Description

Jan. 1, 1952 c I MOTE KNIFE; BRACKET Filed March 16, 1950 ZNVENTOR ir'ouerdlziv BY J 6 ATTORNEY) Patented Jan. 1, 1952 MOTE KNIFE BRACKET Grover C. Nix, Thomaston, Ga., assignor to J. L. Sinback, McDonough, Ga.
Application March 16, 1950, Serial No. 150,001
1 Claim. 1
The invention relates to mote knife brackets and has as an object the support of mote knives by means allowing of yielding of the knives to pressure, to prevent breakage of the knives or their supports when subjected to excessive pressure.
It is an object of the invention to provide sup ports for mote knives formed with resilient means to hold the knives in operating position in such a manner that the knives may move away from the licker-in when encountering a mote of unusual size and whereby they will be automatically returned to position after such movement.
Further objects will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse section through a portion of a carding machine showing a lefthand mote knife bracket in position of use;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a right-hand bracket for use with the left-hand bracket of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the bracket of Fig. 2 as seen from the right of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 2.
As shown in Fig. 1, the carding machine includes a feed table I 0, a feed roll II, a licker-in I2, and a cylinder l3, all of usual construction.
' The bracket of the invention, as shown, comprises a member 14 rigidly secured to the frame l5 of the machine by means of a cap screw it. For adjustment, the cap screw is shown as applied in a slot H in member M.
The bracket, as shown, comprises the member I4 and a second member [8 pivoted upon member H! by a cap screw [9. As clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the portion of the member [4, which carries the slot IT, is considerably thicker than the member l8 and is formed with a recess 20 of greater depth than the thickness of member H3. The shoulder 2| provided by a surface of the recess 20 provides a stop for member l8 when it moves to operating position about the pivot 19.
The separation of the mote knives from the licker-in requires to be very accurately maintained. To assist in such maintenance, in the event of any play in the pivot, it is preferred. as shown, to provide an arcuate form of the stop 2| and the coacting surface of member l8.
To return the mote knives to operating position after yielding to a mote, a spring 22 is shown :rigidly secured to member M as by cap screws 23, and lapping with member [8 at 24. To add strength to member 15 and to reduce the clearance from the frame of the machine, the member I8 is formed with excess thickness above a shoulder 25, the corner of member 14 being rounded as at 26 to provide clearance during pivotal movement of member l8.
Recesses 21, 28 are shown, formed in member It, for reception of the mote knives 32 and for adjustment of the knives and to serve as abutments therefor, adjustment screws 29 are shown. To retain the knives in the recesses, set screws 31!, 31 are provided.
The operation will be clear from the above description.
The brackets of the invention may be utilized to replace old style brackets in existing carding machines and existing mote knives may be mounted therein.
Experimental use of the invention shows that stoppages of the machine to which they are applied are very greatly reduced.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof within the scope of the appended claim. 0
I claim:
A mote knife bracket comprising in combination: a bracket member for rigid attachment to the frame of a carding machine, formed with a recess providing a stop shoulder; a second bracket member pivotally mounted in said recess for an edge thereof to contact said shoulder, and formed with mote knife receiving means; spring means secured to said first named member and engaging said second member to urge said edge of the latter into contact with said shoulder.
