"thereoi is 55 the carriage of ac nventionaltypew i er whic thcught to-,- 1ear1y,appearj frOI nsuchgioregoing description, it is desired, for the sake of clarity, to briefly summarize the same as follows:
In use, the devices of the present invention are preferably fixed upon the left side of the carriage of the typewriter. Before placing the sheet of paper P in the machine to be written upon, it is superimposed upon a backing sheet 39 in such a manner that the, lower edge P of the sheet of paper P coincides with the lower edge 39' of the backing sheet 39. The backing sheet is provided in the upper left hand corner thereof with a tab 39", the purpose of which will become apparent as the description of the mode of operation and use progresses.
The backing sheet, together with the sheet of paper to be written upon, is now placed in the machine in the usual manner, the same being guided about the platen 11 by the guiding rollers 12. The backing sheet 39 is furthermore engaged in the space 31 intermediate the arms 29 and 30 of the tripping member 26 and, of course, being of lesser thickness than the width of the slot 31, is loosely engaged therein.
The device is now ready for use and the typist proceeds to operate the machine in the usual manner. As the sheet of paper P, together with the backing sheet 39, passes through the machine, the tab 39" approaches the tripping member 26. As soon as the tab 39" comes into contact with the tripping member 26, being of slightly greater thickness than the width of the space 31, the tab 39" becomes wedged intermediate the arms 29 and 30. Continued passing of the sheet of paper P, together with the backing sheet 39, through the machine causes the tripping member'and the plunger to which it is secured to follow downwardly after the paper. Obviously, as
- soon as the tripping member 26 comes into conthat the operator can be exceedingly simple in construction,
tact with the lower bushing 24, it cannot move any further, so that any additional movement of the paper P, together with the backing sheet 39, will meet with such resistance, that the wedged tab 39" of the backing sheet will pass through the slot 31, thus disengaging the arms 29 and 30. As soon as the tripping member is released, theexpansion spring 28 will cause the plunger 25 to immediately return to its normal position, the momentum of the upward movement being such as to cause the alarm-engaging end 34' of the plunger to strike the bell 35, thus warning the operator that he has reached such a point on the sheet of paper P as to throw the typed sheet out of balance if any additional matter is written thereupon.
It will be noted that the point at which the bell will be operated may be variedby adjusting the socket 19 along the length of the bar 18, so warned of the fact that he has reached a certain point on thepaper at any distance from the end of the page that he desires. It will further be noted that the arms 29 and 30 can be adjusted so as to vary the space 31, thus permittingthe use of the devices of the present invention in conjunction with more than one thickness of paper.
This completes the description'of the mode of operation and use of the page-end indicating devices of the present invention, and it will be noted that such page-end indicating devices are very easy and economical to fabricate and assemble, and ad- 'mirably adapted 'to perform the intended functions as hereinbefore set forth.
Other superiorities and advantages of the devices of the 'present invention will readilybccur an audible signal, spring-pressed signal-operating means carried by said casing, tripping mechanism carried by said spring-pressed signal-operating means, and means, cooperating with said tripping mechanism and a sheet of paper to be typed upon, to engage and thereafter release said tripping mechanism when the sheet of paper has passed a predetermined distance through the typewriter, to operate said audible signal.
