This invention relates to a page end indicator for a typewriter, and more particularly to an attachment for a typewriter which is cooperatively engaged by the sheet of paper therein so as to give an audible signal'when the upper end of the paper is disengaged from the indicator.
Heretofore there has been no audible signal to indicate the end of the sheet with the result that unless the sheet is marked the margin at the lower end of the sheet is often lost or varies from sheet to sheet.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a page end indicator upon the typewriter in cooper-able relation with the sheet which moves therethrough and which is drawn by the rotatable feeding platen thereof so that an audible signal is given when the sheet disengages itself from said indicator.
It is the further object of the present invention to provide a simple, compact and inexpensive indicating device which is adapted for mounting and securing upon the typewriter and which is fully effective to give the operator a signal when it is time to change sheets.
These and otherobiects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a portion of a typewriter showing the sheet support and the rotatable feeding platen and with the present page end indicator secured thereon.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the above drawing ,illus trates merely the preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set'out.
Referring to the drawing a portion of the conventional typewriter is fragmentarily illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing and shows the sheet support II which is rearwardly and downwardly curved at I2 as shown in Fig. 2. The bracket l3 with similarly rearwardly curved portion i4 is slidably mounted upon the plate support ll-l2 and has an upright stop in the form of a plate 55 which is adapted to engage the left vertical edge of a sheet of paper to be directed into the machine and around .the platen It, said plate or stop being arranged at right angles to the pivotal axis 1 I of the saidplaten.
As shown in Fig. l the sheet of paper 18 indicated in dotted lines bears upon the sheet support I l and is adapted to be fed downwardly and around the under surface of the rotatable feeding platen [8 of the typewriter.
Elongated bracket [9 of U shape in cross section is inverted with its free ends positioned over the upper edge of the stop l5 and secured thereto by the set screws 20. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 a bell supporting arm 2! is formed with a reverse bent portion 22 which projects up into the interior of bracket l9 and is suitably secured thereto such as by welding. The arm 2| is formed and provided at its opposite end with a fiat portion 23 upon which is-secured the bell 24 as by the bolt and nut 25.
A resilient clip 26 also of transverse U shape in cross section is mounted in substantial alignment and adjacent the stop l5. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the upper portion at least of clip 26 is U-shaped with the inner wall thereof projected around the lower edge of one of the sides of bracket E9 in the manner illustrated particularly in Fig. i, and is suitably secured thereto such as by welding.
As shown in Fig. 2 the lower portion of clip 26 is preferably flat and bears against the upright edge of the bracket l9 extending downwardly and terminating adjacent its lower end in the page edge supporting plate 3'!) which is arranged at right angles to the plane of the elongated portion of bracket 26 as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1 and 2. The other edge of the clip 26 has a similar but smaller lateral projection 3! arranged at right angles to the clip 2%. Thus the projection 3| is in parallel spaced relation to the plate 30 defining an elongated slot 32 adapted to receive and retain the edge of the sheet of paper such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The clip 26 has an angularly arranged upwardly projecting arm 2! which terminates in the outwardly curved resilient portion 28 with a transverse rivet or clapper 29 at its outer end. When inoperative the resilient clip including members 3%, 3i, 2?, 28 and 29 will assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. However upon insertion of the sheet l8 within the typewriter by projecting the same upon the support I i and against the stop [5, the left edge of the sheet is efiective by its insertion within the slot 32, to maintain said resilient clip and arm 28 in the solid line position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the clip 26 together with the parts 2'! and 28 are highly resilient and freely flexible so that upon insertion of the sheet 18 the sheet itself may press the lower end of the clip to the solid line position shown in Fig. l, or on the other hand the lower end of said Clip may be manually so positioned until the sheet has been introduced through the slot 32 in said clip and is anchored by its extension under and around the rotatable platen l8.
Thus in operation while the sheet 18 is bein typed upon the sheet and the resilient clip 28-3fi-3l2l-28 will assume the relative position shown in Fig. 1 wherein it will be noted that the member 23 and the clapper or rivet 29 are spaced from the bell 24. However at the moment that the side edge of the sheet of paper leaves the lower end of the slot 32, the spring type clip will resiliently return to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 as will also the arm 28 to ring the bell 24.
The indicator is so constructed and arranged with respect to the platen that the edge of the sheet leaves the indicator at just the right moment to obtain a predetermined margin for the lower end of the typewritten sheet, provided the operator consistently observes the audible signal of the bell.
Furthermore the margin can be regulated by sliding adjustment of the bracket is upon the stop I 5 merely by loosening the set screw 20.
While the above described preferred embodiment of the invention illustrates a page end indicator for a mechanical typewriter it is contemplated that thepresent invention could also be adapted to an electrical typewriter which ineluded an electrically energized bell and with applicants paper edge responsive clip 26 being adapted to energize an electrical switch for the bell when the edge of the paper releases said clip permitting the same to return to a predetermined position.
Having described my invention reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope thereof.
I claim:
1. In a typewriter having a sheet support and a rotatable sheet feeding platen adjacent its lower end, a page end indicator comprising a bracket on said support, a bell mounted thereon, a resilient clip angularly depending from said bracket adjacent said support, a flexible arm on said clip normally engageable at its end with said bell, and guide means on said clip engageable by the side of a sheet for maintaining said clip under compression parallel to the side of said sheet while in engagement therewith, whereby as the sheet passes below said guide means under the control of said platen said clip resiliently returns to its initial position with said arm engaging said bell.
2. In a typewriter having a sheet support, a rotatable sheet feeding platen adjacent its lower end and a slide stop on said support arranged at right angles to said platen, a page end indicator comprising a bracket secured upon said stop, a bell mounted upon said bracket, a resilient clip joined to and angularly depending from said bracket adjacent said support, a flexible arm on said clip normally engageable at its end with said bell, and guide means on said clip engage- 3. In a typewriter having a sheet support, a rotatable sheet feeding platen adjacent its lower end and a slide stop on said support arranged at right angles to said platen, a page and indicator comprising a bracket slidably and adjustably mounted upon said stop, set screws on said bracket engageable with said top, a bell mounted upon said bracket, a resilient clip joined to and angularly depending from said bracket adjacent said support, a flexible arm on said clip normally engageable at its end with said bell, and guide means on said clip engageable by the side of a sheet for maintaining said clip under compression parallel to the side of said sheet while in engagement therewith, whereby as the sheet passes below said guide means under the control of said platen said clip resiliently returns to its initial position with said arm engaging said bell.
i. In a typewriter having a sheet support, a rotatable sheet feeding platen adjacent its lower end and a slide stop on said support arranged at right angles to said platen, a page end indicator comprising a bracket having an upper portion of inverted U shape in cross section mounted over said stop and secured thereto, a bell mounted upon said bracket, a resilient clip joined to and angularly depending from said bracket adjacent said support, a flexible arm on said clip normally engageable at its end with said bell, and guide means on said clip engageable by the side of a sheet for maintaining said clip under compression parallel to the side of said sheet while in engagement therewith, whereby as the sheet passes below said guide means under the control of said platen said clip resiliently returns to its initial position with said arm engaging said bell.
5. In a typewriter having a sheet support and a rotatable sheet feeding platen adjacent its lower end, a page end indicator comprising a bracket on said support, a bell mounted thereon, a resilient clip joined to said bracket and angularly depending therefrom toward the central portion of said platen adjacent said support, and a flexible outwardly curved arm projecting from said clip normally engageable adjacent its ends with said bell, thelower end of said clip having formed thereon a pair of parallel spaced guides at right angles to the plane of said clip defining a slotted guide means on said clip operatively engageable by the side of a sheet for maintainingsaid clip in compression parallel to the side of said sheet while in engagement therewith and with said sheet mounted upon said support and extending around said platen, whereby as the sheet passes below said guide means under the control of said platen said clip resiliently returns to its initial position with said arm resiliently and operatively engaging said bell.
