This application is a continuation in part of my co-pending application of the same name filed June 17, 1946, Serial No. 677,260, now abandoned.
The :present invention relates to a doll with a plurality of faces each of which may be successively brought to exposed position while the others are concealed behind hair or some other covering. The invention more particularly concerns novel support means for the hair and other stationary portions of the head, and of means for quickly, easily and exactly bringing the respective faces to exposed position.
An object of the present invention is the pro vision of concealed support means for the upper, stationary portion of the head.
A further object is the provision of means for causing revolution of the rotatable part of thehead containing the faces, in such fashion that the change is substantially instantaneous as well as exact as to degree of rotation.
,In. accomplishing the objects of the present invention the upper or stationary part of the head is supported on a stationary rod firmly fastened in the doll body and extending axially through the head and through the mechanism by which the rotatable part of the head is transported from one position to another. The support means is thus effectively concealed and the appearance of the doll thereby improved.
The face transporting means comprises two coaxial coil springs, a lever, and a cylinder all surrounding the axial rod, the cylinder comprising ratchet means engaging pawl means on the face portion of the head, and detent and cam means operative to connect the lever to the cylinder to revolve the same 120 degrees, thereby engaging the interengaging means of cylinder and head in a new relative relation while loading both coil springs. At the end of 120 degree travel of the lever, the detent means disconnects the cylinder from the lever and one of the coil springs causes substantially instantaneous rotation of cylinder and head through 120 degrees, while upon release of the lever by the hand of the user the second coil spring returns it to the original position.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter be pointed out. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the constructions hereinafter described. In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:

Figure -1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved doll.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the head and pateof the doll on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the doll body I0 is connected as hereafter described to a neck portion l I of a head I I A comprising the faces l2, 13, i 3A equidistantly spaced about the circumference thereof. The pate portion 133 comprising simulated hair or other covering M for two of the three faces is supported on 'a rod [5 firmly connected to and extending centrally upwardfrom a cylindrical casing is located in body 19 substantially in the chest portion thereof. Casing I6 is formed with a slot ll extending substantially one third around the circumference thereof.
The flanges l8 of click block I!) ride loosely in casing l6, click block l9 also being free to revolve on rod 15. A pin 2| extends from flange 18 into 51017 I! so that angular travel of click block i9 is limited to approximately degrees.
A hollow boss 22 extends coaxially upward from the bottom of casing l6. Around boss 22 is located the lever return coil spring 23 which is anchored to the bottom of easing I5 and to lever 25. Within boss 22 is located the aforementioned rod 15 and between rod and boss is the traversing coil spring 24 anchored at its lower end to casing I6 and at its upper end to click block 19. Lever 25 is pivotally mounted on boss 22.
A pin 26 extends from click block l9 downward to engage a detent 2'! mounted for radial sliding motion in the collar of lever 25 and urged outwardly by spring 28.
A ratchet 29 is mounted on to of the head portion HA and comprises the faces 30, 3|, 32 which are engaged by the pawl 33 to prevent rotation of head IIA clockwise of Figure 2. A leaf spring 34 keeps pawl 33 in engagement with the faces of ratchet 29.
A second circumferential slot 35 in casing it permits traverse of lever 25 within limits of approximately 120 degrees. A cam 36 on the inside surface of casing I6 is engaged by the depending foot 36A of detent 21 when lever 25 is traversed to the opposite limit of motion from that illustrated in Figure 3.
The upper portion of click block I9 is formed with the ratchet 19A comprising the three faces 31, 31A, 31B, and a pawl 38 mounted on pin 39 in neck I l is urged radially inwardly against ratchet 19A by the spring 40 mounted on neck IL The surfaces 31, 31A, 313 being spaced 120 degrees apart, click block I9 is adapted to traverse head IIA in successive steps of 120 degrees to expose the faces 12, BA, 13 one by one and in the order named.
In operation, starting with lever 25 in the position of Figure 3, lever 25 is moved clockwise thereof through 120 degrees. This torsionally loads both the coil springs 23, 24, and, because of the connection between detent 21 and pin 26, moves click block l9 around rod l clockwise of Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5. Clockwise movement of head HA is prevented by pawl 33 engaging ratchet 29. Motion of click block 19 while head HA remains stationary results in a new relative interengagement of the ratchet faces 31, 31A, 31B 120 degrees removed from the last interengagement.
Immediately after this new relative engagement of head and click block, the lover reaches the end of its travel and cam 36 acting on foot 36A trips the detent 21, freeing click block l9 to respond to spring 24 which in a substantially instantaneous movement traverses click block l9 and head HA counterclockwise of Figures 2, 4 and 5 to expose face [3A. As soon as lever 25 is released by the hand of the user, spring 23 returns it counterclockwise to the illustrated position of Figures 1 and 3.
It will thus be sen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrativeand not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. In a multiple faced doll, adoll body, a casing located in said body, a rod firmly connected to said casing and extending upward therefrom, a pate portion firmly connected to said rod, a head portion comprising a plurality of faces revolubly mounted on said rod intermediate said casing and said pate portion, a click block revolubly mounted on said rod below said head, said head and click block being formed with interengaging ratchet means, a lever mounted in said casing for rotation about the axis of said rod, detent means mounted on said lever and operatively engaging said click block, a coil spring located around said rod and connected to said click block and said casing, and cam means mounted on said casing and operating upon said detent means to disconnect said lever from said click block at the end of the stroke of said lever, whereby said lever is first operative simultaneously to move said click block to a new position to interengagement with said head and to load said spring, then to release said click block to the influence of said spring to effect substantially instantaneous traverse of said head to expose a new face.
2. In a multiple faced doll comprising a doll baby, a pate portion firmly supported in fixed relation thereto, a multiple faced head revolubly supported intermediate said body and said pate portion, a ratchet member revolubly supported in said body below said head, and pawl means on said head engaging said member for rotating said head by rotation of said member, the improvement comprising resilient means operatively connected to said body and to said member, actuating means operatively connected to said member, said actuating means being operative simultaneously to rotate said ratchet member to a new position of interengagement with said head and to load said resilient means, and means operatively related to said actuating means and automatically disconnecting the latter from said member at the end of a stroke of said actuatin means, thereby releasing said member to the action of said resilient means to efiect substantially instantaneous traverse of said member and head to expose a new face.
