The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring assemblies for use with inner springs of mattresses, bed springs, cushions and the like, and more particularly to the provision of a coil spring retaining rod of novel tie wire construction for holding the springs firmly in a fixed assembled relation with respect to each other.
An important object of the invention is to provide a tie wire for inner springs of this character embodying means for securely fastening the tie wires to the springs without requiring the use of cli s or other types of fastening devices.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, efiicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of one of the tie wires;
Figure .2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a pair of springs held in overlapping relation with respect to each other by the tie wire;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view illustrating a pair of inner springs held in assembled relation by the tie wires;
Figure 4 is a similar View of a modified arrangement for holding the inner springs in a separated position with respect to each other; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Fi ure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a rigid wire tie rod and having each end bent to provide right angularly disposed portions 6 and l to position the end portion 1 parallel to and at one side of the rod 5. The outer end of end portion 1 is formed with a rearwardly extending hook 8.
Inwardly of the end portions 6 and I, the rod 5 is formed with a vertical U-shaped loop 9 and a horizontal U-shaped loop I!) inwardly of loop 9.
The rest of rod 5 is formed with groups of loops including a pair of horizontal U-shaped loops I l and a vertical U-shaped loop l2 between said pair of horizontal loops.
At the junction of the angular end pcrtion 6' with the rod 5 is a short vertical connecting bar l3 and ,a similar relatively short connecting bar It is positioned at the junction of one leg of the 1 horizontal loop 10 with the rod 5 to define arms 9a and 9b at each side of the vertical loops raised above the plane of the horizontal loops. Similar relatively short connecting rods are provided at the junction of one leg of the loops H with the rod 5.
The tie rods 5 are constructed of a suitable length for connecting a predetermined number of coil springs l5 in assembled relation with each other, the springs l5 being placed in rows, and one of the tie rods 5 being positioned along one edge of the row of springs in a substantially tangential position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawmes.
The hook 8 is engaged over the end convolutions it of the spring at the end of the row and with the right angled portions 6 and l and the horizontal loops [0 positioned horizontally under the convolutions l6 and with the intermediate loop 9 positioned vertically on the inner side of the convolutions H5. The short connecting bars l3 and I4 compensate for the diameter or thickness of the wire from which the spring is formed to enable the convolutions Hi to rest on the horizontal portions 6, l, and I0 in a tightly gripped position without necessitating bending of the rod 5.
The intermediate groups of loops I l and l 2 similarly support and engage an adjoining spring l5.
When it is desired to assemble adjacent springs in a position with their end convolutions overlapping, as shown in Figure 3, additional tie rods I! are placed at the overlapping edges of the springs and with the horizontal portions 6 and horizontal loops l0 underlying the convolution of one spring and the with vertical loop 9 positioned between the pair of overlapping convolutions. The springs are thus locked against shifting movement relative to each other.
When it is desired to assemble the springs in spaced apart parallel rows, as shown in Figure 4, a pair of tie rods l8 are positioned parallel to each other at diametrically opposite sides of the springs I9 and another pair of the rods 20 are similarly positioned at the remaining sides of the springs and at right angles to the tie rods l8 to thus lock the springs against shifting movement in any direction.
By forming the groups of loops II and I2 at predetermined spaced intervals in the-rod, the springs will be assembled at uniformly spaced distances from each other in a straight line and a spring assembly can be constructed of an exact length and width without the use of an assembly frame or other commonly employed assembling device.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to thoseiskilled inthis art. A more'detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that eventhough there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, *the same is susceptible to certain changes fullycomprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1,. A tie. member for connecting the convolutionsofa row oT'co'i'l springs comprising a wire rod having right angled horizontal end portions overlying and underlying said convo'lutions ofthe end springs of the row and terminating in hooks engaging over said convolutions, said rod having intermediate portions subtending and engagin one side of said convolutions of the springs of the row, and said rods being provided with horizontal loops bent therefrom intermediate said portions and which subtend and engage the opposite sides of said convolutions.

3. A tie member according to claim 1 wherein said portions are provided with vertical loops bent therefrom and lying inside and engaging said convolutions.
