Application January 26, 1948, Serial No. 4,290
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in painters kit and more particularly to a carrying case constructed to provide a foldable easel and a collapsible canvas supporting bracket.
An important object of the invention is to provide a carrying case in which all of the necessary equipment of an artist for out-of-doors painting may be conveniently carried in a compact form and set up to provide an easel and an adjustable canvas supporting bracket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a painters kit of this character in which the canvas may be carried in a stretched position on the case while the case is being moved from place to place.
A still further object is to provide a canvas supporting bracket having a wide range of adjustment to accommodate canvases of various sizes.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the kit in folded position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View showing the kit in open position;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view in open position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 4 and showing the adjustable supporting brackets for the canvas; and
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention. The numeral 5 designates a carrying case generally and which comprises a rectangular shaped box 6 having a sliding drawer Ba therein for sliding movement inwardly and outwardly of the front edge of the box.
An upper cover 1 of inverted tray-like construction is pivoted at its front edge to the upper front edge of box 5 as shown at 8, the sides and rear edge of the cover overlapping the upstandin side and end walls 9 and 1B rising from the box -6.
The cover I is secured in an adjustably inclined position by means of a prop il pivoted to the underside of the cover and having its lower end adjustably engaging a toothed bar l2 secured to the top of box 6, the prop being foldable under the cover when the cover is lowered on top of the box. I
1 The upper surface of the cover 1 is formed with a longitudinally extending dove-tailed groove IS in which a lower dove-tailed canvas supporting bar I4 is slidably received, the bar It also having a dove-tailed channel [5 longitudinally thereof in its upper surface and in which an upper dovetailed bar [6 is slidably received for extensible adjustment of the bars 14 and IE on the cover 1 and also for vertical adjustment of the bars l4 and! 6 as a unit on the cover.
A channel-shaped lower canvas supporting bracket [7 is secured in a transverse position to the lower bar I 4 and an upper channel-shaped canvas supporting bracket I8 is secured to the upper bar I6 with the channels of the brackets l! and i8 opposed for receiving the upper and lower end of a canvas supporting frame I 9 therein to support the frame and canvas on the cover.
A lower trough-like cover 20 is pivoted at its front edge to the lower front edge of box 6 by suitable hinge member 2| for vertical swinging movement of the lower cover 20 against the underside of box 6, the side edges of the lower cover 20 likewise overlapping the downwardly extending side and rear end walls 22 and 23 at the underside of the box.
A pair of sockets 24 are provided at the inside of lower cover 20 at its free edge and in which the inner ends of legs 25 are slidably received and secured in adjusted position in the socket by set screws 26. Folda'ble braces 2'! connect the lower cover 20 to the lower side walls 22 to hold the cover and legs 25 in an open position for supporting the front of box 6.
A single rear leg 28 is slidable at its upper end in a socket 29 at the free edge of a substantially V-shaped yoke 30 which is pivoted at its upper end to the rear lower side walls 22. The leg 28 is secured in adjusted position in socket 29 by set screw 3| and the yoke 30 is also provided with a folding brace 32 connected to the lower side wall 22.
In the operation of the device the lower cover 2|) and rear yoke 30 are swung downwardly from the underside of box 6 and the legs 25 and 28 secured in vertically adjusted position to provide an easel on which the box 6 is supported.
The upper cover 1 is swung upwardly and supported in a desired inclined position by the prop II and the canvas supporting brackets l1 and I8 adjusted relative to each other to hold a canvas therebetween and to thus support the canvas in a desired position while painting the same.
The drawer 6a may contain the usual necessary artists equipment, such as a pallet, brushes. paint tubes and the like The upper cover 1 is folded downwardly upon the box by releasing the prop l l which is housed under the upper cover when in folded position and the canvas frame [9 may be carried in the brackets I! and I8, or removed therefrom, when the upper cover is folded downwardly on the box.
The legs 25 and 28 are retracted inwardly under the lower cover 20 and the yoke 30 respectively and the yoke 30 folded upwardly against the bottom of the box and the cover 20 likewise folded upwardly against the bottom of the box to enclose the yoke 30 and rear leg 28.
The drawer 6a is secured in its closed position by a pair of oppositely sliding key operated bolts 32 at the front end of the drawer engageable in upper and lower keepers 33 and 34 in the top and bottom of case 6. When the drawer is locked the handle 35 at the front of the drawer provides a carrying means for the case.
The sliding bars I4 and 16 of the canvas supporting brackets I1 and I8 are secured in adjusted position by set screws 36 and 3! at the under side of cover I, the cover having a slot 38 in which the set screw 31 for upper bar works.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A painters kit comprising a case having upper and lower walls, an upper cover hinged to said upper wall, an arm pivoted to the upper cover at substantially the center thereof, a toothed bar carried by the upper wall of said case for receiving the free end of said arm to retain said upper cover in a selected inclined position, means carried by said upper cover for supporting a canvas, a lower cover hinged to said bottom wall, a pair of legs adjustably supported on said lower cover, folding braces between said lower wall and said lower cover, a substantially V- shaped member pivoted at its ends to said lower wall, a rear leg adjustably supported on said V- shaped member, and a folding brace between said V-shaped member and said lower wall, said V- shaped member being foldable against the lower wall and said lower cover being foldable toward said lower wall and normally embracing said V-shaped member.
