2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding tables and more particularly to a picnic type table provided with permanent seats which are foldable with the legs against the bottom of the table.
,en important object of the invention is to provide bench type seats at each side of the table and supported on foldable table legs whereby the seats may remain attached to the table while the legs are folded.
Another object is to provide novel locking means holding the legs in open position and in which the locking means is carried by and concealed in the seats when the table is in its open position.
A further object is to provide a device of this character ofsimple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manum facture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operationas more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the table in folded position;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 2; and
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line i-E of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 designates a table top having transverse battons t adjacent each end and to which pairs of legs 1 are hinged-for folding upwardiy under the top.
Each pair of legs is provided with a cross bar E projecting outwardly at each side of the table to form a seat support.
Each seat 9 comprises upper and lower planks it and H secured to each other by bolts and nuts i2 at their ends and by bolts and nuts I3 at their center. The opposing faces of the planks are formed with longitudinal grooves providing a slot i4 between the center and end bolts and nuts which extend from edge to edge of the seats and in which shafts I5 formed` at the ends of cross bars 8 are slidable and which support the seats. The outer ends of shafts l5 are formed with heads IB positioned at the outer edges of the seats to hold the seats thereon.
Locking bars I1 are pivoted at one end in the slots ifi by bolts and nuts i5 adjacent the inner ends of the slots and are swingable into and out of longitudinal position with respect to the seats to' engage the shafts I 5 and hold the same locked from sliding movement in the outer ends of the slots to thus lock the legs in an open position.
In the operation of the device, when the legs are open. as shown in Figure 3, the locking bars il are swung into a. longitudinal position in slots 4 and concealed between upper and lower planks I0 and l I to hold the shafts I5 in the outer ends of the slots, and thus lock the legs in open position against inward and upward swinging movement under the table top. The hinges it for the legs are positioned at the inner edges of the battens 6 and with the upper ends of the legs bearing against the bottoms of the battons to prevent outward swinging movement of the legs.
When it is desired to fold the table, locking bars Il are swung into a crosswise position, as shown in Figures 4 and 6 and shafts l5 then slide inwardly in the slots I4 and legs i may then swing upwardly under the table, while still con nected to the seats.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A folding table comprising a top having pairs of legs adjacent each end of the top and foldable under the top, a transverse bar carried by each pair of legs, seats at each side of the table supported on said bars, said seats having slots in which the bars are slidable during foldn ing movement of the legs, and locking means for the legs concealed in said slots and engaging the bars to hold the legs in open position.
2. A folding table comprising a top having pairs of legs adjacent each end of the top and foldable under the top, a transverse bar carried by each pair of legs, a seat at each side of the table and having slots in which the ends of the bars are slidable, and a locking bar in each slot and holding said transverse bar stationary to lock the legs in open position.
