The present invention deals with casting machines for pressure injecting heated castingmaserial, such as metal alloys or plastics in the cavities or impressions of a pair of relatively movable dies wherein the dies include a pair of trimming tools for trimmingcastings supported a' greater distance than thefinger 36 and spaced from thefin'ger 36 by a large recess 38. The table portion 31 isof a height or thickness corresponding to the spacing between a pin supported at the casting station and a pin supported at the trimming station. The table 3'! forms a support for thepin at the casting station, and the lower surface 31' of the table portion clears the upper surface of thepin at the trimming station when themes are movedinto closed position. Below 3 the table member 3? is a recess 39 which is adapted to receive the projecting table or shelf portion 45 of the member l6, note in this connection Fig. 4 of the drawing. The upper surface of the table portion 31 serves to support the pin in proper position at the casting station. The member I6 is recessed above the table or shelf portion 45, as seen at 4|, to'receive the table portion 31 when the dies move into closed position.
Suitably supported permanently above the die.
operating members l5 and I6 is a magazine 42 disposed at the lower end portion of a suitable hopper feed, not shown, and into which magazine pins are dropped for vertical stacking, in the manner partially illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The magazine comprises a U-shaped frame 43, note Fig. 3, in which is supported two guide plates 44 and 45 by suitable clamps as at 45 and 41. Arranged between the plates 44 and 45 are peripheral or edge spacer strips 48 and'49 for guiding and locating the pins 25, and particularly the heads 26 thereof for alined delivery with respect to the cavities or impressions l9 and 20 of the dies l1 and I8.
The lower discharge end of the magazine 42 is shown adjacent the upper surface of the die operating members l5 and I6 and the dies l1 and I8 supported therein. The inner edge of the guide strip 48 is curved, as seen at 48, in Fig. 2 of the drawing and the inner surface of the strip 49 is also curved, as seen at 49 in said figure. Between these surfaces and between the surfaces of the plates 44 and 45 are pin guide channels 53 which open through the lower surfaces of the magazine 42 and onto the upper surface 36' of the feed finger 36, note Fig. 4.
The plates 3434' and the plates 35-35 are secured to the lower portion of the plates 44 and 45, one of which attachments is indicated at the left of Fig. 1, and as further indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The plates 34-34 include at their upper ends shelf extension 5! for supporting the pins 25 in the channel 50. The plates 35-35 have cut out portions 52 spaced above the shelf 5! to form an angular extension 50 to the channel 50, note Fig. 4, which opens into another downwardly extending channel 50" between adjacent surfaces of each pair of plates 34-35 and 34-35, the channels 50" of both pairs of plates being in alinement, as will appear from a consideration of Fig. 5 of the drawing. The channels 50, 50 and 50" guide and position the pins 25 between the dies and further control final delivery of the cast headed pins from the machine, as shown for example in Fig. 10 of the drawing. In other words, the pairs of plates 34--35 and 34-35' remain stationary at all times, and are 54 of the plate 45 by suitable bolts as at 55. The
Considering now Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, wherein a diagrammatic illustration is shown of the members l5 and IS, in Fig. 6, the position of the parts here diagrammatically illustrated may be regarded as the step of beginning to open the dies after 'a casting has been formed on the pin 25' with the pin still Supported on the table or platform 31 in the channel 50", and the finger 36 still holding the lowermost pin 25" in the channel 50.
In Fig. '7, the members [5 and it are shown in their fully opened position where the table or shelf 31 has cleared the channel 55", allowing the pin 25 to drop in the channel 55" upon the shelf or platform 40 and also allowing the lowermost pin 25" to drop upon the shelf or platform 5| and in the channel 53', being held in the channel 50 by the spring catch 51. 7
Considering Fig. 8, in this figure, the dies a-r shown in a partially closed position, the finger 35 having delivered the pin 25" in position to drop in the channel 50" and onto the table or shelf 31 and with the pin 25 still retained upon the shelf or table in the channel 55''.
In Fig. 9, the members l5 and I6 including the dies thereon are in their fully closed position, in which position a cast head is formed on the pin 25" and the casting of the pin 25' is trimmed by the trimming tools 32.
Now turning to Fig. 10, here the members l5 and 16 are in a partially opened position, the member l6 having been retracted sufficiently to allow the trimmed pin 25 to drop through the lower end of the channel 50" into a suitable receptacle, not shown, with the table or platform 31 still supporting the pin 25" at the casting station.
The members l5 and. I6 then return to the position in Fig. 6, in which position the member It has moved inwardly sufficiently to again have the table or shelf 40 overlap the channel 50", leaving the pin 25" still supported at the casting station, similar to the showing of the pin 25' as in Fig. 6. This cycle of operation continues and in each cycle, a trimmed casting is delivered from the machine, a casting is formed on a pin at the casting station and a new pin is delivered at the delivery station. If the members l5 and [B are actuated toward and from each other, at the rate of three hundred and fifty or more operations per minute, then it will be apparent that three hundred and fifty or more castings will be formed by the machine:
In accordance with the method disclosed, four distinct functions and operations are performed in each cycle of machine operation, namely, delivery, casting, trimming and ejecting. In this method of procedure, three distinct table or supporting platforms are employed at the first three stations, namely for the pick-up and delivery of the pin or workpiece, at the casting station and at the trimming station. All these operations are performed in a simple mechanical and foolproof manner, particularly in the inclusion of the spring catch for retaining the pins against accidental delivery from the lower discharge end of the hopper or from the horizontal channel 50' to the vertical channel 50".
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the iscussed and op a i g members 15 nd 8- eregiven a d stin t moveme toward and. rom.
Considering Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will ap pear that the plates 44 and 45 have large recesses 44' and 4,5 in which the heads 26 of the pins 25 pass to provide free travel of the heads in these recesses. The narrow plate 48 engages a part only of the head, as will clearly appear in said figure.
It will also be understood that in mentioning the rate of die operation in forming castings, this rate may vary, depending upon the type and kind of casting material employed, particularly in comparing metallic castings with respect, to plastic castings as the rate of plastic castings is usually somewhat less than that of forming metallic castings.
