SCRAPING AND wmnc TOOL Filed Feb. 8, 1949 3 k I 3mm l J ske malrffcli'zm z Patented Feb. 19, 1 952 This invention relates. to. a scraping and .wiping tool and more particularly to a tool thatlmay be used forscraping from floors, walls and the like, materials that may be adheringthereto.
The primary object of the invention isto remove froma fiat surface such .asafloor, wallor window pane substances, such as tar, chewing gum, bits of papenan-d suchbther foreign matter as;;may adhere thereto.
Anothers'object is to collects-the scrapings as they are removed for subsequent disposal.
Still another object is to present a fresh sharp scraping and wiping edge to the floor or other surface, to insure the proper removal of foreign substances therefrom.
A further important object of the invention is to removably hold the scraping and wiping blade so that it may be detached from the han dle for replacement as well as to enable it to be rotated about its axis in order to present a fresh sharp edge to the surface to be cleaned.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a wiping orscraping blade comprising an elongated bar which is substantially square in cross section to form between adjacent faces of each corner a relatively sharp right angled scraping edge, said bar being formed of a relatively hard substance, such as hard rubber, and having an elongated longitudinal scrapings receiving groove in each of its side walls midway between opposite side edges thereof, a holder for said blade comprising a channel shaped body, longitudinally extending ribs on the inner faces of the channel shaped body for entering the grooves in the bar, thumb screws extending through and threadedly engaging one of the flanges of said channel shaped body for impinging on the blade and holding said blade in the holder, a handle socket carried by and projecting outwardly from said channel shaped body midway between opposite ends thereof and a handle removably received in said socket.
In the drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mop embodying the features of this invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front end view of the mop illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the blade.
Referring to the drawings in detail a holder designated generally l comprises a channel I 2,5 ,472 I I. Q ,7
SCRAPING AND WIRING TOOL p v Sherma :McKcwn, Pampa,Tx.- Y V Application February 8, 1949,;Srial No. 15,163
' 1 Claim. (01. 15 -2'ss) 2. r shapedbody having .a web. l2 and 'spaced parallel flanges I4 and lii'extending outwardly from the longitudinalside edges of the web. Carried"b'y' the inner face ofthe web 12 midway between the flanges l4 and I6 is an elongated longitudi nal'rib' l8lwhichextends throughout the. length of the, web l2; A similar inwardly extending rib.,2fi"is carried'byjthe-flangel4, and projecting; inwardly. from the flange. 16 in opposed relation to..the.rib"20 is a rib 22. The flange. I4'is'.pro'-" vided' with spaced parallel internally" screw threaded openings 24 for the reception of thumb screws 26 the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. Welded or otherwise fixed to the web [2 and projecting outwardly therefrom substantially midway between opposite ends is an internally screw threaded handle receiving socket 28 in which the threaded end of a suitable handle 3|] is received. The handle is preferably an elongated substantially cylindrical body resembling a conventional broom handle having an externally screw threaded extension 32 which threads into the socket 28 as will be readily understood upon reference to Figure 3.
A wiping and scraping blade designated generally 34 is removably held in the head II] by the thumb screws 26. This wiping and scraping blade 34 comprises an elongated body 36 which is substantially square in cross section and of a size readily to fit in the head ID between the flanges l4 and Hi. This body 36 is preferably formed of hard rubber or a like composition and is provided in each side midway between opposite marginal edges thereof with a longitudinally extending groove 38 in which the ribs I8, 20 and 22 are received. These grooves 38 extend throughout the entire length of the body 36 and serve to receive and retain such substances as may be scraped loose from the surface being cleaned.
In use the wiping and scraping blade 34 is placed in the head In substantially as illustrated in the drawings and the handle 30 is manipulated so that a sharp edge of the body 36 formed at the junction of adjacent sides thereof is brought into contact with the floor or other surface to be cleaned. If the mop is employed against the side wall of a room or building, or
against the pane of a window, any foreign matter adhering to the surface being cleaned will be scraped loose and the uppermost groove 38 will serve as a receptacle therefor. As the edge of the body 35 that is bein used becomes worn so that its function as a scraper becomes impaired, the thumb screws may be loosened and,
r q 3 the wiping and scraping blade 34 may be withdrawn from the head 10 and turned about its longitudinal axis. Upon restoring the blade 34 to its position in the head I 0 a fresh sharp corner of the body 36 will be presented to the work. When all four corners of the body 36 become so worn as to impair the efiiciency of the blade 34, it may be removed from the head l0 and a new wiping and scraping 'blade may be substituted therefor. Obviously, when occasion demands, the device may be employed in the manner of a squeegee in removing moisture from fiat surfaces such as window panes or the like.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A scraping and wiping tool comprising a blade, said blade embodying an elongated body of a moderately hard material, said body being substantially square in cross section to form at each corner a sharp scraping edge, each face of said body having a groove midway between opposite marginal edges thereof extending through the length of the body to form a scrapings receiver,
a channel shaped holder partially embracing said blade intermediate the ends thereof, said holder having an elongated web and flanges extending along opposite side edges of said web, a longitudinal rib on the inner face of the web and on the inner face of each flange of the holder for entering the grooves in the body of the blade and thumb screws extending through and threadedly engaging one flange of the channel shaped holder, said thumb screws impinging on the blade to hold it in the holder.
