Description

Feb. 5; 1952 c. H
RN PACKER AND SL AESEMBLY EXPANDED BY INT AL. PRESSURE Filed Jan. 29, 1949 INVENTOR. URL Hifl/V- ll TTOR/VEY- Patented Feb. 5, 1952 UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE PACKER AND SLIP ASSEMBLY EXPANDED BY INTERNAL PRESSURE This invention relates to a packer and slip assembly, the slip assembly being expanded and set in the well by pressure exerted within the pipe string, which carries the tool.
This invention is particularly adaptable to slip constructions which are used in an oil well to hold a tool or packer against longitudinal movement within the bored well.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel slip assembly which is expanded by pressure within the string of pipe carrying the tool, this internal pressure being directed evenly against the slips to efiectively press the slips against the bore of the well.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel device of the character stated, in which internal pressure in a string of pipe is exerted against an expandible sleeve, this expanding sleeve acting through wedges, which engage the slips and press the slips against the bore of the well.
Still another object is to provide a novel device of the character stated, which is simple in construction and effective in operation.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view of my slip and packer assembly.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a pipe string upon which the tool is mounted. The pipe I screws into a collar 2, and a mandrel 3 is threaded into the collar 2. A second collar 4 screws onto the lower end of the mandrel 3 and a packer 5 is mounted on the collar 4. The packer 5 may be of the type disclosed in my co-pending application Serial Number 73,471, filed January 29, 1949, on cup type packer, or it may be any other type of tool or packer desired. The expandable slip assembly 6 is mounted between the collars 2 and 4. An elastic sleeve I surrounds the mandrel 3 and fits into a seat 8 in the collar 2, and a seat 9 in the collar 4. A plurality of ports l0 extend through the wall of the mandrel 3V and ermit pressure in the pipe I to be exerted against the inside of :the elastic sleeve 1. A plurality of wedge strips H fit against the outer face of the sleeve 1. The inner faces of the wedges II are curved as shown at 12 so as to conform to the outer surface of the sleeve 1. The outer faces of the wedges H are square and fit against the inner faces of the slips l3. A plurality of these slips are provided around the sleeve 1, and the slips are pressed outwardly to engage the bore H! by hydraulic pressure within the pipe I.
A plurality of springs [5 are mounted on'the collar 2, and these springs press against the upper part of the slips l3, thus holding these slips in position in the tool. A similar group of springs 16 are mounted on the collar 4, and engage the lower part of each of the slips [3. These springs permit the slips to move inwardly and outwardly, but hold them against accidental displacement.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a slip assembly a tubular mandrel, said mandrel having holes extending through the wall thereof, an elastic sleeve surrounding said mandrel, a plurality of elongated slips circumferentially spaced around the sleeve, wedge strips arranged between the sleeve and the slips, each wedge strip engaging the sleeve and two adjacent slips whereby said slip are cammed outwardly on dilation of the sleeve.
2. In a slip assembly a tubular mandrel, said mandrel having holes extending through the wall thereof, an elastic sleeve surrounding said mandrel, a plurality of elongated slips circumferentially spaced around the sleeve, wedge strips arranged between the sleeve and the slips, each wedge strip engaging the sleeve and two adjacent slips whereby said slips are cammed outwardly on dilation of the sleeve, each of said wedge strips being substantially triangular in cross-section.
