INVENTR:
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED P. MANN, OF KEARNEY, NEBRASKA.
SHEAR-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,089, dated May 16, 1882.
Application tiled February 27, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED I. MANN, of Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and Stale of Nebraska, have invented anew and Improved Shear-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description..
The object of my invention is to facilitate holding and operating of shears, such as sheepshears.
The invention consists in a novel construe tion and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described `and pointed ont in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gurcs.
Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of shears provided with my improved pad. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved pad. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same and of a shank of the shears.
The casing or .pad A is formed of a plate of thin sheet metal, which can be bent readilyfor instance, such as brass, copper, or sheetiron-and this casing or pad A is provided on its outer surface with a covering, B, of leather, cloth, orpsimilar soft material, thc edges of this cover B heilig clamped and held by the overlapping edges of the metal plate forming the casing. A series ofindentationsm, are made in the overlapping part C of the plate, whereby part of the metal will he forced into the covering material. B, whereby this covering material will be held more securely by the overlapping part C ofthe metal plate forming the casing or pad. The casing or pad A is bent in such a manner that its cross section will be U-shaped, with the ends bent inward, downward, and upward, as shown in Fig. 3.
A strap, D, is attached to each casing or pad, A, and to one of these straps a buckle, E, or equivalent device, is attached for uniting the ends of these straps. y To secure the casings Aon the shanks F of a pair of shears, G, the longitudinal edges of the casings A are In using shears-provided with my improved' pads the united straps D pass over the back ot' the hand, these straps having been adjusted in length according to the size of the hand. If the shears are used to cnt wool from sheep, thc straps D prevent the hand from slipping forward upon the shear-blades while forcing the shears into the wool. At the same time the straps Dprevent the shears from being thrown from the hand in case the animal kicks the hand or the shears. leather or cloth protects the hand of the operator from being blistered or becomingfatigued, thus enabling the operator to operate longer with shears provided with the within described pads than with ordinary shears.
The covering B of Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. rlhe combination, with the casings A, provided with the covering B and adapted to be secured on the shanks ot' shears, of the straps D, for connecting these casings, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose of holding the shears in the operators hand, as set forth. v
2. rlhe combination, with the casing A, of the covering-layer B, of clot-h or leather, held on the casing A by the overlapping longitudinal edges C of the casing, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED PLIILANDER MANN. Witnesses:
JOHN WALL, G. F. GILBERT.
