DISSECTED TOY PICTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,651, dated May 30, 1882.

Application filed June 27, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known'that I, GEORGE H. IRELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden'and State of Massachusetts, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Dissected Toy Pictures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dissected toy piotures in which provision is made for such changes in certain sections thereof as very much alter the details of the picture, while its general characteristics are varied but little. Thus, taking a picture of this kind for the foundation subject, many difi'erent ideas may be expressed therein by'the substitution for sections of said picture of other sections bearing upon their face designs and parts of designs which, when introduced into the body of said picture, express one or several ideas notembodied in said foundation subject.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate dissected pictures constructed according to my invention; and the subject which I have chosen whereby to illustrate my improved construction is scenes upon the prairies of the West incident to the passage of an emigrant-train across them.

In both Figs. 1 and 2, the lower sections, Nos. 2, 3, and 4;, are identical in design; but the upper sections-viz, 5,6, 7,8, 9, and 10- are all difi'erent, as shown.

In Fig. 1 the emigrants wagon is represented as closely covered, section 5 of this figure com prising the upper portion of said wagon, orits cover, and a sky view beyond, while section 6 represents only plain and shy, and section 7 illustrates in addition to the latter the upper part ofa horse and his rider, showing thelatter in the character of an armed trapper.

In Fig. 2 all the characteristics of the lower sections of Fig. l are retained; but by substituting section 8 for section 5 the cover of said wagon is shown partly lifted on one side, disclosing to view the emigra-nts family within it, one of whom is seen endeavoring to drive away troublesome cats on said cover. The substitution ot'section 6 by section 9 introduces into the picture Indians on the plain, and by substituting section 10 for section 7 the rider upon the horse in the last-named section becomes changed from said armed trapper to an Indian, and the plain beyond, instead of being objectless, is seen occupied by an Indian tent and Indians and horses in various positions.

It will be seen that matched illustrations arranged upon the plan herein shown may be employed in dissected pictures, embodying an endless variety of subjects, such as ocean steamers under full sail, then sails furled and at rest, and next with the sides ofthe hull removed, showiu g the machinery and interior arrangement of the ship; and many other subjects may be usefully and interestingly illustrated by said dissected pictures, which provide for substitute sections representing additional or other devices, figures, or constructions. 7

\Vhatl claim as my invention is-- The combination, with-a dissected toy picture, of one or more substitute sections to be introduced into the said toy picture to convey something additional to the original dissected toy picture, substantially as set forth.
