Application October 20, 1949, Serial No. 122,544
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in slip covers of the ready-made type and has for its primary object to improve the construction of slip covers so that they will properly and neatly t articles of furniture of different sizes. Another important object of this invention is to provide automatically adjustable covers that will snugly conform to the curvature of various upholstered chairs of a general similarity. In this respect, while chairs or davenports of the same style are contoured similarly, there are size discrepancies. Thus, the primary aim of this invention is to provide means whereby covers will t smoothly and evenly on chairs and davenports, regardless of slight deviations in size.
Another important object of this invention is to provide means for easily securing the covers on articles of furniture, and automatic take-up means together with a iiap covering the foregoing means so that they do not detract from the appearance of the cover.
These and ancillary objects and structural features of merit are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a cover, embodying the principles of this invention, the cover being illustrated on a chair;
Figure 2 is a similar View with the flap in a raised position to expose the securing means and automatic adjusting means; and,
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the accompanying drawing, the slip cover I is constructed in a conventional manner with respect to the arm sections, front portion and side panels. The back portion I2 is formed in two sections I4 and I6, the sections having spaced, parallel vertical edges I8 and 20 to which knitted or woven elastic web sections 22 and 24 are secured by stitching 26. The cover IU includes a split bottom band Il having spaced ends I3 adjacent the edges I8 and 20 of the sections I4 and I6. The sections 22 and 24 are stretchable in the direction of their width and length and a slide fastener 28 is carried by the inner edges of the sections. so that the slide fastener is thereby operatively associated with the back sections to secure the cover on a chair.
It can thus be seen that the cover Il] has a split back section, the corresponding edges of the back having slide fastening connecting means, with the slide fastener secured to the edges by resilient fabric webbing or strips.
An elongated rectangular flap 30 is secured at its upper end to the upper edge of the back I2 of the cover and has its edges hemmed. The flap is adapted to overlie the webbingI or sections 22 and 24 and conceal said webbing, the slide fastener 28 and the spaced ends I3 of the bottom band I I.
However, since many other modifications and purposes of this invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon a perusal of the foregoing description, it is to be understood that certain changes in style, size and components may be eiected without a departure from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A furniture slip cover of flexible substantially inelastic material comprising a centrally split back panel including a pair of duplicate sections having spaced, parallel vertical edges, elastic webs stitched to said vertical edges, a slide fastener detachably connecting said webs for yieldingly connecting the sections, said cover including a split bottom band comprising spaced ends adjacent said vertical edges, and an elongated, iiexible ilap suspended from an upper portion of the slip cover for concealing the webs, the fastener and the spaced ends of said bottom band.
