The invention provides .a machine particularly adapted for erectinga carton such-as disclosed in my said patent application and here illustrated as a blank in Fig. 4 and in erected condition in -Fig. 5, comprisinga. bottom" 3llfand upwardly folded pairs of opposite side walls 3|. and .32 and '33. and 34. The adjacent side walls at each corner of the box are integrally. connected by folded-corner webs or flaps to '38, inclusive, which. are
.each 'foldedmedially as at 39. Flaps 3B and 31 have on their outer wallstopextensions 40 and 4| which are folded over inwardly and downwardly :between the flaps and the adjacentside walls-3| andz32, the lines of fold having therein slots 42 adapted to receive and interlock with hooks 43 .formed at the tops of the innerwalls of theother corner flaps 35 and 38, respectively. -,Each;; hook '43 has an, undercut edge -44 which snaps over the endv of the corresponding slot 42,;so,as tointerposition. A ,fluid tighticarton is thus provided with bottom and side walls having continuous,
- folded, leakproof connection with eachother be- Theembodiment' oi the invention hereindisclosed; by way of illustration. comprises, prefervbearings 41 supporting. the ,end portions of an.
support a pair of spindles 54 and 55 extending parallel with each other along the opposite sides of support 49, as shown. =-A pair of-wing's '6 and 51 are mounted on the"'s'pindles, -respe'ctively,
for oscillating movement from the substantially 1, up to and somewhat beyond a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 9, each wing having 'for' this' Y purpose a plurality of knuckles rotatably embracingits spindle. Th'e'wingsareraisedeand lowered by mechanism connected therewith, and .the spindles F54 and 55 are separately oscillated for actuating certainother :parts, 2315' hereafter described.
351 -Ffor raising ear-ton wall 34,?ha's brackdis "5% fixed on its opposite ends i and supporting a pair of plates each having an edge turned'to provide an elongated abutment :59, Figs. .1 to 3, inclusive, in fixed relation with the' wing. Wing 51 is provided also alongzitsifree iedge with-three spaced 'guides 60, ='-6l,-iand $2, Fig. l, in the 'form of U-shaped clips each-fixedsat one'endCFig. 'to theba'ck of "the Wing and having its oth'er' end l5 horizontal, blank receiving position shown ln Fig pivotally .connected with one end of -a link -82 projecting around over thezupper face of the wing in spaced 'relatio-n thereto, to receive and position one edgeof the 'bl'arikflascshownin Fig. 4. Guides $60 and 5152 carry curved -'fi- rrg'er extensions 63 and 64 for-guidingtheiblanktoposition.
'Wing56-has :axpair of upstanding guide brack-.
ts '95'atits 'outer- 'edge :to locate and hold the opposite edge of the blank, 125 shown .in .Fig. 4.
*It is evident from the above construction that -''a blank maybe readily slid into place on support :49 an'ditswinglextensions '56 and 5.1,:lwith one edge' bf-theiblank under the guides 60ato164, in-
WardIy'somewhatabove the top surface'iof the wing 'and' under :the corner fo'ld silaps wsand 3 1, -"support" these corner folds and' the side "walls 3l and 32 atan initial-upward inclination toinsure pr'oper folding ofsuch parts when the Wings '156 and- 51 are raised.
'Wing =51 has fixed-thereon -a bracket tfi 1'1, pivotally connected with one 'end of a li-nk'.:61,rthe other end of whichis pivotally connected with a lever 68 which rocked by the operating rne'chariism hereafter described, to raise and lower th'e' wfi'ng. Wing 55 has fixed thereon' a'ibracket 69, Fig. 1 9,-p'ivotally '--connected with c ne-end o'f alink "10, the other end of which is-pivoted to a l lever '11 which is To cked' by mecl ianisrn here- -"after descr ibe'd, to' swing the wing timed coordinati'on with wing-'51, 'so that the "wings'are raised fromthe substantially horizontal position "shown' in :Fig.- 2-to the upwardly inclined position "shown-in Fig, 7 and eventually to theposition "shownin Fig. 9 'in'which they are'irrclinedseinewhat inwardly toward each oth'er. such movement, the wings fold the side Walls 33 and 34 upwardly and fold the corner folds outwardly, thereby folding the side walls 3| and 32 upwardly, assisted by the pressure ofthe abutments 59 on wing 51, so as to position the parts of the blank as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The final inward inclination of the wings 56 and 51 tends to compress the carton and bulge the sidewalls 31 and 32 inwardly as indicated at '12, Fig. -8, thereby tending to incline the tops of the corner folds inwardly and downwardly, when in their fully foldedposition against the side walls, to assist in ngaging'them with each other, as more fully described hereafter.
i The means'jior tolding inwardly, engaging and interlock-ing the corner flaps with each other in pairs, comprises preferably a pair of rounded tucking fingers '13, Figs. 1, 9, 11, and 15, one at --'-ea"ch end of wing 51 and fixed on the opposite ends of a shaft 14 rotatably mounted in bearings -fl5 on the =under side-,of the wing. Fixed on shaft 11:4 isaa, pinion--:1:E;-Fig. 11, meshing with a spur gear. 11 fixed-on -a short shaft 18 journaled in "bearings 19 :on the wing- .Fixedpmshaft "is an ;-arm "89, Figs. 1'1 and I5, pivotal-1y connected with oneend ofa link 8| having its'other end tweenthecorner folds and the adjacent side walls of .the carton.
As the fingers 13 descend, they-qgn'ess' the: extensions and the-corner folds-:36 and 31 between themandsthefixed abutments 59 of the wing, so asto 'bowthe'corner folds outwardly, raising andretractingtheouter ends of their foldedi:p0rtions a sjndicated atr84, Fig. 10, in slightly spaced relation with extensions 40, thus l positioning .theseporner folds, and their in-folded extensions -40, etc-receive between them the cooperating corner folds-35aI-1d 38 which are folded inwardly :for that gpurpose-xby means-which will now be described.
- {lhemeans forcornpleting'the inward folding hand interlocking"of the corner folds 35 to 38,
inclusive, comprises swinging arms *preferably smounted at the-opposite ends of both wings 56 mounted on spindles 86 supported-on the under -sides of the opposite ends of wing 5-6 and extend- "the arms to apo sition in which they are inclined somewhat upwardly in the horizontal position of -"the wing, as shown in'FigJ 2, to assist thea'butmentsss' in initiallypositioning the blank in the machine as described above. Actuating means "areprovided 'for the arms 85, operated after the fingers 13 have positioned the corner folds36 and-31,*as described-and"as shown in Fig. 10,

V In .the present embodiment operating-shaft is preferably rocked manually-by meansyofga crank lever I2I and handle I2 2,-F igs.,-1, 2, and.l5,
the frame being preferably provided with upper "and lower brackets I23 and I24 serving as stops for arresting the crank in its extreme positions.
It is obvious, however, that such manual operating means may be replaced by a motor dr iven mechanism, 1
The operation of the machine has bee plained in connection with the above-description of itsconstruction, from-whichitis evident j'that a blank may be readily fed-to the machine so as to lie with its bottom section on support-49 and one pair of opposite sidewalls on wings. 56
corner folds about their median lines 3 9..to force them outwardly and force inwardly and raisethe other pairof side walls, 3I and 32', to a position bowed somewhat inwardly beyond the vertical, as shown in Fig. 8. Continued rotation offthe crank then causes the fingers 13 to swing inwardly and downwardly against the upper edges of the-topextensions 40 and 4| of the corner f0lds 36 and 31, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, so as to fold these top extensions downwardly between their corner folds and the side walls of the'carton, as shown in Fig. 10. In this folding step, the flapsand their extensions I are bent or bowed outwardly and somewhat raised and separated, as shown, sothat inthe extreme lower position of the fingers 13, .shown in dotted lines in Fig, 10, the corners. of
the cooperating flaps 35 and 38 may be: readily .e srsniia entered between the flaps as and at andntheir in' -folded top extensions. Asshownin ftill lines, Fig.- 10, the fingers-are rising, .allowing the flaps 36 and 31' to straighten somewhat "after "their folded portions have received the ends" of -the cooperating-flaps 35and 38. i w
"Continued rotation of the crank swingsfn wardly the presser' arms or clips 92,-"Figs.=11-=an'd 13, to' further straighten and-aline the engaged corner folds andinsert the hooks 43 in their slots fl. On further rotation of the crank the "fingers 88- andthe arms =92- -areretracted, the wings 'sfi and areswung downwardly to horizontal position,' releasing the carton'walls' 33 and B L-and allowing thewalls 3i and 32' to straighten-and swing outwardly, thus forcing the undercut edges of the hooks into secure locking engagementwith -theends of their slots. Thecarton then remains with one of the closure flaps under the-positioning guides 60 to- 64, inclusive, rest- 'ing'on wing 5?, as shown in Fig. 14, in condition to-be'readily slid out of engagement-with the lo catingguides and removed from the machine which is then ready for repetition of the-opera tion. v
The machine is'thus adapted to quickly erect the sidewalls with their outwardly extending corner flaps and to efliciently bend and; position the corner folds for--engagement one within the folded portions ofthe other and to interlock them securelywith one another to complete the erectionof the carton, The machine is'adap-ted to readilyreceive the blanks as they are' fed to it and presents the folded cartoninconvenient position for removal from the machine, theentire operation being rapidly; precisely,--and accura-t'ely performed.
It will thus be seen that the invention accompllshes' its objects and While it has been herein disclosed-by reference to the details of a'pre --ferred embodiment, it is to be understood that such disclosure is intended -in -anillustrative,
