GARMENT PROTECTING ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENT HANGERS Filed April 28, 1947 Jnnentor fiazzz'se MJwamz'ni Patented Jan. 15, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT PROTECTING ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENT HANGERS Louise M. J acomini, Hermosa Beach, Calif. Application April 2 8, 1947, Serial No. 744,462
This invention relates to a garment protecting attachment for garment hangers of the usual type, that is, a hanger comprising a curved supporting arm provided with'a centrally disposed suspension hook.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple device adapted to.be readilyattached to an ordinary garment hanger of the type above stated, which will keep the neck portion of a garment supported thereon from coming into contact with the suspension hook and being wrinkled and misshapen thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device as mentioned, particularly adapted-for protecting dresses made of light and soft materials.
A further object of the invention is to provide a protective attachment of the class stated, which will holcl the neck portion of the garment out of contact with the suspension hook, and yet permit the hanger supported garments to be crowded together in limited spaces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device as mentioned which shall be of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hanger equipped with an attachment embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 4 is a plan view of the attachment before applying the same to the hanger,
Figure 5 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention, consisting of a plurality of layers of material, with portions of the upper layers broken away, and
Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings, I0 indicates the curved arm of a garment hanger of the usual type. This is usually formed of wood and provided with a centrally disposed wire suspension hook I I.
The attachment comprises a blank I2 formed of a. sheet of flexible material such as stiff resilient paper; although the invention is not confined to the use of paper as will appear hereinafter.
The blank I2 comprises an elongated body portion having a straight upper edge I3 extending the greater portion of its length, and an arcuate,
3 Claims. (Cl. 223-92) the opposite ends in slightly downwardly extending lobes I5 having rounded edges IS. The outer edges I6 of the lobes merge with the straight top edge I3 by curves I1; and with the bottom edge I4 by reverse curves I8. The lobes I5 are each preferably provided adjacent the tip thereof with small perforation I9, for a purpose hereinafter disclosed.
The device is applied to a hanger with thebody I2 back of the hook II and with the straight edge I3 up. The end lobes I5 are then flexed forwardly over the arms III and secured to the front face of the hanger arm by any suitable means, such as by thumb tack 2i! extending through the perforations I9 and into the wooden hanger arm. It should be noted that the reverse curve I8 at the lower edge engages over the top edge of the hanger and permits the protector to assume the desired shape without distortion; and also permits said lower edge to slide over the hanger arm as the pressureon the front and back varies.
When in position on the hanger, the device provides a smooth curved surface area for the neck portion of the garment and prevents it from coming into contact with the supporting hook. Also, the body portion normally slopes downwardly and outwardly as shown in Figure 3, to hold the adjacent portion of the garment in shape and prevent undue wrinkling.
Being formed of flexible, resilient material a plurality of hangers with the garments thereon may be crowded together in a rack to occupy a limited space, without injury to the dresses, and without the loss of the function for which the device is designed. When so crowded together, the rearward and downwardly sloping body portion will be merely pressed more closely to the hanger arm and will still function to maintain the neck of the garment smooth and out of contact with the hanger hook. Also, by attaching the device to the hanger arm in the manner described, the portions thereof forwardly of the hanger arm will curve outwardly and downwardly and then inwardly to the points of attachment, such as the tacks 20, thereby forming convex or outwardly arched surfaces to engage the garment with no projecting ends or edges to injure the same. This is desirable for home use, but is particularly advantageous in stores where the dresses are displayed in large numbers and crowded together on racks, where they are subjected to rough handling by the shoppers.
In Figures 5 and 6, a modified form of the or curved lower edge I 4. The body terminates at invention is illustrated. As shown therein, the
both faces of the device formed of frictional material, the device may bereadi-ly reversed on the hanger when found desirable. v While the preferred forms of the device have an arcuate lower edge, and oppositely extending end lobes having curved edges merging into the upper and lower edges of the body portion, said lobes being provided with apertures to receive attaching means for securing the same to the hanger.
3. In a garment hanger, a curved arm and a supporting hook, in combination with a garment aprotectivew, device formed'lof a sheet iof; resilient material and comprising a body portion arranged back of said hook and the adjacent portion of said arm, end lobes in continuation of said body, flexedlovemtheahanger arm and attached to the wnfrontfdace'o'f said arm, the upper edge of said v15 body portion being straight when unflexed and been illustrated and described hereini it is' -to -be @theupperwdgesmf said lobes merging into said understood that modifications amay ebernrnade therein without departing fromthe invention as set forth in the-accompanying claims.
