W. FITZWATER.
No. 258,198 Patented May16 1882.
i ATTORNEY?" jflWlTNESSES UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM. M. FITZWATER, OF LOUISA, KENT UGKY, ASSIGNOR TO L. T. MCULURE, OF SAME PLACE, AND T. B. MGCLURE, OF UATLETTSBURG, KENTUCKY.
CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,198, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed March 11, 1882.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FITZWA- TER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisa, in the county of Lawrence and State of same folded, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the slats.
This invention has relation to folding cribs or cradles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangementof the folding head and foot boards, the series of slats forming the bottom and sides, their flexible connections, and the fastening devices whereby the ends of the slats are connected tothe head and foot boards, all as hereinafter set forth.
The object of this invention is to provide a folding crib which can be conveniently stored or packed for traveling and readily put together in form for use whenever required. It is especially adapted to be used when traveling by rail or on steamboats.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the head and foot boards, which may be similarly constructed. Each of these boards consists of two or more sections extending horizontally and hinged together, as at a, so that the sections will fold upon each other in compact form. The lower section, b, of each board is preferably formed with a convex curved lower edge, and is designed to serve as a rocker. Each section is provided with socket catches or perforations, as at c, for the attachment of the ends of the longitudinal bars or slatsD,which form the bottom and side walls of the cradle. These bars or slatsare connected to each other near each end, and, it desirable, at intermediate points, by flexible strips, short jointed rods, or tapes, 0, which prevent the slats from becoming separated (No model.)
from each other, and at thesame time allow the entire flexible bottom and sides formed by the slats and their connecting-strips to be rolled up in a comparatively small and compact bundle. The head and foot pieces can also be folded and placed end to end, forming a core, around which the series of slats can be rolled. The ends of the slats are provided with tenons d or projections to engage the bearings 0 of the head and foot boards. If tenons and perforations are used, as illustrated in the drawings, the tenons should be secured by means of pins 9, passing through small perforations h, made in the ends of the tenons. The slats, being fastened to the head and foot boards, hold the sections whereof they are composed in firm relation to each other, while they in turn keep the slats in proper position, the whole forming a convenient cradle or crib, as the case may be.
One of the end slats may be provided with hooks k, whereby the cradle can be attached to the back of a seat-as, for instance, the seat of a railway-car.-
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A folding cradle or crib consisting of the sectional head and foot pieces A A, the series of slats D, forming the bottom and sides, their flexible connections 6, and the fastening devices whereby the ends of the slats are secured to the sections of the head and foot boards, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the sectional hinged head and foot boards having the rockersections 1), of the flexibly-connected series of slats forming the bottom and sides of the cradle, and the fastening devices connecting the ends of the slats to the sections of the head and foot boards, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim theabove I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. FITZWATER.
