INK-FOUNTAIN;
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 258,290, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed August 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED GAGE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented, made, and applied to use Improvements in the Construction of Ink-Fountains for Job-Printing Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, said drawings forming a part of this specification, in which-- -I igure 1 is a top View of myimproved fountain. Fig. 2 is alfront elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the fountain with the duct-roller thrown back for cleaning; Fig. 5, a view of the fountain as applied to a job-press.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention relates to improvements in the construction of inkfountains for job-printing presses; and it consists (a) in the combination, with the well or trough of an ink-fountain, of a duet-roller supported by hinged arms, so that the duct-roller may be turned back when desired and access be had to the trough or well; (b) in the combination, with the fountain, of the means employed to give a forward and backward movement to the same; (0) in the combination, with the fountain, of the means employed to raise or lower the same as desired.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
My invention is intended particularly to ap ply to that class of ink-fountains used in connection with job-printing presses in which a revolving disk or table is employed to distribute the ink by the passage of the form-rollers over it, the ink being supplied to these rollers from the fountain, and in Fig. 5 of the drawings the fountain is shown as attached to a press of this eharaoten the revolving table being designated as A an the brackets supportin g the fountain as B, these brackets held in any convenient manner upon the cross-brace or saddle C supporting the table, and made of suitable length to bring the fountain at the rear of the table, or in a suitable'position for the form-inking rollers, as they reach the extent of their upward movement over theta-131e,, to be brought into contact with the duct-roller D of the fountain and be charged with ink by the same.
E shows the trough or receptacle for the ink, constructed with an inclined bottom, and D is the duet-roller, placed directly in front of the trough or receptacle E. The ends of this ductroller D are provided with the spindles F, passed through openings in the forward ends of the arms G, the rear ends of which are swiveled to the sides of the trough or receptacle E. In the upper sides of these arms G, back of the duct-roller, are inserted the set-screws H, free to engage with threaded openings in the lugs it upon the front of the trough E, so that by manipulating these screws H the duct-roller can be raised or lowered relatively to the bottom of the trough or receptacle, and thus govern the flow of ink to the duct-roller from the trough. Upon one of the spindles is secured a ratchet-wheel, I, with which apa-wl, J, hung in an arm, L, engages, and by connecting this arm L with the roller-carriage of the press, so that movement is impossible to it, the'pawl' engages with the ratchet-wheel, and by causing the same to revolve a certain extent with each movement of the roller-carriage the ductroller is caused to revolve a certain extent and present a fresh supply of ink to the form-rollers.
Iprovide, in connection with the fountain, means by which it may be advanced or withdrawn in a right line, and also by which its position vertically may be determined. The first means may be thus described: The trough has upon its rear the ears or lugs M, having threaded openings. Over these lugs or cars are passed the hollow plates N, provided with openings in line with the threaded openings when the plates are passed over the lugs or cars M. Through these openings the regulatin g-screws enter and engage with the threaded openings in the lugs or cars M, and by advancing or withdrawing these screws 0 the position of the fountain in a right line is Varied as may be necessary to adjust the front or forward end of the fountain to the form-rollers, the movement of which varies on presses of 2 eaaeeo different construction, and this adjustment is necessary that the form-rollers may be brought into contact with the duct-roller. ain is adjusted vertically by means of the 5 threaded standards P, supporting the plate N, and supported in brackets 13 by means of the threaded collars R, which turn on standards P. The brackets B have a smooth bore large enough to permit the standards P to move freely up and down in them as the collars R are turned. When the collars are turned so as to rise on the standards the fountain descends by its weight, and when the collars are screwed down the standards rise and raise the 15 fountain, the collars R resting on the top of brackets B.
As the composition rollers in use are subject to more or less shrinkage while in use, this adjustment compensates for the same and allows the fountain to be adjusted to the same.
The operation of the invention may be thus set forth: The trough or receptacle is filled with ink. Its flow to the duct-roller is regulated, as already set forth, by adjusting the duet-roller in position to the ink-receptacle, and the rotation of the duct-roller with each movement of the roller-carriage gives afresh supply of ink to the form-rollers, by them to be supplied to the revolving table.
The fount-.
The ability of the operator to govern the forward and backward movement of the fountain, as well as its vertical movement, will be found advantageous, while the hinging of the ductroller supports enables all parts of the fountain to be easily got at for cleaning.
Having now described my invention,I claim as new 1. The combination, with the trough or receptacle E, of the duct-roller D, hinged arms G, and regulating-screws H, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the trough or receptacle E, of the lugs M, hollow plates N,and regulating-screws O, constructed and operat ing substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the trough or receptacle E, of the threaded standards P, brackets B, platesN, and threaded collars, substan- 5o tially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED GAGE.
