector in the position indicated at c for use, the edge d is caused to drop or is forced into the groove c, Fig. 2, which extends across the back piece, F, and on raising the protector it is readily moved out of the groove, that it may be rolled back to within the frame of the wash-board, as indicated at c c, so that it is below or flush with it.
The rubbing-surface G ofthe board is or may be the same as in common use, and connected with the frame in the usual way.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1, 'A protector in combination with the upper part of a wash-board, and connecting devices between the side pieces thereof, arranged substantially as described, whereby the protector may slide between said sides, as and forthe purposes set forth.
2. A washboard provided with a. groove or notch, e, the connecting devices, consisting of a slot and tenon, and the protector, all in combination, and arranged to operate in the man ing packed for transportation7 substantially as lo ner substantially as described, and for the purset forth. pose set forth. In testimony whereof I atix my signature 3.
