NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
\VILLIAM ZIMMER, OF BELLAIRE, OHIO.
GLASS OR EARTHENWA RE PITCHER OR JUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,526, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed February 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, WILLIAM ZIMMER, of Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement iii Glass or Earthenware Pitchers or Jugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
My invention relates particularly to that class of pitchers or jugs which are made of glass, and which have heretofore been provided with a handle of the same material or composition, rigidly secured to the side of the body for the purpose of carrying and handling them; and the object of my invention is to provide this class of pitchers or jugs with means for securing a bail or bail-handle directly to the body of the pitcher or jug, so that the same may be readily carried thereby, and thus bring the weight of the pitcher or jug and its contents in the best 'possible position for being carried or tilted, all as more full y hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to know how to construct and use it, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a pitcher or jug embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of one of the ears with which the pitcher or jug is provided; and Fig. 3, a detail view, in perspective, of one of these ears.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the drawings.
A represents the body of a pitcher or jug made of glass or earthenware, provided on each side, near the edge of its top, with cars a a, made of the same material or composition, and arranged opposite each other at a point about half-way between the rigid handle 13 and mouth or lip (3. Into holes or recesses with which these cars are provided are inserted the free ends I) of the bail or bail-handle D, the said ends being bent inwardly for this purpose. This bail or bail-handle may be made of any form and of any material; but to make it of metal is the most preferable, as it enables the free ends to be sprung in and out of the holes or recesses of the ears, and thus adapts it to be removed and adjusted at will.
The cars with which the pitcher or jug is provided may be made in any ornamental shape, so as to be adapted to the purpose intended, and may be molded with the pitcher orjug as it is being manufactured, or made in separate pieces, and then secured thereto in any suitable manner.
It will be observed that this pitcher or jug not only may be carried with the same ease and security as a water or other bucket, but can be tilted to pour out its contents as conveniently as an ordinary pitcher or jug.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
As a new article of merchandise, a glass pitcher having a handle adapted for tilting and a separate handle adapted for carrying the same, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 7th day of February, 1882.
WILLIAM ZIMMER. Witnesses:
