(o1. sis- 53) This invention has to do with a novel type of `machine for setting up cartons.` Morelparticularly, it pertains to a machine for setting up collapsed cartons of the bottle carrying type by folding the side wall sections and manipulating the end panels along predetermined lines of fold in order to maintain the carton in set-up and locked position. p
Generally, it is an object oi the invention to provide mechanismior holding a side wail portion of such cartons downwardiy in a xedy position in order to be able to open the cartons, mechanism for thereafter opening rthe cartons by folding the remaining wall sections along fold lines adjacent the ends of the wall ofthe carton which is held down in iixed position, andmechanism for manipulating they end/'wall panelsfor maintaining the cartons in opened and'interlocked set-up position. p
More specifically, it isan object of the invention to provide almachine asabovedescribed in which there is included oppositely disposed YInovable hold down ngers to hold down a side wall of the carton in fixed position to permit folding and manipulating of the remaining bottom and side wall portions of the carton in orderV to Yopen the same, folding arms or members adapted to engage the bottom panel of the carton and to fold the same around predetermined'lines of fold adjacent the ends of the held down side wall panel in such a manner as completely to open the carton, and end panel tucking and locking iingers for forming the end walls of the carton'. and to bring the same ink interlocked position so that the carton will be maintained in an open, erect and upright position for the reception of' the goods which they are adapted to receive.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

The type of carton especially adapted to be handled by this machine is that more particularly disclosed in Patent No. 2,345,568 commonly used as a carrying ycarton for.y well known bottled beverages. I
Referring more particularly to the drawings,
there is shown a bed plate indicated generally at I and suitably connected to the sides of the machine for receiving collapsed cartons with handles inserted therein. On each side of the bed plate two shafts II, II are held in vertical position. Since the various mechanisms and other structure operating upon and in conjunction with these shafts are thevsame on both sides of the center line, as heretofore indicated, it is not deemed necessary to repeat the description and operation, but like parts will be referred to by like numbers. At the bottom end of each shaft I I is a miter gear I2 which is meshed `with a miter gear I3 on a main drive shaft I4. This drive shaft I4 is rotated in any suitable manner from a drive gear or wheel member I5 at one end of the shaft and from any suitable source of power.
Attached toward the upper end of each vertical shaft II is a cam member I6 (see Figs. 4 and 8).
The rotation of the shaft I I rotates the camming elements I6, and these in turn operate the carton hold down finger mechanism. This finger mech*- anism preferably consists of a generally triangularly shaped member I1 which is pivotally mounted at I8 on the frame of the machine adjacent the bed plate I0. Atone end of the triangular member I'I is a cam roller which follows the cam member I6 by which it is actuated. At an opposite end of the triangular member is a spring I9 secured tothe frame of the machine so that the triangular member can be spring retracted. Each triangularly shaped member I'I has a slight projection!!! at its spring controlled end and this is the finger which is adapted to enter between the side walls of the carton to hold one of the walls in fixed position against the bed plate I0.
After a collapsed carton has been passed onto the bed plate I0 and held down as above described, the same is ready to be opened by folding the remaining wall sections, including the base or bottom panel, along fold lines at each end of the side walls.
Referring to Figs. 8 and 12, it will be understood that foid lines appear at each end of the collapsed carton, that is, at 2I, along a line paralleling the ridge 23 of the ultimately erected carton, and at 22 along the base of the uppermost side wall. The fold line which defines the base of the other, lower side wall is indicated at 24.
The carton opening mechanism is constituted by a pair of actuating arms 25 mounted upon a shaft 26 journaled in the side frames of the machine, somewhat below but in parallel arrangement with the main drive shaft I4. At the upper end of each arm is a gear segment 2'I meshed with a mutilated gear 28 suitably journaledA in the frame of the machine. Each gear 28 has secured thereto an extension folding arm 29 with a raised shoulder 30 against which the leading edge of the carton abuts as it is fed into the machine along the bed plate I0. Actually, these folding or carton opening arms l29 are pivotally mounted in spaced apart position in such a manner that they will receive, for example, the bottom panel or base of the carton as it is moved along the base plate and against the abutting shoulders 30.V It is at this moment that the above described hold down members I1 secure the collapsed carton to the bed plate.
Simultaneously with this action the folding arms 29 swing upwardly through an angle of 93 and somewhat therebeyond, as illustrated inFig. 1
in dotted line position, and in so doing, fraise or i swing the base of the carton so as to open it by folding the various connected panels along the fold lines 2|, 22, 23 and 24. This pivotal movement of the arms 29 is imparted thereto by the actuating arm 25 having the gear segment 2l 5 thereon. The arm 25 in turn is actuated by the rotation of the main drive shaft because of the connecting structure between it and the shaft 26. For example, in the center of the shaft 26 there is secured an extension arm 3| carrying a cam m roller or follower 32. This arm is drawn in the direction of the drive shaft I4 by means of a spring 33 attached to a base extension 34 oi' the machine. The spring 33 holds the cam roller 32 against an actuating cam 35 on the shaft I4. 15 It will readily be seen that the movement of the cam 35 contacting 'the cam follower 32 actuates the arm 3I which in turn oscillates the shaft 26. The shaft 26 carrying the actuating arms 25 piv- `otally swings the folding arms 29 through and f m beyond the 90 above mentioned.
Looking down upon the opened carton now lying on the side wall which is held down against the bed plate, as shown in Fig. 9, both the side walls and base or bottom of the carton now can be seen.
g5 Also, the openings in the carton for the reception of such commodities as the bottles heretofore mentioned permit the position of some of the panel sections of the end walls to be seen. It is necessary rst to inwardly and upwardly tuck the :zo uppermost pair of panel sections of the end walls toward the uppermost side wall. For convenience these panel sections are numbered 36. The tucking-in operation is accomplished by means of the tucking mechanisms indicated generally at 3l (see 35 Figs. 6 and 9) and this mechanism functions in I,this respect approximately simultaneously with the operation of the opening of the carton by means of the arms 29.
The above mentioned panel tucking mecha- 4'0 nisms are operated by the same shafts II which operate the mechanism for holding down the side wall of the carton. That is, there are also secured on the shafts II cam members 38. Suspended adjacent these cam members are tucking rods or fingers 39 for inwardly and upwardly tucking the panel sections 36. These fingers 39 preferably are pivotally suspended as at 40 by suitably securing them in the top of the machine frame.
It is next necessary upwardly and outwardly to fold the remaining oppositely disposed end wall panel sections which are designated on the drawings as 4I. This is accomplished by the locking panel and tucking mechanism somewhat diagrammatically depicted in Fig. 7. A tucking and locking member, for manipulating each panel 4I, is indicated generally at 42 and is moved in the direction of the arc indicated by the arrow in Fig. 7. This member is pivotally mounted on a shaft 43 and is held in a downward position by a counterweight 44 also mounted on the shaft 43. Disposed beneath the counterweight and mounted to slide in a slot 45 formed by the gibs 46 and 41 is a T-shaped member 48 carrying a, cam roller 49. This cam roller rides the edge surface of avcam 5U which is mounted on the` drive shaft I4. The tucking and locking members 42 move upwardly through side recesses in bed plate I0 and strike the panels 4I from beilow as viewed in the drawings. In doing this they pass through the bottle receiving openings in the lower side wall of the carton. This action occurs, of course, after the hold down 'fingers Il have moved out of operative position. The hold 75 down fingers are no lo'nger 'necessary in' any assaove event inasmuch as the folding arms 29 now securely hold the carton downwardly against the bed plate to permit completion of the manipulating of the end panel sections 4l of the remaining cartonl end wall portions. i
The carton end walls are interlocked as shown more clearly in Fig. 11. Locking action takes place by having the locking members 42 manipulate the panel sections "4I (see Figs. 10'and 11) in such a manner that a locking tab 5l, provided by a notch in the panel 4l, straddles theglue flap or ridge piece 52 immediately beneath the ridge along the top of the carton. This locking action serves to hold the carton in set-up interlocked position as shown in Fig. 12.
It will be appreciated that certain lchanges'may be made in the above construction and dierent embodiments of the invention could be made i without departing from the scope thereof, hence, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in xed position: mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said first named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panel to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
2. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed,
knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism including a pivotally mounted hold down finger for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said rst named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating the folded end wall panels of the carton to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
3. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism including oppositely disposed and pivotally mounted, cam actuated hold down fingers for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottomv about said rst named and further fold lines, and mechanism`for manipulating the folded end wall lpanels ofthe carton to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last namedmechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same inea direction outwardly of the carton. 4. -A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterizedby a pair of ropposed sidewalls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls onfurther fold lines, Vand end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knockdown condition of the carton, whichcomprises, in combination, mechanism including a pair of pivotally mounted, spring retracted hold down fingers, for holding a portion of one' side wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said first named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end Wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
- 5. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side Wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism including a pivotally mounted carton bottom folding member, for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said i-irst named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named `mechanism including means acting on a portion vof said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
6. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to saidV side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knockdown condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in xed position, mechanism including pivotally mounted and cam actuated carton panel manipulating arms for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said rst named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side Walls. said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
7. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in xed position, mechanism including cani Vactuated and spring retracted carton bottom folding members, for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said rst named and further fold lines, and mechanism for manipulating theV folded end wall panels 4to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angleto said side walls, said last named mechanism including. means acting on a portion'of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
8. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized-by a pair of opposedside Walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between andhinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton, which -comprises in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in fixed position mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom aboutsaid first named and further fold lines, and mechanism including oppositely disposed end panel tucking members for manipulatingthe folded end wall panels. to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
9. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposediside walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines and end wall panels hinged to and folded betweenl said side walls inthe collapsed, knockdownA condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in xed position, mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said first named and further fold lines, and mechanism including cam actuatedend panel tucking fingers for manipulating the foldedend wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on. a portion of said end wall panels to urge the vsame in a direction outwardly of the carton.
10. A machine for setting up collapsed cartons Ycharacterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and. hinged to said side walls on further folding the other side wall and bottom about sa-id first named and further fold lines, and mechanism including pivotahy mounted panel locking members for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
11. A .machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold linesl andend wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsed, knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said first named and further fold lines, and mechanism including cam `actuated and counterweighted panel locking members for manipulating the folded end wall panels to opened and interlocked set-up position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.

A machine for setting up collapsed cartons characterized by a pair of opposed side walls connected by a fold line, a bottom extending between and hinged to said side walls on further fold lines, and end wall panels hinged to and folded between said side walls in the collapsedl knock-down condition of the carton, which comprises, in combination, mechanism including a pivotally mounted hold down finger, for holding a portion of one side wall of the carton in fixed position, mechanism including pivotally mounted carton bottom folding members for opening the carton by folding the other side wall and bottom about said first named and further fold lines, mechanism including oppositely disposed finger members and pivotally mounted panel locking members for manipulating the end Wall panels to opened and locked position at a right angle to said side walls, said last named mechanism including means acting on a portion of said end wall panels to urge the same in a direction outwardly of the carton.
