Patented Mar. 4, 1952 2,587,827 MOVABLE BOX FOR STATIONERY Lester K. Fleischmann, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Standard Manifold Company, a corporation of Illinois Application November 2, 1949, Serial No. 125,090
7 Claims. 1 This invention relates to a supply container for zig-zag folded strips of stationery which may 'be'led into a Writing machine having a reciprocating carriage, and more particularly to a container which is movably mounted on a fixed base so as to accommodate itself to transverse movement of the writing machine.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact support for strips of zig-zag folded stationery in which the weight of the main pack of the stationery will be carried on a supporting base for such strips as are desired to be led directly into writing position. Heretofore, containers have been mounted on the typewriter carriage itself, but there have been objections to putting the added weight on the machine, because its inertia tends to slow up the operation of the typewriter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container which is antifrictionally mounted on its base, so that it may oscillate with respect to the base and acommodate itself to various positions of the typewriter carriage.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container having stops and guides which will enable the stationery to be withdrawn smoothly and without pulling out more than one fold at a time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container which may be set up on its base with an open side from which stationery may be withdrawn either from the front or the top. The unit is shown with a universal mounting, so that the container may swing horizontally and also tilt vertically.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the device, showing how the stationery may be led to the typewriter, shown brokenly; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the device set up for stationery withdrawal from the top of the container rather than the front; Fig. 3, a fragmentary sectional view through the box and supporting yoke; Fig. 4, a fragmentary sectional view, taken as indicated at line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a fragmentary sectional view, showing the device set upfor withdrawal of stationery from the front; Fig. 6, a fragmentary sectional view, taken as indicated at line 6-6 of Fig. and Fig. 7, a perspective view of the yoke.
In the embodiment illustrated, a supporting base 8 may be provided with a vertically adjustable telescoping pedestal 9, provided at its top shown in Fig. l.
with an antifriction bearing 10. A yoke H has a stud 12 adapted to fit into the bearing member ID and rest on a ball [3. If desired, ball bearings, not shown, may be provided around the stud [2. The stud is shown held against accidental withdrawal by means of a set screw l4 extending into a groove [5.
The yoke is provided with a pair of pointed set screws 16 which serve as pivotal support for the box ll. When the box is placed in the yoke so that the stationery may be withdrawn from the front, it may be desirable to prevent vertical tilting of the box with respect to the yoke, and for this purpose screws l8 may be turned into locking engagement with the box.
Preferably, the box is of light weight construction and is shown made of sheet aluminum, although a suitable plastic may be used. The box has one open side, andhas a perimentrical band l9 having a pair of opposed socket members 211 to receive the pointed screws I6, when it is desired to withdraw stationery from the front, as The band also has opposed socket members 2| which serve as bearings for the set screws when the device is set up for vertical withdrawal, as shown in Fig. 2.
The box is provided on its inner side Walls with two series of parallel slots 22 to slidably receive removable tray members 23. Each of the tray members is shown with its outer ends turned up to form a stop 24 whose end is rounded, as indicated at 25, to form a smooth guide for stationery being withdrawn from the tray. The trays form partitions which divide the box into a plurality of compartments to receive separate packs of stationery. The compartments are each provided with rollers 26, which are antifrictionally journalled in the walls of the box and facilitate withdrawal of a strip of stationery 21, as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably, each of the rollers is removable from the box by compressing one of its trunnions 28. Thus, if it is desired to put a large pack of zlg-zag folded stationery 21 into one of its compartments, the adjacent tray and rollers may be removed to provide additional space.
When it is desired to set the device up for removal of the stationery from the front, the device is set up as indicated in Fig. l, with the screws l8 arranged to prevent tilting of the box. The stationery strips 21 are then led from the compartment to the transversely shiftable carriage of the typewriter. indicated generally at 29.
As the carriage of the typewriter shifts back and forth, the box will oscillate about the base to best accommodate itself to the direction of travel of the stationery.
When there is room to set up the device hehind the typewriter desk, the arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 3 may be used. The looking screws l8 are withdrawn and the set screws l6 arranged to engage the sockets 2|. With this arrangement, the yoke is free to turn about the pivots l and also to tilt about the screws [6, so as to best accommodate itself to supplying stationery to the reciprocating carriage.
It has been 'found that either arrangement will permit the stationery to feed satisfactorily to the writing machine without tearing the station-- cry.
The foregoing detailed description is given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, for some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A supply container, for zig-zag folded strips of stationery led to'a writing machine having a reciprocating carriage, comprising: a supporting base provided at its upper end with a swivel; a yoke mounted on said swivel to oscillate horizontally; and an open top box pivotally mounted in said yoke'so as to oscillate vertically, said box being divided into compartments for separate packs of stationery, and horizontally disposed guide-rollers journalled in said compartments.
2. A supply container for zig-zag folded strips of stationery led to a writing machine having a reciprocating carriage, comprising: a box having an opening from which strips of stationery may be led to the reciprocating carriage of a writing machine; guides in said box for the strips of stationery; anda supporting base having a single anti-friction pivot member upon which the box is mounted for oscillation in response to the force exerted by the to and fro movement of the strips of stationery as the carriage is reciprocated.
.3. A device as specified in .claim 2, in which the .box has an open side and is divided into a plurality of compartments by removable tray-like partitions, each partition having at "its outer 4 edge a stop to restrain unfolding of the body of a pack of folded stationery.
4. A device as specified in claim 2, in which the box has an open side and is divided into a plurality of compartments by removable tray-like partitions, each partition having at its outer edge a stop to restrain unfolding of the body of a pack of folded stationery, and the guides include rollers journalled in the box adjacent said partitions, and the partitions have rounded edge portions beyond the stops on said partitions.
5. A device as specified in claim 2, in which a yoke is pivotally mounted on the pivot member for horizontal oscillation and the box is mounted in said yoke for pivotal movement at right angles to the axis of oscillation.
6. A device as specified in claim 2 in which the box is divided into a plurality of compartments by removable tray like partitions, and the guides include a plurality of removable guide rollers adjacent each partition.
7.. Adevice as specified in claim 2 in which the box is .divided into a plurality of compartments by partitions of sheet material which have their outer ends rolled to a semi-circular shape and doubled back at right angles to the plane of the partition, whereby each partition provides a stop member for a pack'of stationery on one side of the partition and a guide surface for a strip of stationery being withdrawn from either side of the partition.
