Claims. (Cl. 280-36) This invention relates to a folding wheeled conv'eyance for young children and more particularly to a lightweight folding wheeled conveyance adapted to convey a child while in either a standing or sitting position.
It is often desirable when on extended shopping tours or walkswith small children to have some means available whereby the child, when hebecomes tired, can be relieved of further walking without being picked up and carried, and thus burdening the accompanying adult. It is the cbje'ct of this invention to provide an improved wheeled conveyance which is constructed of lightweight durable material and provided with means for collapsing into a, compact unit when not in use, to be easily carried or stored.
It is a further object of this invention toprovide an improved folding wheeled conveyance for young children which is adapted to convey the child while in either a standing or sitting position.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved folding wheeled conveyance which is simple in construction and inexpensive to produce.
Further and additional objects will'appear from the description, accompanying drawings, and appended claims. In accordance with the embodiment of this invention, an upwardly and forwardly extending supporting arm is provided with means available for folding it back when not in use. To the lower end of said arm is attached a platform base and to the underside of said base is attached a'pair of Wheels. A collapsible seat attachment is provided which may readily be attached to the supporting arm and platform base when desired. The entire conveyance, with or without the seat attached, may be folded into a small compact unit and convenientlycarried or stored in a suitcase or other suitable compartment.

Referring now to the drawings, one embodiment of the invention comprises a supporting arm 20, a platform base 22, attached. to the lower end of supporting arm 28, a pair of wheels 24 attached to the underside of said base 22, and a seat attachment 26 which may be readily mounted on supporting arm wand platform base 22 when desired. Supporting arm 20 is constructed of channeled sections 23, 3'8 and 32, which vary slightly in size; the lower e'n'd'33 of channeled section 28 being embraced by section 39 and attached'thereto at point 34; the lower end of section 38 being embraced by section 32- and attached thereto at point'3'6.
At the upper end of section 26' is attached a pair of handle grips 38 and 4-6 atpoint 42, handle 33 being provided to allow the accompanying adult to guide and" pull the conveyance. Handle grip 41), as shown in Fig. 2"; extends rearwardly and downwardly and is provided as a means for the conveyed child to hold onto while being conveyed, as seen in Fig. 1. A hole 44 is cut in the' rear portion of handle grip 48 and provides a means whereby a safety strap 46 (Fig. 1) may be attached, said strap embracing the child and thus preventing the child from falling backwards.
Section 28 is locked in the extended position by means of a locking spring device or latch 48, as shown in Fig. 6, said latch comprising a U- shaped member 58 .attached to the inside surface of section 28 at points 52 (Fig. 7). The latch is adapted to pass through a slot 54 cut in channel section 38, thereby holding section 28 in the extended position. Centering dimples and cooperating depressions 56 are provided on channeled sections 28 and 38, as shown in Fig. 7. Channeled section 28 may be collapsed after being unlocked, which is accomplished by pressing together the sides of U-shaped latch member 58 until released from the slot 54 in channeled section 38.
A modified form of a locking device is shown in Figs. 8 and 9, said form comprising a wing or thumb button 58 attached to channeled section 28 at point 88. A longitudinal slot 62 is cut in channeled section 38, as shown in Fig. 9. When said channeled section 28 is desired to be placed in the extended position the slot 82 allows the thumb button 58 to pass through said slot. The thumb button then is given a quarter turn to the position, as shown in Fig. 8, thus holding sections 28 and 38 in the extended position. Centering dimples and cooperating depressions 64 are also provided in sections 28 and 38, as shown in Fig. 9.
Channeled section 32 embraces the lower end of channeled section 38 and is attached at point 35, as shown in Fig. 2, section 32 being of a slightly tapered construction, the wider end being attached to the platform base 22 at point 66 by welding or any other similar means, as shown in Fig. 5. A hasp 68 is provided at the upper end portion of section 32 to allow the brace I8 of the seat attachment 28 to be attached to the said supporting arm 28. Slot I2 is cut in brace 18 to allow the hook portion I4 of the hask 88 to pass through brace member I8. The end portion I8 of the brace I8 extends beyond the slot I2 and embraces the channeled section 32, as shown in Fig. 12.
Platform base 22 is provided with hinge loops I8 and 88, as shown in Fig. 2, the same being spaced apart to receive between them the cooperating loops 8| projecting from the lower ends of supports 82 and 84 ofthe said seat attachment 2%, as shown in Figs. 11 and 13. A cotter pin 86 passes through cooperating hinge loops I8, 88 and 8|, thereby hingedly connecting the supports 82 and 84 to said platform base 22. Platform base 22 is made of a suitable lightweight material, preferably prefabricated, as shown. Said hinges are attached to the platform base 22 by welding or any other similar means, as shown in Fig. 5. Wheels 24, preferably rubber tired, are provided at the underside of platform base 22, the bearing supports 88 thereof being attached, by welding or any other similar means, to said base.
The seat attachment 26, as shown in Fig. 10, comprises vertical supports 82 and 84 and cross supports 94, and attached to vertical supports at points 96, as shown in Fig. 18. These supports 82 and 84 are not only hingedly connected to the platform base 22 as described above, but are also hingedly connected to a seat member 98 by hinges I88, as shown in Fig. 14. Brace member 78 is attached by welding or any other suitable means to member 98 and extends forwardly from said member, being attached at its forward portion to the supporting arm, as shown in Fig. 10. A slot I82 is out in said member 98 to allow the seat member to be engaged by hasp 68 when in collapsed position, thus holding the seat member in the collapsed position while being carried or stored, as shown in Fig. 14. A footrest I84 is attached to the lower end of channeled section 32 at point I86, as shown in Fig. 11, to allow the conveyed child to support its feet while being conveyed. Handle grips I88 extend outwardly from the seat member 98, as shown in Fig. 10, and thus allow the child while being conveyed in a seated position to maintain his stability. Handle grip 48 may be detached from channeled section 28 if desired when said seat attachment 26 is assembled.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that a lightweight, durable conveyance has been provided which may be collapsed into a small compact unit and carried or stored in some convenient compartment. Also it will be seen that a seat attachment may be mounted when desired. Thus the conveyance is adapted to convey the child either in a standing or in a seated position.
It will be obvious that certain modifications of the specific embodiment shown may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention. While several particular embodiments of this invention are shown above, it will be understood, of course, that the invention is not limited thereto since many modifications may be made, and it is contemplated, therefore, by the appended claims, to cover any such modification, as falls within the true spirit and scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. A folding conveyance for youn children comprising an upwardl and forwardly extending supporting arm, a platform base adapted to support a standing child attached to the lower end of said arm, and a pair of wheels for supporting said base attached to the underside thereof and disposed below said base, said arm comprising a plurality of channeled sections hingedly connected together, one section being of a slightly larger size, the upper end of said section embracing the lower end of the adjacent section, the upper section resting inside the lower section when in a folded position.
2. A foldin conveyance for young children comprising an upwardly and forwardly extending supporting arm, a platform base adapted to support a standing child attached to the lower end of said arm, and a pair of wheels for supporting said base attached to the underside thereof and disposed below said base, and with means for guiding said conveyance and enablin the standing child to keep his stability while being conveyed, said means comprising a plurality of grip handles attached to upper end of the supporting arm, one extending upwardly and forwardly and the other extending downwardly and rearwardly.
3. A folding conveyance for young children comprisin an upwardly and forwardly extending supporting arm, a platform base attached to the lower end of said arm, a pair of wheels attached to the underside of said base, a detachable seat member hingedly connected to said supporting arm and said platform base, said seat member comprising a pair of vertical supports hingedly connected at their lower ends to said platform base, a seat bottom hingedly connected to the upper end of said supports, and a brace hingedly connected to said seat bottom and extending forwardly to said supporting arm, said brace being releasably secured to said arm.
4. A folding conveyance for young children comprising an upwardly and forwardly extending supporting arm, a platform base attached to the lower end of said arm, a pair of wheels for sup porting said base attached to the underside thereof and disposed below said base, and a detachable seat member hingedly connected to said supporting arm and said platform base, said seat member being provided with handgrips extending outwardly from either side of the seat bottom for graspin by the conveyed child when seated in an erect position to maintain his stability.
5. A folding apparatus for conveying young children in either a standing or sitting position comprising an upwardly and forwardly extending supporting arm, a platform base attached to the lower end of said arm, a pair of wheels for supporting said base attached to the underside thereof and disposed below said base, a detachable seat member hingedly connected to said supporting arm and said platform base, and means for enabling the conveyed child while seated in an erect position to maintain his stability, said means comprising handgrips extending outwardly from either side of the seat bottom and a footrest attached to the lower end portion of said supporting arm.
